A remote-controlled lawn mower is not just a mower with a radio receiver attached: it combines a cutting deck, powered drive, controls, electrical protection, and a shutdown design that must work together on the specific machine. The two broad routes are to convert an existing mower or to build a dedicated chassis around a mower deck. Documented community and student projects are useful examples, but they are not tested plans or safety approvals for a different build.

Choose between a conversion and a purpose-built platform

A conversion retains a donor mower’s deck and some or all of its existing engine or blade system, then adds remote propulsion and controls. It can reduce fabrication work, but the donor’s frame, drive arrangement, deck attachment, and existing protections constrain the design.

A purpose-built platform gives more freedom to arrange the chassis, drive, battery, and controls around the intended deck. It also makes the builder responsible for designing and verifying more of the machine. A proposed community platform BOM, for example, specifies a chassis and drive components but still labels deck-mount geometry as to be designed; it is a plan, not a completed mower.

Before choosing, define the work: vegetation, ground conditions, slopes, cutting width and height, transport constraints, and how the machine will be operated and serviced. If the requirement includes steep terrain, dense growth, or dependable commercial use, compare purpose-built commercial remote mowers before committing to a conversion.

Understand the system before choosing parts

At a block level, the machine has two control functions—propulsion and cutting—plus power, mechanical structure, and a shutdown path. A typical drive-control chain is:

Operator controls → radio receiver → controller → left and right drive controls → drive motors

The cutting deck needs its own design and control decisions. Battery or engine power, electrical protection, the chassis, guards, and the deck all interact with both chains. A receiver, controller, or motor driver is not by itself a complete safety system.

Propulsion and steering

A differential-drive arrangement steers by varying the left and right drive independently. Motor speed alone is not enough to select drive components: the design must account for the machine’s mass, wheel or track size, traction, grade, desired travel speed, and the motors’ current draw under load, including stall conditions. The motor drivers, battery, wiring, fuse, and connectors must be selected as a compatible system for those loads.

Cutting deck and mechanical integration

The deck mount, blade system, guards, and debris containment are machine-specific. A deck that fits physically may still create problems with clearance, balance, vibration, access for service, or how debris is directed. Do not bypass the donor mower’s protections to make remote operation easier.

Radio control, operator presence, and shutdown

Decide what happens if the radio link is lost, a controller is dropped, a command sticks, or power fails. Review how the operator-presence control and emergency stop act on both propulsion and blade engagement; also determine how the blades stop and how the machine is prevented from restarting unexpectedly. These are design-review questions, not features established by simply adding a transmitter or switch.

Enclosure rating and placement matter outdoors, but an IP rating does not establish that the whole machine is suitable for wet, dusty, vibrating, or impact-prone operation. Protect wiring and connections against the actual environment, and review battery protection and isolation as part of the electrical design.

What documented builds can—and cannot—tell you

Ardumower gasoline conversion

The Ardumower Gasoline community guide describes an existing gasoline mower adapted with two geared drive motors, a 29.4 V lithium-ion battery, a 2.4 GHz model-radio link, an Arduino Nano, two BTS7960 motor drivers, a DC/DC converter, a fuse, and an emergency switch. Two receiver channels feed the controller for steering and speed; the guide says its emergency switch turns the battery on and off. The project lists two 31 rpm geared motors rated at 2.45 Nm and gives a conversion estimate of about 250 EUR. The page’s date is not stated, so that estimate is not a current quote. These are that project’s components and values, not transferable specifications: verify compatibility and ratings for the chosen mower, motors, drivers, battery, wiring, and protection.

Kevin Huang’s student project

Technology Online’s profile of student builder Kevin Huang describes a battery-powered RC mower. Huang began with a remote-control circuit, added a “dead man” switch, modified the mower, and encountered voltage-compatibility and motor-reversal issues. Recalling an attempt to reverse a one-direction wiper motor, he said: “I forced it to go the other way even though it’s not supposed to and it got up to 70° Celsius in two seconds and I thought ‘that’s not right’.” This is his account of one project incident, not a general motor test result. The profile says the project used separate batteries for the blade and driver motor and reports one-and-a-half hours of mowing after an overnight charge; that is a student-project report, not a verified runtime benchmark.

Proposed RemoteMower platform

A community RemoteMower BOM proposes a 50 lb-class outdoor differential-drive platform with 24 V drive motors, 200 mm pneumatic wheels, a 24 V 10 Ah LiFePO4 battery, a 3 mm steel chassis, 14 AWG silicone wiring, and an IP65 enclosure. It calls for a normally closed emergency stop in series with the battery line. The page still identifies deck-mount geometry as unfinished and bench/floor validation as a next step. Its prices are project estimates, not current market prices; the listed chassis components do not amount to a finished, validated mower design.

Questions to answer before selecting components

  • What is the donor and cutting system? Establish whether the mower is gasoline or electric, how its blade is engaged, what protections it already has, and whether remote operation can retain them.
  • What loads must the drive handle? Estimate total mass, grade, traction, travel speed, and wheel or track dimensions. Check motor torque and speed alongside stall current, and make sure the drivers, battery, wiring, and fuse suit the load.
  • How will the deck attach and be serviced? Resolve mounting geometry, clearance, guarding, debris containment, balance, and access before fabricating around an assumed fit.
  • What power architecture is appropriate? Match battery voltage and capacity to the loads and duty cycle, and plan protection and isolation. Separate supplies, as reported in the student project, are one example—not a universal requirement.
  • What will the controls do on faults? Define and verify behavior for lost radio link, dropped or stuck controls, low battery, and emergency stop. Check blade engagement and stopping separately from drive response.
  • Where will it operate? Consider slope, surface, vegetation, moisture, dust, vibration, transport, and service support. A chassis that drives on a floor has not thereby demonstrated capability on a lawn or slope.

Commission in stages, without treating a test as a safety case

A prudent engineering sequence separates basic control checks from any cutting operation. This outline is conceptual and does not replace a machine-specific risk assessment, competent engineering review, or applicable legal requirements.

  1. Review the design before energizing it. Check component ratings, wiring protection, mechanical clearances, guards, shutdown behavior, and the intended response to control or power faults. Keep the cutting mechanism disabled during initial control work.
  2. Check control and drive behavior with cutting disabled. Verify that the controls produce the intended steering and speed response, and examine fault and stop behavior in conditions appropriate to the design. A successful bench or floor check does not establish safe outdoor operation.
  3. Inspect the actual machine under controlled conditions. Before considering cutting, assess how the complete machine behaves in its intended operating environment, including stopping, traction, vibration, temperature, and protection against debris. Do not infer that one successful run validates other terrain or operating conditions.
  4. Reassess after changes. A different motor, battery, driver, radio setup, deck, or mounting arrangement can change loads and failure behavior. Recheck the design rather than assuming the earlier result still applies.

When buying is the better comparison

Commercial machines show what integrated remote mower systems may specify, but the examples below target different uses and their manufacturer claims are not independent comparative test results. Compare the features relevant to the job, not just maximum range or slope.

What the project documentation establishes

The Ardumower guide, student-project profile, and proposed community BOM document examples and reported plans; they do not provide a complete safety case, engineering review, or certification for a reader’s machine. The cited material also does not establish universally adequate radio failsafe behavior or identify applicable legal requirements. Treat design and operating decisions as specific to the machine and its location, and seek qualified review where the risks exceed your competence.
