The Makera Z1 is an enclosed desktop CNC router for small projects in wood, plastics, PCBs, composites and non-ferrous metals. Its 200 × 200 × 100 mm work area and 150 W spindle are compact-machine specifications, not a substitute for a full-size shop CNC. The published figures and material guidance below come from Makera; independent hands-on performance testing is not established here.
What the Makera Z1 is—and how much space it gives you
The Z1 is a three-axis CNC machine intended for small parts and desktop-scale work. Makera lists a usable work area of 200 × 200 × 100 mm (7.9 × 7.9 × 3.9 in). The machine’s stated outer dimensions are 350 × 470 × 450 mm, and its listed weight is 17 kg. Allow additional room for access, stock handling, dust management and any accessories.
For rotary work, Makera offers a separate fourth-axis module. Its stated work envelope is 80 mm in diameter by 150 mm long; it does not turn the Z1 into a machine with a larger general-purpose milling area. The fourth axis is an optional accessory, not an included capability in the base configuration.
Specifications Makera publishes
| Specification | Makera-listed value |
|---|---|
| Three-axis work area | 200 × 200 × 100 mm (7.9 × 7.9 × 3.9 in) |
| Spindle power | 150 W |
| Spindle speed | 0–13,000 RPM, with closed-loop control |
| Spindle runout | 0.01 mm |

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements. In particular, resolution and spindle runout should not be read as a guarantee of finished-part accuracy: the result also depends on the tool, workholding, material, toolpath, machine setup and operating conditions. Makera describes the Z1 as having a quick tool changer.

What materials can it machine, and where are the limits?
Makera lists hardwoods, softwoods, MDF and plywood; plastics including acrylic, ABS, PC and HDPE; PCBs; and composites including carbon fiber and FR4. Its metal list includes aluminum, brass and copper—non-ferrous metals. These are manufacturer-stated material capabilities, not independently verified cutting results. The small work envelope and conservative cutting guidance matter as much as the material list.
Aluminum and other metals
Makera says aluminum cutting depth per pass is typically under 1 mm and gives about 50 mm as the maximum recommended aluminum thickness. That thickness figure is not a promise that the machine can cut through a 50 mm block in one operation; depth per pass and the overall stock dimension are different considerations. Makera does not recommend steel, stainless steel or titanium unless the operator has prior machining experience. Do not interpret the product’s metal capability as a general-purpose ability to mill ferrous stock.

Other material cautions
- Makera says glass cannot be processed, and agate or stone are unsuitable.
- The optional diode laser module is for engraving; Makera says it is not intended to cut acrylic.
- Carbon fiber and FR4 are listed composites, but machining them requires appropriate dust control and handling. The supplied material information does not establish a tested dust-exposure or extraction performance level.
For a specific job, check Makera’s current material guidance and use suitable tooling, workholding and dust precautions. The maker’s recommended parameters are not a replacement for understanding tool engagement and chip evacuation.
How the Z1 differs from the Z1 Pro
Makera positions the Z1 as the more cost-focused choice for wood and softer materials, and the Z1 Pro for users seeking greater efficiency in copper and aluminum or better precision retention at higher machining speeds. Makera says both machines can perform their advertised tasks when operated with its recommended machining parameters.

- ENCLOSED FOR DESKTOP CNC PROJECTS: The integrated enclosure helps contain chips and debris while reducing operating noise, making Cubiko better suited for home workshops and maker spaces. Opening the cover automatically pauses operation for added protection during use.
- EASIER AUTO Z-PROBING SETUP: Spend less time manually finding the Z-zero point. Enter your material thickness and Cubiko automatically sets the tool height, simplifying one of the most important setup steps before engraving, carving, and milling.
- SMART SURFACE MAPPING FOR PCB MILLING: Cubiko measures multiple points across the work surface and compensates for small height variations during machining, helping maintain more consistent engraving depth for PCB traces and other precision projects on uneven surfaces.
- VERSATILE MATERIALS & FLEXIBLE CONTROL: Create projects in wood, acrylic, PCB, plastics, and suitable soft metals with ±0.1 mm positioning accuracy. Control Cubiko through the Genmitsu App, WiFi, compatible PC software, or offline control for a flexible desktop CNC workflow.
The stated distinction is motor feedback. According to Makera, the Pro’s closed-loop motor can report certain overload anomalies and stop the process when an aggressive or incorrectly configured toolpath causes excessive load and slight positional deviation. The standard Z1’s stepper motor does not actively detect those anomalies. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independently tested comparisons; they do not mean the Pro prevents every machining error or that the Z1 is unsuitable for all metal work.
Software and workflow
Makera identifies Makera Studio as its CAM software and says it is free to Makera users. The company also lists Fusion 360, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, VCarve Pro, Aspire and Illustrator among compatible CAD/CAM tools. Makera presents the Makera App for remote control and monitoring, Makerables as a project-sharing platform, and AI Craft as a model-customization tool. Compatibility and feature availability can change, so confirm support for the specific software version and workflow you plan to use.

Makera advertises an enclosed frame, integrated dust collection and a built-in camera for remote monitoring and time-lapse. The product page also lists a cyclone dust collector, including a Lite version, as an accessory. The available product information does not establish independently measured dust capture, noise, or safety performance, so treat descriptions such as “quiet” or “safer” as manufacturer positioning rather than verified comparative results.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWho should consider the Z1?
- A plausible fit: someone making small parts, signs, fixtures, PCB work or other desktop-scale projects who values an enclosure and accepts a 200 × 200 × 100 mm work area.
- Consider the Pro: if your work regularly involves copper or aluminum and you value the motor-feedback and higher-speed precision-retention benefits Makera attributes to the Pro.
- Look beyond this machine: if you need a larger work envelope, routine ferrous-metal machining, or independently verified accuracy, noise or extraction performance. The available manufacturer specifications do not establish those outcomes.
Makera’s CNC comparison page lists the Z1 at 150 W with a 20 × 20 × 10 cm work area, while listing Carvera and Carvera Air with 200 W spindles and larger work areas. Compare exact configurations and current regional listings rather than assuming that spindle power alone predicts suitability.
