A chamfer bit cuts a flat, angled bevel along an edge. Choose its angle and size to match the bevel you want, then verify the bit’s shank, guide arrangement and dimensions against your router and its instructions. A 45-degree bit is common, but it is not right for every profile.
What a chamfer bit does
A chamfer router bit removes material from a corner to leave a flat, sloping face. It can soften a sharp edge or form a deliberate decorative profile. Unlike a roundover bit, which leaves a curved edge, a chamfer bit produces a straight bevel.
For an overview of chamfer-bit applications, see the CMT catalog. Product details vary, so consult the specific cutter’s documentation when selecting a bit.
How to choose the angle and cutter size
Begin with the finished profile: sketch it or measure the bevel the project requires. Then choose an angle and cutter dimensions suited to that cut. Forty-five degrees is a common chamfer, not a universal default; the right choice depends on the intended bevel.
#1 Best Overall
- KOWOOD Plus 45° Chamfer router bit set is an upgrade router kit designed for angled edges.
- KOWOOD Plus designed for Woodworking Lovers or Carpenter, provide a next-level experience.
- KOWOOD Plus series router bits are all upgraded KOWOOD C3 carbide. This series of bits are in a heat-treated process, providing maximum durability of use.
- Wide range of applications, suitable for dense wood, laminate, particleboard, and plywood.
- Universal 1/4" tool holder is suitable for all major desktop router workbenches, such as KOWOOD, Bosch, DeWalt, Tooldo, Makita, Milwaukee, MNA, Porter & Cable, Skil, Ryobi, Black & Decker. (Fit for handheld router, table router or CNC).
Check the bit’s cutting diameter and usable cutting length as well as its overall length. Those dimensions affect whether the cutter can make the required bevel on the material and fit the planned operation. Milwaukee Tool’s chamfer-bit product information is an example of manufacturer-specific reference material; check current product documentation for the exact model you are considering.
Choose how the cut will be guided
Some chamfer bits use a pilot or bearing that tracks along the workpiece edge. Other setups may rely on a fence or template. Check the individual bit and operation to determine what provides guidance; do not assume every chamfer bit is bearing-guided.

Check fit and router limits
- Shank and collet: Match the bit shank to a collet specified for your router. Do not assume a bit fits because it can be inserted.
- Dimensions: Confirm cutting diameter, cutting length and overall length against the intended cut and the router’s capabilities.
- Guidance: Confirm whether the cutter has a bearing or pilot, or whether the operation needs a fence or template.
- Machine and cutter instructions: Follow both manufacturers’ operating limits and setup directions. If the bit or setup is unsuitable, choose another cutter or method rather than forcing the fit.
Lowe’s router-bit buying guide provides general selection guidance. Product specifications and availability can change, so verify the current documentation for your router and the particular bit.

Use the bit safely
Follow the router and cutter makers’ instructions for the machine, bit and operation. Disconnect power before changing a bit or adjusting the tool, secure the workpiece, and use appropriate guarding, dust extraction and protective equipment for the material and task. Eye protection is important; face, respiratory and hearing protection may also be appropriate. Some specialty bits may require a router table, so check the bit and router instructions before setup.
These general precautions do not replace the instructions for your specific machine. Lowe’s safety guidance and AusTech’s tooling advice offer further general context, but the router and cutter documentation should govern your setup.

A practical selection sequence
- Sketch or measure the bevel the finished workpiece needs.
- Select a chamfer angle and cutter dimensions that match the intended profile.
- Decide how the cut will be guided: by a bearing or pilot on the bit, or by a suitable fence or template.
- Check the shank against the router’s collet, then verify cutter dimensions and machine limits using the product and router instructions.
- Set up and operate the tool according to the manufacturers’ safety and operating directions.
If no available bit and setup match the required profile and the router’s limits, use a different cutter or setup.
