The 11 Best Ant Killers: Baits, Gels, Sprays and Outdoor Options

The right ant killer depends on the location, target ant and product label. Compare liquid baits, gel, sprays and outdoor options without assuming one works best everywhere.

The best ant killer depends on where ants are showing up, the ant species, and what the product label permits. Baits are designed to be carried by worker ants toward a nest; sprays target ants you can see, while outdoor granules and perimeter treatments have their own labeled uses. The products below are a practical comparison of eleven options and formats—not a claim that all eleven were independently tested or that one works best in every home.

How to choose an ant killer

Start by matching the format to the problem. Bait stations and gels are intended to be found and consumed by ants. Contact sprays address visible ants, and perimeter products are for labeled outdoor or boundary applications. These approaches are not interchangeable: use only the product and application site specified on its current label.

  • Ants indoors, but no nest in view: Consider a labeled indoor bait station or gel, placed where ants travel and inaccessible to children and pets.
  • Visible ants: A spray may be an option if its label permits use at that location. A spray is not the same as a bait treatment.
  • Ant activity outdoors: Consider an outdoor granule or perimeter product only where and how its label allows.
  • Uncertain species or persistent activity: Check the product’s listed target pests and consider a qualified local pest-control professional.

For every pesticide, follow the current label. Registration, formulations and directions can change; check the EPA registered-product search and the specific product label before use.

11 ant killers and formats to consider

This comparison distinguishes products and treatment formats supported by the available product and EPA materials. It is not an efficacy ranking: the sources do not establish that one option is best across ant species, homes or conditions.

Option Format and intended use What to check
1. TERRO Ant Killer II Indoor liquid bait stations. The January 2026 EPA label describes worker ants consuming bait and carrying it to the nest. Follow the label for placement and permitted use; the described mechanism is not a guarantee of results in every home. EPA label
2. Advion Ant Gel Gel bait. EPA’s registration record lists indoxacarb as the active ingredient and ants among the target pests. Check the label for target ants, allowed sites and application directions. EPA registration record
3. Ortho ant bait Bait for ants not seen, according to the 2026 EPA label covering Ortho ant-bait products. Confirm the exact product and bait placement instructions; the label distinguishes bait use from spray use. EPA label
4. Ortho ant spray Spray for visible ants, as described by the same EPA label. Use only at sites permitted by the exact product label; do not treat it as a substitute for bait. EPA label
5. Ortho perimeter treatment A separate prevention use described by the Ortho label. Confirm the specific product’s allowed perimeter sites and application directions. EPA label
6. TERRO Ant Killer Plus granules Outdoor granules with manufacturer application directions. Use only at labeled sites and according to the directions. Manufacturer directions
7. Liquid ant bait stations A contained liquid-bait format for indoor use when the specific product label permits it. Choose a registered product, check target pests and placement instructions, and keep stations inaccessible to children and pets. TERRO Ant Killer II is a documented example.
8. Ant gel bait A gel format for bait placement where the particular label allows. Verify approved sites and listed ants on the exact product label. Advion Ant Gel is a documented example.
9. Ant bait products Bait products are intended for ants to find and consume; the Ortho label describes bait for ants not seen. Use the exact product’s directions, rather than assuming all baits have identical placement or coverage.
10. Contact ant sprays Spray products address visible ants when their labels allow the location. Check indoor/outdoor permissions and directions for the exact product. Ortho’s label distinguishes spray from bait.
11. Outdoor ant-control products Granules and perimeter products are options for outdoor use where their labels permit. These are separate from indoor bait stations. Check the exact application site and directions; TERRO Ant Killer Plus granules are one documented option.

The product examples and format distinctions reflect documented labels and registration information; they do not establish comparative performance. A consumer roundup also presents options such as Advion gel, TERRO liquid baits and outdoor products, but its rankings and testing claims are publisher claims, not independent validation here: This Old House’s ant-killer roundup.

Should you use ant bait or spray?

Choose based on what you are trying to address and what the label allows. The 2026 Ortho label distinguishes bait for ants not seen from spray for visible ants, and describes perimeter treatment as a separate prevention use. Bait works through consumption and worker-ant activity; TERRO’s January 2026 label describes workers carrying its liquid bait to the nest. Those intended uses do not promise that a bait will eliminate every colony or that a spray will resolve activity beyond the ants it reaches.

16 Set Ant Bait Stations Refillable, Indoor & Outdoor, Standard Size, Clear
  • Kills the Colony: You will receive 16 sets of ant bait stations, which are sufficient and reusable to effectively control common house ants in your home, such as: Acrobat ant, Crazy ant, Sugar ant, Ghost ant, Argentine ant, Little black ants, Pavement, Odorous house, etc. Note: Liquid ant bait is not included
  • Four Entrances Design: The four entrance design of the ant bait control can accelerate the end of ant invasion faster. Compared with single entrance models, worker ants can reach the liquid ant baits faster, thereby speeding up the distribution process of ant poison throughout the ant colony
  • Sturdy Plastic Shell: Our termite bait stations are made of a clear plastic shell, which is compatible with any type of liquid ant bait. The hard plastic shell is stronger and more reliable than paper and cardboard alternatives and can be reusable
  • Efficient and Neat: Whether indoors or outdoors, just set up the ant bait traps, add liquid ant bait (not included), and then watch how it attracts ants, and you can easily eliminate the entire ant colony
  • Indoor and Outdoor Use: Set ant killer indoor around areas where ants are active, such as skirting boards, near walls, corners, kitchen counters, sinks and refrigerators. In addition, it provides long lasting ant killing power for homes, apartments, schools, hotels, hospitals, warehouses and other areas

Do not mix products or apply one outside its labeled site. If considering more than one format, follow each product’s own directions rather than assuming they can be combined.

How to get rid of ants in your house responsibly

  1. Identify where activity occurs. Note whether ants are indoors or outside, where they appear, and whether they are visible or following a trail. If you cannot identify the ant, use the product’s listed target pests as a check rather than assuming coverage.
  2. Match the format to the site. For indoor bait, spray, or outdoor treatment, confirm that the exact product label allows that use.
  3. Read the current label before application. Follow its placement, application, and precaution directions. Keep pesticides inaccessible to children and pets as the label requires.
  4. Reassess persistent activity. If ants continue or identification remains uncertain, contact a qualified local pest-control professional.

What “best” can—and cannot—mean

There is no supported universal winner among these options. The evidence identifies product formats, label-described uses and registration details; it does not establish a head-to-head efficacy ranking across ant species or settings. A sensible choice is the registered product whose label covers the target ant and location, in a format suited to the activity you see.
