If a BRK alarm sounds three beeps followed by a pause unexpectedly, treat it as a possible smoke emergency: get everyone outside and call 9-1-1 from a safe location. Do not go back inside until emergency responders say it is safe. A test can also produce this pattern, and exact signals vary by model, so check the alarm’s label and manual only after immediate danger has been addressed.
What three beeps and a pause mean
First Alert’s general safety guidance identifies “3 Beeps and a Pause” as a smoke warning and advises evacuation and a call to 9-1-1 from outside: First Alert: Why Is My Smoke Detector Beeping? An unexpected alarm should not be dismissed just because smoke is not immediately visible.
Context matters. Some BRK alarms produce three beeps during their prescribed test, and a linked alarm elsewhere in an interconnected system may be the unit that initiated a warning. A periodic chirp can indicate a different condition from a repeating three-beep alarm. Use the exact model’s instructions to interpret the signal.
What to do when the alarm sounds
- If it is unexpected, evacuate. Get everyone outside using your household escape plan, then call emergency services from outside. Do not delay leaving to search for the source.
- Do not disable it to silence an unexplained warning. The SA10YR/4010YR manual warns that removing its sealed power cells disables smoke detection. Use a silence procedure only when the danger has been assessed and the model’s instructions allow it.
- Once safe, identify the alarm. Find the model number on the unit and consult its matching manual. Check whether it detects smoke only or smoke and carbon monoxide, what indicator light is flashing, whether a test was in progress, and whether other alarms are interconnected.
- Test according to the manual. The SC9120B and SM6/SC6 instructions direct users to test with the Test/Silence button and recommend weekly checks. Do not use an open flame. If the alarm fails its test, follow the model’s troubleshooting steps; the SC9120B manual says to check AC power, battery installation and cleanliness, then replace the unit if it still does not work properly.
- Replace only when the unit’s instructions indicate it. A failed prescribed test or reaching the specified service life can mean replacement is needed. Match any replacement to the installed alarm’s model requirements, power, wiring and interconnection.
How signals differ by BRK model and situation
| Model or situation | Signal described in the instructions | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| SC9120B combination smoke and CO alarm | Three beeps and a pause, with the red smoke indicator flashing | Smoke alarm pattern. The manual also includes this pattern in its test sequence. SC9120B user manual via First Alert support |
| SC9120B combination smoke and CO alarm | Four beeps and a pause, with the red CO indicator flashing | CO alarm pattern; the manual also includes it in the test sequence. SC9120B user manual via First Alert support |
| SA10YR/4010YR smoke alarm | Three beeps, pause, repeated during a test and alarm | Three beeps may be expected during a test; the manual’s pattern alone does not identify the cause of an unexpected alarm. These models have sealed, non-replaceable power cells and a stated 10-year operating life. SA10YR/4010YR user manual via First Alert support |
| 7010BSL smoke and strobe alarm in an interconnected system | Smoke pattern can sound when another interconnected alarm initiates it; a CO event produces the four-beep pattern | The sound may originate from a different linked unit. Check indicators and identify the initiating alarm only after people are safe. 7010BSL user manual via First Alert support |
| Weak backup battery on the cited SC9120B and SA10YR/4010YR models | A chirp about once per minute | This is described as a low-battery or low-power indication, rather than the repeating smoke-alarm pattern. Consult the specific manual. SC9120B and SA10YR/4010YR manuals via First Alert support |
Signal details above are specific to the cited manuals; they should not be assumed to apply to every BRK alarm. The service-life figure, in particular, applies to the SA10YR/4010YR models described in their manual, not the whole BRK range.

When three beeps happen during a test
A test can deliberately sound three beeps and a pause. The BRK SA10YR/4010YR manual describes its test as “3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps, pause,” and the SC9120B manual also includes the three-beep pattern in its weekly test sequence. If the pattern occurs only while using the test control as directed, follow that model’s test instructions. A test pattern does not establish the cause of a separate, unexpected alarm.
First Alert’s SM6/SC6 support instructions recommend testing with the Test/Silence button and checking alarms weekly: First Alert: Weekly Testing.

When to replace the alarm
Replace an alarm if it fails the test procedure or reaches the service life specified for its model. The SA10YR/4010YR manual gives those models a 10-year operating life and says their sealed power cells cannot be replaced. Other BRK alarms may have different power arrangements and service-life instructions, so check the label and manual rather than applying that figure across the range.
