For the quickest outdoor installation, use a window hook rated for outdoor use and compatible with glass. Clean the glass with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry, apply the hook as directed, press firmly for 30 seconds, then wait one hour before hanging the wreath. Check the hook’s own weight limit first. If you have a double-hung window and want to avoid attaching hardware to the outside glass, pass ribbon through the open window and secure it indoors.
Hang a wreath on exterior glass with an outdoor adhesive hook
Choose an outdoor window hook whose package confirms it is suitable for glass and for the wreath’s weight. Follow that specific product’s surface-preparation, application, cure-time and load instructions; a rating or waiting time for one model does not apply to another.
- Check the package for glass compatibility, outdoor use and the maximum weight.
- Clean the glass with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely.
- Apply the hook according to its design. For Command clear outdoor hooks, Command’s general instructions say to apply the strip to the window and press for 30 seconds, then place the hook and press for another 30 seconds.
- Wait the product’s stated time before adding weight. Command’s US holiday-window instructions say, “Wait 1 hour, then hang up your holiday wreaths.”
- Hang the wreath without exceeding the hook’s stated weight limit.
Command says its outdoor hooks use UV-resistant and water-resistant adhesive and lists an operating range of -20°F to 125°F. Those are Command-specific product details, not a guarantee for every adhesive hook, climate or glass condition. Choose another method if adhesive is not right for your window

Jackson & Perkins describes these alternatives in its guide to hanging window wreaths outdoors and decorating inside. Adams describes its Pro Grade Suction Wreath Hook as intended for large or heavy wreaths on glass doors and windows, but the product page does not state a numeric load rating. Check the specific hook’s packaging or instructions rather than assuming a rating.

Prevent a loose or swinging wreath
- Remove screens before installing the wreath, as they can interfere with placement.
- Do not puncture vinyl-clad window frames to secure a hanger.
- For an exposed or windy location, consider tying the lower part of the wreath to the frame or shutters with fishing line to limit swinging, if the window and building configuration allow it.
- Do not assume any hook is universally damage-free or secure: the result depends on the surface, the load and correct installation.
