Samsung oven Self Clean uses very high heat to burn away or reduce food residue. Before starting, remove oven contents, clear away excess spills, and follow your model’s manual for rack instructions and controls. The door locks during the cycle and stays locked while the oven cools.
What Self Clean does
Self Clean heats the oven to a high temperature to burn away or reduce residue left on its surfaces. It is intended for residue after you have removed excessive spills, not as a substitute for basic preparation. Samsung’s U.S. Self Clean guidance describes the process and general steps.
Prepare the oven before starting
- Remove cookware, food, and other items from the oven.
- Wipe or otherwise remove excess spills before the cycle.
- Check your manual for rack instructions. Samsung’s U.S. guidance says to remove racks. Its Canadian range guidance says porcelain-coated racks may remain, but nickel racks should be removed. These instructions are not interchangeable: follow the guidance for your model and market.
- Do not use commercial oven cleaners or oven liners for Self Clean. Samsung warns these can damage the oven during the cycle.
- Keep children away while the cycle runs; the oven exterior can become hot.
Start Self Clean using your model’s controls
- Find the Self Clean instructions in the manual for your exact oven model. Samsung control layouts and available settings vary, and the Canadian support page applies to ranges sold in Canada.
- Choose Self Clean using the controls specified in that manual. Some models let you select a cycle duration; others may use different controls or options.
- Start the cycle and allow the door to lock. Samsung says in its U.S. instructions: “The door will lock and a lock icon will be displayed.” Do not try to force the door open.
Do not assume a particular cycle duration, temperature, or button sequence applies to every Samsung oven. For example, a Samsung-hosted manual for the Dacor DOP30T940DS lists a three-hour default and says that model’s door stays locked until the oven falls below 400°F (205°C). Those are specifications for that model, not universal Samsung settings.
Why the door locks—and when it opens
The door locks during Self Clean and remains locked as the oven cools. Wait for the oven to cool and the lock to release; do not pull or pry the door open. Hot air or steam may escape when you open it, so use care.

Clean up after the cycle
Once the oven is cool and the door has unlocked, wipe away any ash left inside. Samsung’s general instructions do not require a special product for this step. A soft cloth, such as a microfiber cloth, is an optional convenience.
Self Clean or Steam Clean?
If your oven offers both modes, the choice is mainly about cleaning intensity and setup. Samsung describes Self Clean as a high-heat option for heavier residue and Steam Clean as a less intensive, water-based option. The available modes and setup depend on the model.

Samsung notes that Self Clean on a range will not function while the cooktop is in use. If a control does not respond, consult the model manual and Samsung’s range troubleshooting guidance rather than repeatedly attempting to start the cycle.
