It can quickly make a room feel fresher by diluting some stale or odorous air, while also helping remove moisture. It is not a guaranteed instant fix: airing will not remove the source of an odor, and the official guidance does not quantify a universal freshness effect.
What Lüften means—and why it can help
In German home-ventilation guidance, Lüften means airing a room by opening windows to bring outdoor air in and let indoor air out. People, cooking, smoking and heating can contribute pollutants to indoor air. The German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, or UBA) explains that when air exchange is low, pollutants and water vapor can build up. Airing can dilute some stale or odorous air, so a room may smell or feel fresher afterward.
That immediate impression is possible, not promised: the official guidance describes ventilation and odor situations but does not measure how quickly or how much a home’s perceived freshness changes. If an odor keeps returning, find and address its source—such as food residue, a drain, smoke, damp materials or a poorly maintained appliance—rather than relying on open windows alone.
How to air a room effectively
- Open windows wide. Briefly opening a window fully exchanges air more quickly than leaving it tilted for a long time. If practical, open windows on opposite sides of the home to create cross-ventilation and speed the exchange.
- Close them after the airing period. UBA describes the goal as achieving substantial air exchange quickly without cooling walls and surfaces too much. Adjust the duration for outdoor temperature, wind and the room’s use.
- Air again when conditions call for it. Regular airing is useful, but moisture-heavy activities and persistent odors may call for an additional session.
Leaving windows tilted open for extended periods is not the preferred substitute. UBA warns that it can sharply increase energy use and cool nearby wall surfaces; colder surfaces can encourage condensation and raise mold risk.

How long should windows stay open?
There is no single timer for every home and weather condition. Two German public authorities give different seasonal ranges, so treat them as guidance rather than a universal rule:
| Guidance source | Season | Suggested duration | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Umweltbundesamt (UBA), guidance last updated 13 December 2024 | Cold weather | About 5 minutes per room, 2–3 times daily | Estimate depends on wind and temperature. |
| Umweltbundesamt (UBA), guidance last updated 13 December 2024 | Warm weather | Usually 10–20 minutes per airing | Estimate depends on conditions. |
| German federal environment ministry, page status 10 August 2026 | Winter | 5–10 minutes | General seasonal advice; conditions and room use matter. |
| German federal environment ministry, page status 10 August 2026 | Summer | 20–30 minutes | General seasonal advice; conditions and room use matter. |
The ranges differ because they are separate recommendations, not one jointly established exact duration. Use the shorter end when it is cold or windy, and let the need for air exchange and the conditions outside guide you.

When to air: cooking, bathing, bedrooms and basements
After cooking or bathing
Cooking, showering and bathing can produce moisture peaks. Air the kitchen or bathroom intensively soon afterward, and keep its door closed while airing so moisture does not spread through the home.
In bedrooms
Air bedrooms with windows wide open before sleep and again in the morning. These are practical opportunities to exchange air after the room has been occupied.

In basements during summer
Air basement rooms during cooler nighttime or morning hours. Warm outdoor air can condense on cold basement walls, so opening windows during the hottest part of the day can bring in moisture rather than help remove it.
Use humidity as a practical signal
UBA recommends keeping relative room humidity between 40% and 60% to keep mold risk as low as possible. A simple hygrometer can help monitor that range; it measures humidity but does not remove odors, change humidity or prevent mold on its own. If readings remain high, consider whether ventilation, moisture sources or building conditions need attention.

What if the home has mechanical ventilation?
A whole-home ventilation system can make window airing nearly unnecessary in some situations, according to UBA, but it does not rule out every need to open windows. Moisture peaks, odor cases or pollutant events can still call for additional airing. UBA also advises regular system maintenance and filter changes. Persistent stale air despite a working system is a reason to check its operation and maintenance rather than assume that more window airing will solve every problem.
