10 Companion Plants for Watermelon—and 3 Growing Conditions to Avoid

A practical guide to candidate watermelon companions, the limits of companion-planting claims, and the three conditions that can hinder a crop.

There is no well-established, watermelon-specific ranking of the “best” companion plants—or a proven blacklist of three plants to keep away. The useful approach is to choose neighbors for a clear purpose, then make sure they do not crowd, shade, or outcompete watermelon. Diverse plantings can sometimes make it harder for pests to find a host, but they do not guarantee pest control or a larger harvest.

How to choose companions for watermelon

Watermelon is a tender, warm-season crop with sprawling vines and large leaves. Illinois Extension advises sowing when soil is warmer than 65°F and emphasizes that vines need considerable room. In a mixed bed, judge a proposed companion by its mature height and footprint—not just the size of its seedling—and by its demands for light, water, and nutrients.

Companion planting is not a guaranteed treatment. University of Delaware Cooperative Extension explains that plant diversity can disrupt the cues some pests use to find host plants, and that flowers may support beneficial insects. But more beneficial insects do not always mean fewer pests on the target crop, and neighboring plants can reduce yield when they compete for resources. Jon Traunfeld, retired University of Maryland Extension food-gardening specialist, advises: “Select companion plants that are not overly competitive with the main crop.”

The ten candidates below are practical options to evaluate, not a scientific top-ten ranking. Extension guidance supports some of their general functions or related-crop uses; it does not establish that every pairing increases watermelon yield.

10 companion plants to consider

1. Nasturtiums

Maryland Extension reports that nasturtiums help reduce damage from squash bugs and cucumber beetles. That statement concerns those pests and related garden crops; it is not proof of a watermelon-specific trial or a guarantee of protection. Keep the plant from sprawling into the watermelon’s space.

2. Marigolds

Maryland Extension also names marigolds in connection with reduced damage from squash bugs and cucumber beetles. Treat them as a possible part of a diverse planting, not as a stand-alone pesticide or assurance that watermelon pests will be controlled. Plant them where their mature size will not shade the vines.

3. Other flowering plants that support beneficial insects

Flowers can help provide resources for beneficial insects. Delaware Extension cautions, however, that supporting natural enemies does not necessarily reduce pests on a particular crop. Choose flowering plants that fit the bed without competing heavily for water, nutrients, or sunlight; the cited guidance does not establish a particular flower as a proven watermelon companion.

4. Beans, as part of a planned intercropping system

Maryland Extension describes beans in the Three Sisters system as contributing nitrogen, alongside corn that supports the beans and squash whose foliage shades soil and suppresses weeds. This illustrates how crops can be arranged for complementary functions, but it is not a prescription for planting beans with watermelon. A bean planting is only sensible if it will not tangle with, shade, or compete against the melon vines.

5. Corn, where there is room for a deliberate layout

In the Three Sisters example, corn provides support for climbing beans. That functional role does not establish a watermelon benefit. Corn’s height and footprint can also affect light and space, so place it only where it will not shade the watermelon or obstruct access to the vines.

6. Squash, as an intercropping example rather than a default neighbor

Squash foliage can cover soil and suppress weeds in the Three Sisters system. Squash and watermelon both need room to spread, so putting them together in a small bed may create competition and make it harder to tend either crop. The example demonstrates purposeful layout, not a proven yield advantage for watermelon.

  • CRIMSON WATERMELON SETS THE HIGH BAR FOR WHAT A WATERMELON SHOULD BE. The strong variety features a thinner rind, a sweeter honey flavor, smaller, almost unnoticeable seeds. Distinctive taste qualities, excellent commercial characteristics. A decent harvest both in weight and quantity.

7. Low-growing flowers suited to the available edge space

A low-growing flower may use bed-edge space while contributing floral resources for beneficial insects. The general benefit of flowering plants is supported by extension guidance; no specific low-growing species or watermelon-specific pest-control outcome is established there. Check the plant’s mature spread and keep the melon’s growing area open.

8. Compact herbs, if they do not crowd the vines

Herbs are sometimes suggested as companions because they can add diversity to a planting, but the cited extension material does not establish a particular herb as a watermelon-specific pest deterrent. A compact herb may fit along an edge; avoid assuming its scent will protect the crop, and do not let it compete for water or shade young plants.

9. A seeded watermelon variety to pollinate seedless watermelon

This is the most directly relevant planting partner for seedless watermelon. Illinois Extension says seedless varieties lack fertile pollen and must be planted alongside a standard seeded pollinator variety. Follow the seed supplier’s planting guidance for the specific varieties and keep flowers accessible to pollinators. A row cover used for early pest exclusion must come off once plants start blooming so pollinators can reach the flowers.

10. Another non-crowding crop that fits the bed’s edges

A compatible edge crop can diversify a planting without occupying the watermelon’s main space, but there is no evidence here that an unnamed crop will improve watermelon growth. Use the practical test: it should not shade the vines, draw heavily on the same water and nutrients, or obstruct pollinator access and maintenance.

Three things to avoid: crowding, shade, and competition

There is no supported universal list of three plant species that must never grow near watermelon. Instead, avoid these three conditions, whatever the neighboring plant is:

1. A neighbor that crowds the vines

Watermelon spreads substantially. A dense planting can restrict airflow and access, complicate watering and weeding, and force crops to compete for space. Follow spacing guidance for the watermelon variety and leave room for its mature vines.

2. A tall or sprawling neighbor that blocks sunlight

Large leaves and long vines can shade nearby crops. A Colorado Master Gardener response found no research supporting the claim that watermelon directly impairs tomato or pepper growth; it identified shading as the practical concern. The same test applies in reverse: do not site a tall companion where it will shade watermelon.

3. A heavy feeder or thirsty neighbor competing for resources

Any neighboring crop can be a poor choice if it competes strongly for water or nutrients. Delaware Extension notes that companions can reduce crop yield through resource competition. Water and feed according to the needs of the plants in the bed rather than assuming that a companion pairing is automatically beneficial.

Fitting watermelon into a tomato, pepper, or onion bed

Watermelon does not have a demonstrated direct antagonism with tomatoes or peppers in the cited expert response. The likely issue in a mixed bed is physical: watermelon’s large leaves and long vines may shade nearby plants, and the melon itself needs room. Trellising can change the footprint, but it does not remove the need to consider sun exposure, support, watering, and access. The available sources do not establish that training watermelon over these crops improves their growth.

For seedless watermelon, keep pollination in the plan. Illinois Extension says a standard seeded variety is required as a pollinator. If using floating row covers to exclude early pests such as cucumber beetles, remove the covers when flowering begins so pollinators can reach the plants. Illinois Extension also discusses drip irrigation and black plastic mulch as possible aids in cooler areas; these are growing aids, not companion plants.

What companion planting cannot tell you

  • It cannot guarantee fewer watermelon pests: diversity and beneficial insects may help, but the outcome is conditional.
  • It cannot substantiate a fixed “best ten” or a universal three-plant blacklist from the cited sources.
  • It does not mean watermelon cross-pollination with cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, or muskmelons changes the fruit currently growing. Illinois Extension says such cross-pollination is not apparent unless seeds are saved and grown the following year.

For practical growing details, consult Illinois Extension’s watermelon guide, University of Delaware Cooperative Extension’s companion-planting guidance, and Maryland Extension’s companion-planting page. The tomato-and-pepper compatibility response is an expert reply from April 2023 at Ask Extension.
