9 Home Tasks to Tackle Every Fall Before Winter

Before colder weather arrives, focus on the systems and parts of your home most affected by your local freeze risk, construction, and installed equipment. This U.S.-focused checklist draws on federal recommendations; it is not a universal schedule. Do the visual checks you can reach safely, and leave equipment service, hazardous access, and repairs beyond your skills to qualified professionals. Renters should check their lease and ask the property manager who is responsible for maintenance.

1. Schedule heating-system maintenance

Arrange annual professional maintenance for a furnace or heat pump. A qualified HVAC technician should service the equipment according to its manufacturer’s instructions; DOE recommends yearly professional maintenance, and EPA’s seasonal guidance identifies fall as a sensible time to check heating equipment. If you use another heating system, follow its manual and local requirements.

Do not open or attempt internal furnace repairs as part of a fall check. If the system is not working properly, contact a qualified technician.

2. Check the HVAC filter and replace it when due

Inspect the filter and clean or replace it when the equipment instructions say it is due. The right filter type, size, and interval depend on the installed system and household conditions, so check the manual and filter specifications rather than assuming every home needs the same schedule. Use a compatible replacement; a filter that does not fit or suit the equipment is not an upgrade.

3. Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Test both kinds of alarms monthly, following each device’s instructions. EPA advises replacing batteries at least annually unless the alarm has a sealed 10-year battery, and replacing an alarm more than 10 years old.

EPA describes smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home. CO alarms belong outside each sleeping area and on every level. Local code may require additional locations, so check local rules and the alarm manufacturer’s instructions. If an alarm is missing, expired, or faulty, replace it with a compatible device.

4. Arrange chimney and wood-burning appliance service if you have one

If your home has a wood-burning stove, fireplace, or other wood-burning appliance, arrange an annual inspection and service by a certified technician. The service should cover the appliance, chimney, and vent. Homes without wood-burning equipment can skip this task. Do not climb onto a roof or attempt chimney work if access is unsafe.

5. Look for roof leaks or visible damage

From the ground or another safe vantage point, look for visible damage or signs of leaks. Repair roof leaks before winter weather arrives, as EPA advises. A ground-level check cannot rule out hidden damage; contact a qualified roofer if you see a problem or a closer inspection or repair would require hazardous access.

6. Clear and check gutters and downspouts

Clear leaves and other debris from gutters and check that downspouts can carry water away. Federal winter-storm guidance recommends clearing rain gutters, but does not establish one schedule or method for every home. Choose timing based on conditions at your property, and hire a service if ladder work is unsafe or the system is difficult to reach.

7. Protect vulnerable pipes and outdoor faucets from freezing

Before freezing temperatures arrive, identify water lines that run along exterior walls or are otherwise exposed to cold. EPA recommends insulating vulnerable lines where possible. Foam pipe insulation may be suitable for accessible, compatible pipes; check the pipe and product instructions, and ask a plumber about uncertain or hard-to-reach plumbing.

Shut off and drain outdoor spigots before freezing weather, where your plumbing arrangement allows it. Locate the home’s main water shutoff valve so you know where it is if a pipe problem occurs. Plumbing layouts vary, so consult your manual, landlord, or plumber if you are unsure how to isolate or drain a line.

8. Reduce drafts and check insulation

Look for noticeable gaps around windows, doors, and other openings. Weatherstripping or window film may help where drafts are present, provided the material suits the surface and does not interfere with ventilation or operation. DOE’s weatherization guidance covers air sealing and insulation; an energy audit can help find less obvious leakage.

Before adding insulation, address roof or wall leaks. If you are unsure where to seal, or whether a gap serves a ventilation purpose, get a qualified assessment rather than closing it blindly. No particular energy savings are guaranteed: results depend on the home and the work performed.

9. Check exterior appliance vents after snow or ice

During or after snow and ice, check that exterior furnace, stove, fireplace, radon, and dryer vents are clear. EPA advises removing snow and ice that blocks these vents to help prevent indoor pollutant buildup, including carbon monoxide. Keep vents unobstructed, and clear them only when you can do so safely; do not alter or cover a vent.

Prioritize the checklist for your home

  • Heating equipment: Arrange service for the system you actually use; filter checks apply where your equipment has a filter.
  • Wood-burning equipment: Schedule certified annual service only if your home has an applicable appliance, chimney, or vent.
  • Freeze exposure: Give extra attention to plumbing near exterior walls and outdoor faucets when freezing temperatures are likely.
  • Alarms: Check placement, function, and age against device instructions and local code.
  • Access: Keep roof, chimney, and ladder work to qualified services when reaching or repairing those areas is unsafe.

Federal guidance supports these preparation steps, but it does not set a single fall date or universal schedule for every task. Local climate, building design, equipment manuals, local code, and lease responsibilities determine what applies to your home.
