To make one, use a holder that fits your bottle, leave room for the holder when filling, and treat the finished piece as open-flame equipment.
What you need
- An empty, clean, dry wine bottle
- A torch wick and a holder designed to hold it securely; check that the holder fits your bottle opening
- Outdoor citronella torch fuel
- A funnel for filling
- Optional small stones, gravel, marbles, or beads for ballast
- For a fitting-based holder, the compatible connector and thread-seal tape specified by its design
Project guides use different neck fittings, including a lid with a wick hole and plumbing connectors. Bottle openings vary, so do not assume a particular coupler will fit. Missouri Wines’ 2025 guide describes a lid-based approach; the PBS Growing a Greener World demonstration uses a reducing connector and thread-seal tape. Choose one holder design and follow its fitting instructions.
How to assemble the bottle torch
- Clean and dry the bottle. Remove labels if desired, then make sure the bottle is completely dry inside.
- Add optional ballast. Put a modest amount of small stones or similar material in the bottom to add weight. Keep the neck clear so it does not obstruct the wick assembly.
- Fit the wick to its holder. Pass the wick through the holder according to that holder’s instructions. Check that the assembly sits snugly at the bottle neck; do not force an incompatible fitting.
- Remove the holder and fill carefully. Use a funnel to pour outdoor citronella torch fuel into the bottle. Leave enough empty space for the holder to be reinstalled without pushing fuel up and out of the neck. Follow the fuel container’s handling and use directions.
- Reinstall the wick assembly. Seat the holder as directed and confirm it is stable. Do not light the torch if the fit is loose or fuel has spilled on the outside of the bottle.
- Let the wick absorb fuel. Wait before lighting. Hello Glow advises allowing several hours for the wick to soak up fuel the first time; follow the instructions for your wick and fuel as well.
- Place and light it outdoors. Set the bottle on a stable surface where it cannot be knocked over, then light it outdoors only. Keep the exposed wick short: The Gardener says not to set it higher than 2 cm.
Use and safety
- Keep the torch outdoors. The Gardener describes this as an outdoor-only open flame. Do not use it indoors.
- Never leave it unattended. Hello Glow specifically warns against leaving the torch burning without supervision.
- Prevent tipping. Place it out of children’s reach and away from spots where people, pets, or passing objects could knock it over. A bottle torch can spill fuel if tipped.
- Keep the wick capped when it is not in use. Hello Glow advises keeping the copper cap on when the torch is not being used.
- Follow the fuel label. Use only fuel intended for outdoor torches, and follow the container’s own safety, filling, and use instructions.
Citronella fuel is a common material in these projects, but the cited DIY instructions do not establish a measured mosquito-repelling effect or guarantee a mosquito-free area.
Choosing a wick holder that fits
The holder is the part that makes this project bottle-specific. Missouri Wines’ 2020 Wine Tiki Torches guide describes a 1/2-by-3/8-inch copper reducing coupler with plumbing tape and a copper cap. That is one project design, not a universal wine-bottle-neck size. Compare the holder’s dimensions with your bottle opening and use the fittings intended for that design. If the assembly does not sit securely, choose a compatible holder rather than forcing it.

For a lid-style holder, Missouri Wines’ 2025 instructions pass the wick through a hole in the lid. The PBS demonstration instead describes a nylon wick and a reducing connector sized to fit the bottle. These are alternative approaches; do not combine their fitting steps unless the parts are designed to work together.

Look for citronella torch fuel and a tiki torch replacement wick. Match the wick to its holder, and verify that the holder fits the bottle before purchasing fittings. A funnel makes filling easier. Missouri Wines and PBS both name torch fuel, replacement wicks, and a funnel in their project materials: Missouri Wines and PBS Growing a Greener World.
