You can make a rental feel like yours without starting with paint or permanent upgrades. Begin with portable layers—rugs, lamps, curtains, art, textiles and flexible furniture—then consider any surface or hardware changes only after checking your lease and getting written approval where needed.
Start with the rental rules and the condition of the apartment
Before painting, changing a fixture or hardware, installing a wall covering, or making holes, read your lease. If it is unclear, ask the landlord and keep written approval. New York real-estate attorney Mark A. Hakim puts the principle plainly: “A tenant should never alter the apartment in any material manner without first reviewing the lease to see what rights the tenant has.” Rules and landlord practices vary, so this is practical decorating guidance, not legal advice. Apartment Therapy’s guide to projects to ask a landlord about also warns that removable wallpaper and vinyl can peel paint or damage drywall during removal.
- Photograph existing damage and finishes before you decorate; keep the images with your lease records.
- Save written approvals and any instructions about installation or restoring the apartment.
- Favor changes you can take with you. Treat “removable” as a product claim, not a guarantee that a surface will come away undamaged.
35 rental-friendly apartment decorating tips
Make the room feel finished
- Choose a small color palette. Pick two or three colors and repeat them in textiles, art and accessories instead of committing to a wall treatment first.
- Use a large area rug. It adds color and texture and can visually cover dated flooring without replacing it.
- Layer smaller rugs. Use a smaller patterned rug over a plain one to bring in color while keeping the larger floor area protected visually.
- Repeat a texture. Woven baskets, a knitted throw and a textured cushion can make a room feel considered without altering it.
- Swap pillow covers seasonally. Covers take little storage space and let you refresh a sofa without replacing it.
- Add a throw to the sofa or bed. A contrasting textile introduces color and softens furniture that came with the apartment.
- Use curtains to frame the windows. Check the lease and ask before installing a rod or making holes; choose a permitted setup rather than assuming hardware is allowed.
- Bring in a freestanding screen. A folding screen can define a sleeping or work area without building a partition.
- Lean art on a shelf or mantel. Layer framed pieces on stable furniture when wall hanging is restricted.
- Hang lightweight art with suitable removable strips. Follow the product’s surface and weight instructions; adhesive products are not appropriate for every finish.
Improve light and atmosphere
- Add a floor lamp. It can brighten a dark corner without changing the apartment’s fixed lighting.
- Place a table lamp near the sofa. A pool of warm light makes a seating area feel inviting.
- Use a desk lamp for focused tasks. Mood lighting alone may not provide enough illumination for reading or work.
- Layer more than one lamp. Combining ambient and task lighting gives you more control than relying on a single ceiling fixture.
- Use a mirror to reflect light. Position it to catch daylight or lamplight, and secure it appropriately if it is heavy.
- Choose lamps that work in more than one room. A portable design can move with you when the layout changes.
Make furniture work harder
- Measure before buying. Check doorways, clearances and room dimensions so furniture can be moved in and fit the layout.
- Pick flexible seating. Modular seating can be rearranged for guests or a future home.
- Keep folding chairs on hand. They add occasional seating and can be stored when not needed.
- Choose a table with storage. A storage ottoman or table can provide a surface and reduce clutter.
- Use a kitchen cart for extra workspace. A movable cart can add storage and counter space where built-in cabinets are limited.
- Use a bookcase as a room divider. It separates zones while adding storage; secure tall furniture appropriately and follow building rules.
- Choose pieces that can serve another room. A small side table can become a nightstand, entry table or plant stand after a move.
- Keep pathways clear. Arrange furniture so doors, windows and everyday routes remain usable.
Personalize walls and storage carefully
- Display a collection together. Grouping a few meaningful objects on a shelf gives them more presence than scattering them around the room.
- Use adhesive hooks for lightweight items. They can help organize keys, small tools or light kitchen utensils; check the surface, load rating and removal instructions first.
- Try peel-and-stick wallpaper only with permission. It can add pattern to a wall, but it may damage paint or drywall when removed.
- Consider contact paper for a temporary surface refresh. Use it only if approved and compatible with the surface; do not assume it will peel away cleanly.
- Style open shelves with practical and personal objects. Mix books, useful dishes and a few keepsakes rather than filling every inch.
- Use baskets to hide small-item clutter. Portable containers make open storage feel calmer and are easy to move.
- Keep counters usable. A tray can corral frequently used items without turning the whole counter into storage.
Give the kitchen and bathroom a lift
- Add a shower curtain with color or pattern. It is an easy-to-change textile layer; use the existing setup unless the lease permits other changes.
- Put a bath mat underfoot. It adds softness and color without changing the bathroom itself.
- Use a movable cart or freestanding shelf for bathroom storage. It adds capacity without drilling into tile or cabinetry.
- Ask before changing cabinet doors or hardware. If a change is approved, label and safely store original parts so they can be reinstalled as required.
When temporary wall treatments or hardware swaps make sense
Temporary wallpaper, contact paper, cabinet changes and hardware swaps can have a stronger visual effect than portable decor, but they also bring more installation, removal and permission risk. Lease terms, building rules and the condition of the existing finish all matter. The decorating guides from Apartment Therapy and its rental decorating ideas discuss temporary treatments and removable changes as possibilities, not universal permissions or damage-free solutions.
If you are unsure, choose a rug, lamp, curtain arrangement that requires no unapproved installation, or movable furniture instead. Avoid casual electrical work: use portable lamps rather than changing a fixture when permission or expertise is uncertain.

Pick changes by portability and risk
| Option | Portability | Installation and removal | Permission or surface risk | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rugs, lamps, textiles and movable furniture | High; typically packable and reusable | Low effort; no fixed installation | Generally avoids changing fixed surfaces | Color, comfort, lighting and flexible layouts |
| Leaned art and freestanding storage | High | Low effort; position and move as needed | Low if stable and not attached | Display and extra storage without holes |
| Adhesive hooks or picture strips | Portable, but the adhesive is not reusable | Easy to apply; removal depends on product and surface | Finish compatibility, load and instructions matter | Lightweight art and small-item organization |
| Peel-and-stick wallpaper or contact paper | Potentially removable, but not risk-free | More installation and careful removal | May damage paint or drywall; check lease and ask first | Pattern or surface refresh when expressly permitted |
| Painting, fixture swaps, cabinet-door or hardware changes | Low to moderate; original parts may need storage | More effort to install and restore | Permission-dependent; restoration may be required | Only when lease terms or written approval allow it |
Costs depend on what you already own and what you choose; the available guidance does not establish comparable prices or tested durability. A useful rule is to spend first on pieces you can reuse, then weigh the visual benefit of any less-portable change against its approval and restoration requirements. Apartment Therapy’s rental decorating principles also emphasize versatile furniture and decor that can move with you.
