Remove dry debris first, test any permitted cleaner in a hidden spot, and avoid soaking the fabric.
1. Find the care tag and check the manufacturer’s instructions
Look for the upholstery care tag before applying water or cleaner. Ashley says its tags may be under a seat cushion or beneath the couch. If you can find the couch’s model-specific care guide, use it too. The tag and maker’s directions take priority over general cleaning advice.
Care codes are not interchangeable. The examples below summarize guidance from La-Z-Boy and Ashley; they are not a guarantee that every couch bearing a particular code allows the same treatment.

2. Remove loose items and check covers separately
Take off throws and pillows so you can clean the upholstery underneath. Check each item’s own care label before laundering it. A zipper does not mean a cushion cover is washable: Ashley’s directions for W, SW, and WS upholstery say not to remove cushion covers for laundering or dry cleaning.
3. Vacuum away dry debris
Vacuum the couch before spot-cleaning. Use a suitable brush attachment for surface dirt and pet hair, then a crevice tool between cushions and along seams. La-Z-Boy also recommends frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove general dust and grime. These are dry-cleaning steps; they do not authorize liquid treatment on a code that forbids it.

4. Test any permitted cleaner in a hidden spot
Before treating a visible area, try the cleaner allowed by the care tag on a small, inconspicuous patch. La-Z-Boy advises pretesting its W and S treatments, and BISSELL recommends a hidden-area colorfastness test. Follow the product and furniture-maker directions; if the test changes the fabric’s color or appearance, stop.
5. Spot-clean according to the code, without soaking
Apply only a treatment allowed by the couch’s tag and specific maker instructions. For La-Z-Boy W upholstery, use a water-based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner as directed, and work from the outside of the spot toward its center to help reduce circling. For La-Z-Boy S upholstery, use only a water-free dry-cleaning solvent—never water. For X upholstery, stick to vacuuming or light brushing. Ashley likewise cautions against saturating its S, SW, W, and WS upholstery.

Do not assume that a W code makes every water-based process acceptable: La-Z-Boy specifically advises against steam cleaning and hot-water extraction for its W-coded upholstery. Do not use a carpet extractor or a household remedy unless the couch maker’s instructions explicitly allow it.
6. Let the couch dry before sitting down
Follow the couch maker’s drying instructions. BISSELL suggests waiting four to six hours before sitting on upholstery it has cleaned, while noting that drying time varies with conditions; that is product guidance, not a universal guarantee. Let the fabric dry fully before using the couch again.

These steps concern upholstery cleaning and should not be applied automatically to leather or other materials. Check the material-specific instructions for your couch. If its tag rules out DIY liquid treatment or the whole couch is heavily soiled, use a professional furniture-cleaning service rather than trying an unapproved method.
