Choose the method by the result you need: stopping shoots, encouraging the wood to decay, and physically removing a stump are different jobs. For the quickest physical removal, hire a qualified stump-grinding operator. For a stump that can remain in place, a labeled cut-stump herbicide may help control regrowth, while fertilizer-based approaches encourage gradual decay—not instant removal.
First decide what “kill a stump” means
A stump may be dead yet still send up shoots from living tissue or roots. Treating that regrowth does not make the wood disappear. Decay methods leave the stump in place while it breaks down, and grinding or digging physically removes it. The right choice depends on whether you need a clear site, want to prevent shoots, or can let the stump remain. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Penn State Extension describe these distinct control and removal aims.
Eight ways to deal with a tree stump
1. Hire a qualified operator to grind it
Stump grinding is the quickest and safest removal option in Iowa State Extension’s guidance. A professional grinder typically removes the stump and large lateral roots to a depth of 8 to 12 inches, leaving wood shavings behind. The site may need additional cleanup or fill after grinding. Cost varies in part with stump size; the source does not give a standard price.
2. Rent or use a stump grinder
Grinding is also a physical-removal method when equipment is operated on site, but the cited extension guidance addresses professional service, not the safety or performance of a particular rental machine. Stump size, access, buried obstacles, and operator experience matter. For a large or difficult stump, use a qualified operator rather than assuming a rental is a simple DIY job.

- USE ON SEASONED STUMPS-Most efficient on stumps that have been cut for 18 months or longer.
- DIY-Breakdown stumps for easier removal.
- NO HARM TO SURROUNDING PLANTS-Will not harm surrounding vegetation where applied.
3. Dig out the stump and roots
Manual digging may suit a smaller stump when you can work around it and remove enough roots for the site’s needs. The effort depends on stump and root size; the cited sources do not provide a dependable labor estimate or species-specific procedure. Plan for substantial digging rather than assuming the stump will come free easily.
4. Apply a labeled cut-stump herbicide to reduce regrowth
Some stumps or connected roots can send up shoots. A product labeled for the intended cut-stump use may help control that regrowth. Extension guidance identifies glyphosate and triclopyr among common active ingredients, but an ingredient name alone does not establish that a product is suitable for your site.

The target is living tissue at the cambium ring just beneath the bark. Iowa State advises treating a freshly cut stump after removing sawdust or soil; Penn State emphasizes treating living tissue and following label directions for mixing. Use the exact local product label for timing, concentration, protective equipment, and site restrictions. This is a regrowth-control method, not stump removal.
5. Cut and treat new sprouts if they appear
Check the stump and nearby root area for new shoots after treatment. If shoots appear, cut and treat them only as the product label allows. In an aspen case described by an extension response, follow-up could extend for as long as two years; that is a case-specific possibility, not a universal timeline. The response is available from Nebraska Extension.

6. Encourage gradual decay with fertilizer
If the stump can remain, Iowa State suggests cutting it low, drilling holes to expose more wood, adding slow-release fertilizer, and covering it with soil or sod. This is a gradual decay approach, not a way to make the stump vanish quickly or guarantee that roots will stop producing shoots.
7. Use a commercial nitrate stump-treatment product
Some products marketed for stump removal use nitrate compounds; potassium nitrate is a common ingredient in chemical stump-treatment products, according to Illinois Extension. Iowa State notes that these products are often a form of fertilizer and that regular fertilizer may work as well. Either way, this is a slow-decay path rather than instant removal or proven control of all roots. Buy and use only a product whose label covers the intended task and site.

- When applying the product to freshly cut stumps, apply within 45 minutes.
- See product label for a full list of woody plants and vines targeted by this product.
8. Leave a stable stump in place
If it is in an isolated area and presents little risk, leaving the stump can provide habitat for insects, birds, and other wildlife. Iowa State advises checking its stability over time. This option makes sense only when the stump’s location and condition are acceptable for the site.

| Method | Main goal | Time and effort | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional grinding | Physical removal | Quickest option in Iowa State Extension’s guidance; operator and machinery required | Leaves shavings; typical depth is 8 to 12 inches, not complete removal of every root |
| Rental grinding | Physical removal | Requires equipment and operator skill; no rental performance comparison is established by the cited source | Do not assume a rental is suitable or safe for every stump |
| Manual digging | Physical removal | Effort depends on stump and root size | No comparative labor estimate is established |
| Labeled cut-stump herbicide | Reduce regrowth | Requires correct treatment of living cambium and label-directed application | Does not remove the stump; product directions and allowed uses vary |
| Cut and treat new shoots | Follow-up regrowth control | Repeated attention may be needed | Duration varies; the aspen example is not a general timeline |
| Fertilizer or nitrate product | Encourage decay | Gradual process; stump remains while it decays | Not fast removal and not established as complete root control |
| Leave in place | Retain habitat and avoid removal work | No removal work unless conditions change | Suitable only where location and stability are acceptable |
The cited sources do not provide standardized costs or a controlled head-to-head test of these methods, so there is no evidence-based universal ranking by price or effectiveness.

What to avoid
- Epsom salt: The Nebraska Extension response about aspen does not establish drilled holes filled with magnesium sulfate as a reliable treatment; it describes continued sprouting and the possibility of follow-up control.
- Burning: Iowa State advises against burning a stump because a fire can be difficult to control or extinguish and may burn for days. Burning may also violate city or county rules. Check current local restrictions and do not add accelerants such as diesel fuel.
- Herbicide poured into old holes: Iowa State says this is not a useful way to promote decay after removal and warns the herbicide may leach into soil and harm nearby plants. That differs from a labeled cut-stump application intended to control regrowth.
- Picloram products in a garden setting: Iowa State cautions against them because the ingredient can persist and cause collateral damage. Do not substitute an active ingredient based on a generic “stump killer” claim; check that the specific product is labeled for your site and intended use.
- Pulling with a chain: A chain can slip or break, causing serious injury or property damage. Do not treat improvised vehicle pulling as a safe removal method.
How to choose
- If the stump must be gone soon, get a quote from a qualified local stump-grinding operator.
- If the wood can stay but shoots are the problem, use only a product labeled for cut-stump treatment, and plan to monitor for regrowth.
- If you can wait and want the stump to break down in place, consider fertilizer-based decay methods with realistic expectations about time.
- If the stump is isolated, stable, and not in the way, leaving it may preserve wildlife habitat without removal work.
