Jennifer Aniston’s Bel Air home is a midcentury-modern residence designed by architect A. Quincy Jones and completed in 1965. Its defining design move is not a dramatic departure from that architecture, but a warmer interpretation: Aniston and interior designer Stephen Shadley retained the house’s modernist character while layering in tactile materials, vintage furnishings, art, and garden rooms.
The house and its design approach
Architectural Digest identifies the residence as an A. Quincy Jones–designed home completed in 1965. The magazine’s 2025 retrospective reports its size as 8,500 square feet. When Aniston acquired it, the house had recently been renovated by architect Frederick Fisher. Aniston later recalled that the entry and Chinese-red front door were not to her taste, though she saw potential in the home.
Rather than remove the modernist framework, Aniston worked with Shadley to reshape the interiors around it. Los Angeles designers Kathleen and Tommy Clements and Jane Hallworth also contributed. Architectural Digest describes the goal as preserving the home’s modernist ethos while softening sharp lines and introducing organic finishes and furnishings. Aniston summed up the mix as “Old World meets New World.” Architectural Digest’s 2018 home tour documents the design and her remarks.
How the interiors balance polish and comfort
The rooms combine materials and periods rather than relying on a single style. Architectural Digest’s tour describes hand-painted wallpaper alongside midcentury furniture, silk rugs over polished concrete, antique Japanese screens, and Abstract Expressionist paintings. The contrast gives hard surfaces and clean architectural lines a more layered, lived-in counterpoint.

Comfort was part of the design brief, not an afterthought. Aniston told the magazine, “Sexy is important, but comfort is essential.” Shadley likewise described the priority this way: “No matter how beautiful or glamorous something is, it has to be warm and inviting.” Together, those remarks help explain why the house’s richness comes from texture, art, and carefully chosen furnishings rather than ornament alone.
Custom details and the connection to the garden
Shadley’s account of the project describes a custom bar made with walnut, bronze, and mica, as well as a wood-fired pizza oven in the main kitchen. In the primary bathroom, a sliding glass panel opens to a private garden with an outdoor shower. These details are reported in the designer’s interview and the magazine’s tour, rather than independently inspected here. Shadley’s interview with Architectural Digest offers more of his account of the choices and construction details.
The grounds extend the interior’s room-by-room approach outdoors. Garden designer Marcello Villano and landscape architect Anne Attinger organized terraces, alfresco areas, and Asian-inspired pocket gardens as connected outdoor rooms. The property had also previously included a hillside vineyard. In one private garden, Shadley described the engineering behind a Japanese stone pagoda: “These are hard to earthquake proof—they had to insert a lot of steel inside.”

Architectural Digest’s May 2025 retrospective says Aniston and Justin Theroux spent two years renovating the home and reports a purchase price of $20.97 million. The same retrospective says she acquired it later in 2011 and still owned it at the time of publication. The Associated Press, reporting on May 6, 2025, gave the purchase year as 2012 and the price as about $21 million, citing Architectural Digest. Because those published accounts differ on the year, the acquisition is best described as occurring around 2011–12, not as a settled single date. Neither account establishes a current market value, and the reported ownership is not a check of present title records. Architectural Digest’s 2025 property retrospective provides its later summary.

The figures describe what publications reported about the property; they are not an appraisal. The house’s scale and custom elements may be striking, but its clearest architectural story is the way a 1960s modernist residence was made more tactile and welcoming without losing its original design identity.
