There is no one dishwasher detergent format proven best for every hard-water supply and dishwasher. Whirlpool recommends quality tablets or packs for reducing film, while its buying guide points to powder as a useful option for hard-water limescale and spots. Choose based on your machine, measured water hardness, wash temperature and dose—and check rinse aid and softener settings before simply adding more detergent.
Which detergent works best in hard water?
Start with the dishwasher manual and detergent label. Whirlpool’s product-help guidance favors quality premeasured tablets or packs to reduce film across different hardness and soil levels (Whirlpool’s detergent guidance). Its buying guide also describes powder as a useful hard-water choice for limescale, streaks, spots and cloudiness, with a caveat: powder may dissolve poorly in cold water (Whirlpool’s buying guide).
These are manufacturer recommendations, not a controlled comparison establishing a universal winner or a best brand. The practical trade-off is convenience versus dose flexibility:
| Format | Why consider it | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Tablets or packs | Premeasured and convenient; Whirlpool’s product-help guidance recommends quality versions for reducing film. | Check whether the product contains rinse aid; some do not. Follow the package and machine instructions. |
| Powder | Allows dose adjustment; Whirlpool’s buying guide identifies it as an option for hard-water limescale and spots. | It may dissolve poorly in cold water. Follow the label and use a cycle suited to your dishwasher. |
Use only detergent made for automatic dishwashers. Keep it tightly closed in a cool, dry place; Whirlpool notes that fresh detergent cleans better. Put premeasured detergent in the main compartment and use other formats as their labels direct.

Why are dishes cloudy or covered in white residue?
A powdery white deposit may be mineral film left behind as hard water evaporates—not undissolved detergent. The American Cleaning Institute explains that hardness changes how much detergent is needed, but both too little and too much can impair cleaning (American Cleaning Institute dishwashing guidance).
Before changing detergent, identify whether the problem is removable residue, a water-softener setting or glass damage. Ask your local water utility about the hardness of your supply, then follow the detergent label and your dishwasher manual for dosing and settings. Hard water generally calls for more detergent than soft water, but increasing the dose blindly can make results worse.

- Finish Salt is specifically made for dishwashers to soften water and protect them from the negative effects of hard water which can reduce the efficiency of your dishwasher

- Thanks to its high purity of 99%, Finish Salt gives your dishwasher better protection from limescale residues

- Finish is trusted by leading dishwasher brands like Bosch, Hisense, Siemens, Neff, and Smeg, ensuring reliable results with every wash
The American Cleaning Institute gives 140°F as the optimum wash temperature and 120°F as the minimum in its general guidance. These are not a substitute for your appliance manual, which should govern the cycle and temperature settings for your model.
How can you reduce spots and mineral deposits?
Use rinse aid as directed
Rinse aid helps water sheet off dishes so minerals are less likely to remain as spots or deposits. Whirlpool says its dishwashers are designed for liquid rinse aid to improve drying and control hard-water deposits; the American Cleaning Institute describes how improved sheeting helps minerals wash away (Whirlpool on preventing cloudy glassware; American Cleaning Institute dishwashing guidance). Fill the dedicated reservoir according to the manual. A tablet or pack may not include rinse aid, so check its label rather than assuming it does.

Check the dishwasher’s softener settings
If your model has a built-in water softener, set it for the hardness of your local supply and add the specified salt if required. Incorrect settings or excess detergent can contribute to residue. Samsung’s instructions vary by model; for compatible machines, use dishwasher salt in the designated reservoir, not other salts or solvents (Samsung’s dishwasher salt and rinse-aid instructions).
Consider a softener when water is exceptionally hard
Thresholds depend on the appliance guidance. Whirlpool recommends a water softener at 15 grains per U.S. gallon or more. Fisher & Paykel’s DD60/DD24 guide gives a different, model-specific threshold: above 250 ppm (14.6 grains per U.S. gallon) when the appliance has no built-in softener (Whirlpool’s guidance; Fisher & Paykel DD60 user guide). These figures apply to those manufacturers’ stated recommendations, not as a single rule for all dishwashers.

What if residue or cloudiness remains?
Clean existing buildup
If mineral deposits have accumulated inside the dishwasher, use a dishwasher cleaner or descaler according to its label and the appliance manual. Whirlpool suggests cleaning the interior approximately monthly in its guidance on glass cloudiness. Cleaning products address existing buildup; they do not replace detergent or soften the incoming water.
Tell removable film from permanent glass damage
Whirlpool suggests gently rubbing a small area of a cloudy glass with a little vinegar. If the layer comes off, it may be removable film; if it does not, the glass may have etching or silica film. Etching is permanent. Whirlpool also warns that excessive detergent in exceptionally soft water can damage glassware, so do not keep raising the dose without checking hardness and settings (Whirlpool’s glass-cloudiness guidance). Follow care directions for both the glassware and dishwasher.
