The best dining room curtains do more than cover glass: they soften daylight, add color or pattern, frame a view, and can make a room feel taller or more intimate. These 29 ideas are variations on those effects—not a ranked list. Choose first by the job the window needs to do: diffuse light, add privacy, shade the room, decorate, or divide a space.

Airy curtains that keep the room light

1. Sheer linen panels

Sheer linen softens incoming daylight while keeping the room visually open. It may provide some privacy, but it is not opaque screening; the view through it changes with lighting conditions. Architectural Digest’s guide to sheer curtains describes them as a way to retain soft light and privacy without total darkness.

2. Sheer cotton panels

Cotton sheers offer the same light-filtering approach with a different fabric texture. Use them when the goal is a gentle, relaxed treatment rather than a darkened dining room.

3. White sheers for a bright, quiet backdrop

A white sheer lets the window remain the visual focus and pairs easily with varied dining-room finishes. It is a simple choice when color and print elsewhere in the room should lead.

4. Warm-toned sheers

Sand, ivory, or another warm tint can give daylight a softer visual cast while preserving the fabric’s airy quality. Check a sample in the room, since the color of incoming light and nearby finishes affect how the fabric reads.

5. Pink sheers

A colored sheer can add a light wash of color without the visual weight of a dense panel. House Beautiful’s sheer-curtain examples include pink curtains in a dining room.

6. A sheer layer beneath a heavier curtain

Pair a sheer daytime layer with a denser outer panel. Keep the sheer closed when you want softened daylight, then draw the heavier panels when you need more privacy or light control. House Beautiful describes this kind of layering; the result depends on the opacity and fit of the actual fabrics.

Tailored curtains that frame the room

7. Floor-to-ceiling panels

Full-height panels draw the eye upward and give a dining room a more finished frame. Architectural Digest shows dining-room drapery used to add depth, dimension, and height. See its window-treatment gallery for the example.

8. Panels mounted high and wide

Mounting the rod above and wider than the window can make the opening feel larger and let more glass remain exposed when the curtains are open. Architectural Digest recommends hanging high and wide as design guidance, but the right placement still depends on the window, trim, and wall.

9. Panels that gently meet the floor

A floor-length panel that just touches the floor gives a crisp, tailored finish. Architectural Digest’s curtain guide recommends panels that gently kiss the floor; treat that as a design preference, not a universal installation rule.

10. Solid neutral panels

A solid neutral is a useful counterweight to patterned upholstery, a detailed rug, or a statement light fixture. Choose its undertone alongside the room’s wood, paint, and flooring rather than relying on a screen image alone.

12. Simple rod-pocket panels

A rod pocket gives a soft, gathered look with a straightforward hanging construction. It can be a good fit for a relaxed room, but check the rod diameter and how easily the fabric will slide before buying.

13. Custom panels for unusual windows

For a very wide opening, unusual height, or another nonstandard dimension, custom panels can address the fit more precisely than ready-made sizes. Get the supplier’s measuring instructions before ordering; methods and allowances can differ.

Color, print, and texture as the focal point

14. Patterned drapery

A printed panel can become a major decorative element. Architectural Digest discusses patterned curtain examples and a wide range of fabric choices. Keep the rest of the room’s patterns in conversation with the curtains rather than making every surface compete.

15. A small-scale print

A fine repeat adds detail without dominating from across the room. It is one way to bring pattern to the window when the dining room already has strong furniture or architectural features.

16. A large-scale print

A larger motif reads more boldly and can help establish the room’s palette. Before committing, consider how much of the print will be visible when the panels are open and stacked at the sides.

17. A single-color statement

Use one saturated color to bring energy to a room of restrained finishes. The curtain becomes a deliberate focal point, so repeat that color in a smaller detail only if the room needs the connection.

18. Cool-toned curtains

Blue, green, or another cool-leaning color can create contrast against warm wood and brass. Compare fabric samples in the room’s daylight and evening lighting before settling on a shade.

