For washable clothes, blot or rinse a coffee stain promptly with cool water, pretreat it with laundry detergent, then wash according to the care label. If the stain remains, try a diluted dish-soap-and-white-vinegar soak if the fabric allows it. Check the stain before using a machine dryer; heat can make a remaining stain harder to address.
What to do first
- Blot, don’t rub. Use a clean white absorbent cloth or paper towel to lift excess coffee. Rubbing can spread the stain or affect the fabric’s color. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends prompt, gentle treatment in its Holiday Stains guidance.
- Rinse with cool water. For washable clothing, sponge or rinse the stained area promptly with cool water, as advised by University of Georgia Extension.
- Check the care label and test first. Follow the garment’s instructions and test the chosen product on a hidden area to check for color or texture changes. University of Georgia Extension advises: “Always read your care label before trying any stain removal method.”
Pretreat and wash with laundry detergent
University of Georgia Extension recommends soaking the garment in enzyme-containing laundry detergent, applying liquid heavy-duty detergent, or using a paste made from granular laundry detergent and water. Choose a method compatible with the garment, then launder according to its care label. These are detergent pretreatments; they are not a guarantee that every stain will come out.
Try a diluted vinegar and dish-detergent soak if needed
If coffee remains after washing, the University of Georgia procedure offers this separate 15-minute soak for fabrics that permit the treatment:
- 1 quart warm water
- 1/2 teaspoon liquid dishwashing detergent
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
Mix the ingredients, soak the stained area for 15 minutes, rinse, and launder according to the care label. This alternate treatment uses warm water; keep it distinct from the initial cool-water rinse.

Check the stain before drying
Inspect the garment before machine drying. If the stain is still visible, do not put the item in the dryer; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advises against dryer-drying stained clothing. Repeat a permitted treatment or use another fabric-safe option. Chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach, or sodium perborate is a possible final treatment only when the care label allows it and the fabric tolerates it. Pretest any treatment for colorfastness.
What if the stain is old or the garment is delicate?
Fresh stains are generally easier to treat promptly. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach notes that “Fresh stains are much easier to remove than those over 24 hours old.” That is a comparative caution, not a guaranteed cutoff: an older stain may remain even after treatment, and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says old stains may be impossible to remove.

These steps are for washable clothing. The cited garment instructions do not provide a separate recipe for every fiber, dye, or finish, so do not apply them to dry-clean-only or delicate garments unless the care label supports the method.
