A washer’s capacity is a useful starting point, but it cannot guarantee that your comforter is safe to wash or will clean properly. Check the comforter’s care label first, then confirm that the item fits loosely in the specific washer and that its manual recommends an appropriate cycle. If it does not fit with room to move, use a commercial washer or follow the care label’s alternative cleaning instructions.
Can you wash a comforter in your washing machine?
Often, but the comforter’s own care label decides. Fillings and construction vary, so a Bedding or Bulky Items cycle does not make an otherwise unsuitable item machine-washable. Whirlpool advises checking the care instructions before washing, since requirements differ by material: Whirlpool’s comforter-washing guidance.
Consider the comforter’s dimensions, thickness and density as well as the washer’s stated capacity. A thick, dense comforter may be harder to wash than a larger but thinner one. GE says the comforter should fit without being tightly stuffed and notes that its size and density affect fit: GE Appliances’ fit guidance.
What size washer do you need for a king-size comforter?
Whirlpool says a washer of 4.5 cu. ft. or above should typically handle king-size duvets and comforters. Its separate comforter-care article describes a large-capacity washer as typically at least 5.0 cu. ft. These are Whirlpool’s general recommendations, not a guarantee or an industry-wide standard. The comforter’s fabric weight and filling can still make a commercial washer necessary.

Use those figures to narrow options, then check the washer manual and do a physical fit check. Capacity alone does not tell you whether your particular comforter will have enough room to move.
How to check whether the comforter fits
Top-load washer
GE says a comforter should fit below the balance ring. It should not be forced or packed tightly into the basket.

Front-load washer
GE says the comforter should fit behind the tub gasket without being stuffed tightly. Check the washer’s manual as well as the visible clearance; a tight fit is a reason to use a larger machine.
Which cycle and detergent should you use?
Follow both the comforter’s care label and the washer’s manual. Depending on the item, Whirlpool suggests considering Bulky, Bedding or Delicate settings and an extra rinse. These are options, not universal settings: cycle names and behavior differ by machine.

On the Whirlpool machines covered by its cycle guides, Bulky Items is intended for large items such as small comforters and has a higher default water level. Its Bedding cycle guide also covers large items such as small comforters and warns against tightly packing the basket. Whirlpool lists gentle, fragrance-free detergent among its suggested supplies. Treat that as manufacturer advice, not a requirement for every comforter; follow the item’s care label and detergent directions.

Account for drying before you wash
Check the care label’s drying instructions before starting a wash. Whirlpool’s guidance for down comforters describes low-heat tumble drying when the label allows it, while its general comforter advice says to air dry when the label requires it or the dryer is too small. Do not assume that a method suitable for down also suits wool, silk or alternative fills: Whirlpool’s down-comforter guidance.

If your comforter cannot fit loosely in the home washer, or the care label and machine instructions do not support washing it there, do not force the fit. Whirlpool recommends commercial washing when the home laundry set cannot accommodate the comforter. A larger machine at a laundromat is a practical fallback; if the label calls for a different cleaning method, follow that instead.

What to look for when choosing a washer
- Usable room, not just capacity: Compare the comforter’s dimensions and bulk with the drum or basket’s available space.
- Fit clearance: Leave room for the comforter to move; use GE’s balance-ring and tub-gasket checks as practical guidance.
- Suitable cycle guidance: Check the manual for cycles intended for bulky or bedding items and follow the comforter’s care label.
- Household space: Confirm the washer’s physical dimensions fit your laundry area, not just that its capacity seems adequate.
- A fallback plan: If oversized bedding will not fit, consider whether a commercial washer is practical for your household.
These criteria help determine whether a washer is suitable for your bedding, but they do not establish which brand or model cleans comforters best. Model-specific capacity, dimensions and cycle instructions need to be checked before choosing.