19. Velvet for a richer mood

Velvet’s visual weight can make a dining room feel more formal and enveloping. A heavy appearance does not establish a blackout rating: check the product’s lining and opacity details if light control matters.

20. Textured fabric in a solid color

A woven or visibly textured solid brings interest without adding a print. This approach suits a room where the palette is already doing enough work.

21. Pattern balanced with plain panels

Use a patterned panel as the feature and keep an adjacent layer or other windows more restrained. The contrast makes the print easier to live with than repeating a bold motif across every surface.

Partial coverage and layered treatments

22. Café curtains

Café curtains cover only part of a window, leaving the upper portion open to daylight. House Beautiful’s discussion focuses on kitchens and breakfast nooks, so using them in a dining room is an adjacent design idea, not evidence of a measured dining-room trend. Its designers favor lighter, unlined fabric when a less heavy look and more daylight are wanted. Read the café-curtain discussion.

23. A café curtain on the lower sash

Covering the lower part of a window can screen a seated view while leaving the upper glass unobstructed. It is partial coverage, not a substitute for full-window privacy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

24. Café curtains paired with a simple valance

A short upper treatment can finish the window while the café panel handles lower coverage. Keep both pieces light if maintaining daylight is the priority.

25. Curtains paired with a Roman shade

A Roman shade and side panels can combine distinct functions: the shade handles adjustable coverage at the glass, while curtains frame the opening and add fabric. Architectural Digest discusses pairing curtains and shades; select compatible depths and mounting positions for the actual window.

26. A lined panel with an unlined sheer

Let the sheer handle daytime diffusion and use a lined outer curtain when greater coverage is wanted. Inspect the lining description rather than assuming that any lined fabric blocks all light.

27. One decorative panel at each side

Stationary side panels can frame the window when movable coverage is unnecessary. This is primarily a decorative treatment; it will not provide the same light control or privacy as panels that close across the glass.

Unusual ways to define a dining space

28. Chainmail or metal-bead screen

A chainmail curtain can read as an architectural screen: it divides a zone while preserving visual permeability. Architectural Digest describes chainmail curtains in dining and hospitality interiors and notes their substantial weight and installation challenge. Treat this as a specialty installation, not a routine DIY textile panel. Read Architectural Digest’s feature.

29. A curtain used as a room divider

Where a dining area shares space with another use, a curtain can mark a boundary without building a permanent wall. Choose the track or support for the span and the fabric’s weight, and decide whether the divider should filter views or close off the area more fully.

How to choose and measure dining room curtains

Start with the window’s job, then confirm that the panel and hardware suit the opening. A useful comparison is:

Need Treatment to consider What to verify
Soften daylight Sheer linen or cotton Opacity and the privacy level under daytime and nighttime lighting
Cover only part of the glass Café curtain Which portion of the window remains uncovered
Adjust coverage at the glass and frame the window Roman shade with curtains Mounting depth, clearance, and how both layers operate
Add a more formal, enveloping look Velvet or another visually weighty fabric Panel weight, lining, support, and the actual opacity specification
Define a zone without a solid wall Chainmail or a room-divider curtain Support capacity, span, installation requirements, and desired visual privacy
  1. Decide on coverage and finish. Choose whether panels should cover the full window or only part of it, and whether they should meet the floor. That decision determines which dimensions matter.
  2. Measure the opening and planned mounting area. Measure the width and height relevant to the rod or track placement you intend to use. Follow the curtain supplier’s measuring instructions, especially for custom panels or nonstandard windows.
  3. Check the actual listing. Confirm panel count, stated width and length, lining or opacity, heading style, and whether the panel fits your rod or track. Product details and availability can change.
  4. Match the hardware to the treatment. Check the heading construction and mounting conditions rather than assuming every panel fits every rod. For heavy or specialty materials, confirm the support and installation requirements before ordering.

Architectural Digest’s curtain-measuring guide covers measuring and recommends floor-kissing lengths and high, wide mounting as design guidance.
