Color also affects what you see. Good Housekeeping explains that CRI, or color rendering index, rates how accurately LED light renders object colors; a higher CRI can help reveal subtle color differences when natural light is unavailable. Check whether a model offers dimming, multiple brightness levels, or selectable color temperatures; do not assume every illuminated mirror provides all three. Also note where the light sits: forward-facing or perimeter lighting can illuminate the face differently from backlighting. If a manufacturer publishes CRI, color temperature and wattage, compare those specifications as stated rather than treating them as independent performance tests.

Pick magnification for the task, not the biggest number
Use the regular, non-magnified view to assess overall makeup and facial balance. Magnification is useful for close detail work, but the stronger it is, the smaller the visible area tends to be, making it less suitable for checking a whole face at once.
Good Housekeeping reports that its testers preferred 5x for a closer makeup view and that 10x mirrors tend to be small and useful for eyebrow plucking (Good Housekeeping). Treat those as task-oriented guidance, not a universal rule: the comfortable viewing distance and field of view depend on the mirror. If possible, choose a model with a regular view plus a magnified side or surface, and check whether the magnified view is usable at the distance you naturally stand or sit.

Match power and installation to where you will use it
A plug-in or hardwired mirror can stay ready without routine charging, but its placement depends on a power source. A rechargeable or battery-powered mirror offers more flexibility, at the cost of charging or battery replacement. For travel, ask how the mirror is powered and whether the light can be used without being connected; for a fixed installation, verify the wiring and mounting requirements for the exact model.

Check size, adjustment and stability before buying
A mirror should show enough of your face for its intended job without taking over the counter. Round, square and rectangular shapes can provide different viewing areas, but the dimensions—not the shape name alone—tell you how much face you can see. Compare the mirror surface and the base footprint, especially if the counter is shallow or shared.
- Positioning: Look for a tilt or swivel range that lets you see comfortably whether seated or standing. For a wall arm, check reach as well as swivel.
