What You Can (and Can’t) Clean With Vinegar at Home—Including a Mattress

Vinegar has a few useful cleaning applications, but it is not a universal cleaner. Learn which materials to avoid and how to spot-clean a mattress only when its care instructions allow it.

Vinegar can help with a few specific cleaning jobs, but it is not a universal cleaner or a disinfectant. It can also damage acid-sensitive finishes such as natural stone and hardwood. For a mattress, use it only for a small spot treatment if the care instructions allow it, and keep the mattress as dry as possible.

Where vinegar can help—and where it cannot

Vinegar is an acidic cleaner with limited uses. The American Cleaning Institute says it can help with some laundry issues, including blue detergent stains and hard-water effects, and may reduce unpleasant odors. The vinegar smell can linger, and vinegar is not a replacement for every cleaning product. See the American Cleaning Institute’s guidance on cleaning with vinegar.

Vinegar is not a disinfectant. The American Cleaning Institute states: “Vinegar is not a disinfectant and will not be as effective as an EPA-registered disinfecting product.” If disinfection is the goal, choose an EPA-registered product and follow its label rather than substituting vinegar.

Surfaces to keep vinegar away from

Because vinegar is acidic, it can damage natural stone counters and tile, hardwood floors, and hardwood furniture. Avoid using it on these materials unless the manufacturer specifically says it is safe. Finish, sealant, and product instructions matter; check the care guidance before applying any cleaner.

Using vinegar on laundry and textiles

Use vinegar only for a suitable, specific laundry problem, and follow the garment or textile care label. For stain treatment, University of Georgia Extension discusses vinegar as a mild acid for limited situations involving alkaline stains—not as a general-purpose textile cleaner. In that particular guidance, it advises a mixture of one part vinegar to two parts water for cotton or linen. Do not treat that ratio as a universal recipe. Read the University of Georgia Extension’s stain guidance and test a cleaning agent on an inconspicuous area first.

How to spot-clean a mattress with vinegar

Mattress cleaning instructions differ, so check the mattress care label or manufacturer’s directions first. If spot treatment is allowed, use the least liquid needed. Do not soak or broadly mist the mattress, and avoid rubbing or scrubbing, which can spread the stain or expose more material to moisture.

  1. Remove the bedding. Strip the bed and clean the sheets and other bedding according to their care labels.
  2. Blot the spot. Use a dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible. Press gently; do not rub.
  3. Test first, then treat sparingly. Test in an inconspicuous area. If the care instructions permit vinegar, apply a small amount of distilled white vinegar—or a vinegar-water mixture only if the mattress instructions call for it—to the affected area. Avoid wetting the surrounding mattress.
  4. Blot again. After the product’s stated wait time, dab the area with a clean, dry cloth to remove moisture. Some mattress-care instructions specify waiting five minutes, but that is not a universal rule.
  5. Dry the mattress completely. Keep air moving around the area and wait until it is fully dry before replacing bedding. Do not cover a damp mattress.

The National Association for Continence’s Guide to Home Hygiene describes a method for a particular soiled-mattress situation: remove bedding, blot, apply either a 1:1 vinegar-water solution or a commercial biological cleaner to the affected area, wait five minutes, and blot again. It then recommends baking soda to absorb remaining moisture and odor before vacuuming. Those directions address a specific kind of soiling, not every stain or mattress.

A separate mattress-care sheet gives an example of spot-treating a urine spot with lightly applied distilled white vinegar, followed by a five-minute wait, blotting, and baking soda before vacuuming. Its manufacturer is not identified in the document, so follow your own mattress instructions rather than treating this as a universal standard. The sheet also advises that memory foam be completely dry before linens go back on.

Vinegar is not an established mattress mold treatment

Do not rely on vinegar to treat mattress mold. University of Georgia Extension’s guidance for mildew and mold instead emphasizes removing loose spores and thoroughly drying damp material with airflow. Follow its mold and mildew stain guidance, and seek appropriate professional advice if a mattress has persistent or extensive mold.

Choose a cleaner by the job and the material

Goal What to use Key check
Routine cleaning Plain water or a mild detergent may be suitable, depending on the surface. Check material care instructions and avoid excess moisture.
A limited laundry issue or suitable stain Vinegar may help in specific cases. Follow the textile care label and pretest; the University of Georgia’s dilution guidance applies only to its stated cotton or linen stain treatment.
Mattress spot treatment Use only a treatment permitted by the mattress instructions; vinegar is one possible option for some specific cases. Blot rather than rub, use little liquid, and dry fully.
Disinfection An EPA-registered disinfectant used according to its label. Vinegar is not a disinfectant.

Before cleaning, identify the material, the kind of soil or stain, and whether the goal is cleaning, odor reduction, stain removal, or disinfection. Also consider the risk of color or finish damage and how much moisture the item can tolerate. When the care label or manufacturer’s instructions rule out vinegar—or are unclear—choose a compatible alternative instead.

Reduce mattress mess before it happens

A waterproof mattress cover can reduce a mattress’s exposure to spills and other soils, but it does not make the mattress stain-proof. For routine care, the mattress-care sheet recommends vacuuming with an upholstery attachment; follow the instructions for your own mattress and vacuum.
