Then match exposure, thickness and rating, finish, and local availability. No single panel is best for every use.
Start with the application and support conditions
First identify what the panel must do: form part of a structural floor, wall, or roof system; serve an industrial purpose; or provide a surface for cabinetry, shelving, or built-ins. Structural selection depends on support spacing, span direction, anticipated loads, installation, and project and jurisdictional requirements. APA’s plywood and OSB selection guidance recommends defining those conditions before comparing panels.
Plywood and oriented strand board (OSB) are engineered wood structural panels used in building systems and industrial applications. MDF and particleboard are non-structural alternatives with different surface and fabrication characteristics; do not substitute them where the design calls for structural panel performance.
For structural work, read the panel rating and mark
Do not choose a structural panel by nominal thickness alone. APA says plywood is labeled with a Performance Category and decimal thickness designation; the Performance Category is the nominal thickness designation used in building codes. Check the product mark, intended use, grade, rating, and project documents.

A span rating relates to maximum recommended support spacing under its stated assumptions. Install the panel with its strength axis oriented as required. The right rating and thickness depend on actual loads, spans, support conditions, installation, and the applicable code or project specification; without those details, a general guide cannot responsibly specify a structural panel size.
Match the panel to moisture exposure
For plywood, bond classification indicates adhesive-bond exposure suitability—not structural strength or resistance to fungal decay. APA describes Exterior panels as suitable for repeated wetting and drying or long-term weather exposure. Exposure 1 is intended for construction moisture or similarly limited exposure, not long-term weather.

In particular, CDX is Exposure 1, not Exterior. A moisture-suitable bond classification does not make a panel decay-proof: detailing, protection, and maintenance still matter. APA’s plywood guidance explains these classifications.
Separate surface appearance from structural performance
Plywood appearance grades describe veneer quality and allowable repairs, not strength or exposure classification. A is the highest appearance grade, with grades descending through D. APA says C-grade is the minimum permitted for Exterior plywood, while D-grade is limited to applications protected from long-term weather. Unsanded sheathing suits uses where appearance is unimportant; sanded and overlaid panels serve finish or durable-surface needs.

For cabinets, shelves, and built-ins, prioritize the face and finish
When the panel is a visible or finish-facing part rather than a structural component, choose for the surface, fabrication, loading, and exposure. APA describes sanded plywood as a finish-quality option for cabinets, shelving, countertops, and built-ins; it may need little or no further sanding and can be stained. MDO is also mentioned for moisture-prone environments, with appropriate finishing and application.
