The Endless Summer brand lists it for USDA Zones 4–9 and a mature size of 18–36 inches tall and wide; actual growth and flowering depend on local conditions.
What is a Summer Crush hydrangea?
Summer Crush is the cultivar Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Bailmacfive’ PP30,359, sold as part of the Endless Summer reblooming hydrangea collection. The brand describes it as compact and suitable for garden beds or patio containers. Its listed mature dimensions are 18–36 inches tall and wide, with about 36 inches on center suggested as a spacing guide—not a fixed rule for every garden design. Endless Summer’s cultivar page and its overview provide those specifications.
Where should you plant it?
Choose a spot with morning sun and afternoon shade, the exposure specified by Endless Summer. How much morning sun it can handle depends on regional heat: the brand says plants in Zones 4–5b can receive up to six hours, while those in Zones 8–9 should get no more than about two hours. These are broad guidelines, not guarantees for every microclimate. In hotter locations, favor more afternoon protection. Too much direct sun can scorch foliage and blooms.
The brand lists Summer Crush as hardy in USDA Zones 4–9. Treat that as a cultivar specification rather than a promise of identical performance at every site; exposure, weather and other local growing conditions matter.

How should you water it?
Aim for consistently moist soil that drains well. Summer Crush has medium-to-high watering needs according to the brand, and Hydrangea.com’s grower listing also recommends evenly moist, well-drained soil. Check the root zone rather than following a rigid calendar: when the soil is dry, water thoroughly; when it is still wet, wait. The brand’s practical instruction is, “If it is dry, give it a good soaking. If it is wet, do not add water.” A small daily sprinkle may not wet the root zone sufficiently, while frequent watering in already wet soil risks waterlogging.
Does Summer Crush need pruning?
Usually, little or no routine pruning is needed. The guidance differs in emphasis: Endless Summer advises pruning after summer flowering, while Hydrangea.com urges caution with reblooming bigleaf hydrangeas and recommends avoiding trimming or cutbacks. A conservative approach is to preserve healthy stems, remove wood that is clearly dead once you can identify it, and avoid hard pruning. If shaping is necessary, trim lightly after flowering rather than cutting the plant back. Do not assume deadheading will guarantee another bloom.

Can you change the flower color?
The brand says soil pH below 6.0 favors blue flowers and pH above 6.0 favors pink, and identifies sulfur and lime as possible amendments. However, Hydrangea.com describes Summer Crush as deep red-pink and cautions that it may not turn blue even under conditions that favor blue blooms. The available guidance therefore does not support promising a particular color change. Test soil before altering its pH, and regard the resulting color as uncertain.
Should you fertilize Summer Crush?
Endless Summer recommends a balanced NPK fertilizer but does not give a formula or application rate. Hydrangea.com says rose fertilizer may be used once in early spring if desired. Neither source establishes that feeding is necessary in every soil. If you choose to fertilize, follow the specific product label rather than guessing at a dose.

What to check if leaves turn brown or blooms fail
- Review the exposure: prolonged or intense sun, especially in hotter climates, can burn leaves and blooms. Afternoon shade is the safer starting point.
- Check soil moisture and drainage: water thoroughly when the root zone is dry, but do not keep adding water when the soil is wet.
- Keep pruning conservative: avoid cutting healthy stems back; remove only wood that is clearly dead.
- Allow for local variation: the listed size, hardiness range and care guidance are specifications and broad recommendations, not a guarantee of blooms at a particular site.
