Tor Alva, a 30-metre tower in Mulegns, Switzerland, was inaugurated on May 20, 2025. Its distinction is not simply that concrete was printed: the printed columns are reinforced and load-bearing, and the prefabricated building is assembled with dry connections intended to let it be dismantled and reused.
Where is the world’s tallest 3D-printed building?
Tor Alva—Romansh for “White Tower”—stands in Mulegns, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, along the Julier Pass route. The project describes it as 30 metres high including its existing base; ETH Zurich’s inauguration report calls it almost 30 metres. The record claim is specifically for a 3D-printed building, not for the tallest building in Switzerland overall. Origen, a cultural foundation, initiated the project with ETH Zurich. The architecture draws on Graubünden’s history of confectioners who emigrated from the region and took their craft abroad. Sculpted columns rise through four storeys, narrowing and branching toward the top to form a domed performance space.
What makes Tor Alva’s construction different?
The printed concrete carries structural loads
In some construction projects, 3D-printed concrete is used as non-structural formwork or a shell. Tor Alva’s printed columns are structural members: they carry loads. That required the team to develop a way to reinforce members as they were printed and after printing, rather than treating the printed concrete as decoration or a temporary mould.

An industrial robot extruded a specially developed concrete mix in layers. The mix had to flow through the nozzle while gaining strength quickly enough to support later layers. ETH reports 2,500 extruded concrete layers and an estimated 900 hours of printing on the project’s facts and figures page. The 900 hours is an estimate, not a reported measured total.
Reinforcement was built into the process
Steel rings were added at regular intervals during printing. Afterward, workers inserted longitudinal reinforcing bars into channels in the printed members and fixed them with mortar. Reinforcement in the upper levels is prestressed. The engineering team tested material samples and full-size columns to assess structural behaviour. At the time of the work, standards and guidelines for dimensioning 3D-printed buildings did not yet exist, making Tor Alva a research-led demonstration rather than proof that printed concrete designs are automatically safe or ready for routine use.

ETH structural engineering professor Walter Kaufmann said the testing results meant the team could “reliably dimension reinforced 3D-printed concrete.” That conclusion concerns the methods developed and tested for this work; it is not a blanket certification of all printed-concrete structures. How was the tower built and assembled?
Tor Alva was prefabricated rather than printed as a complete tower on site. ETH Zurich fabricated the components, which were assembled in levels for the Alpine location. The project timeline lists printing at ETH Zurich from January through June 2024, level assembly from July through September, and dome assembly in April 2025. The completed columns were assembled in Savognin, transported to Mulegns and bolted together level by level.

The project’s current completed-building figures are 32 structural columns and 124 3D-printed elements. Those units should not be conflated: an element is not necessarily a whole column or every part of the building. An ETH technical article published April 11, 2025, instead reports 36 columns and 184 individual parts, without explaining the discrepancy. The available sources do not establish whether this reflects a design change, a different counting method, or both. Can Tor Alva be dismantled and moved?
The building uses dry, bolted connections rather than being designed as a permanently bonded assembly. These connections are intended to make dismantling and reassembly possible. The project planned for the tower to remain in Mulegns for about five years before being taken apart and erected elsewhere; that is a plan, not a confirmed relocation date or completed move.

Prefabrication and dry connections make reuse part of the design strategy, but they do not by themselves establish the tower’s whole-life environmental impact. ETH notes trade-offs: the project uses stainless-steel reinforcement and carbon-intensive printed concrete, and lower-carbon mixes were not used. Material efficiency and intended reuse are design aims, not measured proof of lower lifecycle emissions. ETH’s technical account discusses these considerations.

Tor Alva is both a construction research demonstration and a cultural venue. Its cupola theatre is designed for 32 visitors. ETH’s May 2025 inauguration report said guided tours were due to begin May 23 and performances in July 2025; those were opening-era plans, not a current schedule. The sources describe the project’s intention to bring cultural activity and visitors to Mulegns, but do not establish measured tourism or local economic impacts.

The cultural purpose is integral to the building rather than an afterthought: its branching structure forms the performance space, bringing together digital design, engineering and a programme of events. Origen founder and theatre director Giovanni Netzer described being fascinated by “the interplay between digital design, traditional craftsmanship, cultural memory and artistic form.” ETH’s inauguration account covers the venue and opening plans.
What the project demonstrates—and what it does not
Tor Alva demonstrates that a large, load-bearing concrete structure can be made using robotically printed, reinforced members, prefabricated and assembled with connections intended for disassembly. It also shows why the phrase “3D-printed building” needs detail: structural use, reinforcement, testing and assembly methods matter as much as the printer.
