Check the plant’s light, potting mix, recent care changes, and stems before adjusting its care. A Thanksgiving cactus is Schlumbergera truncata, usually identifiable by pointed, claw-like projections on its flattened stem segments; Christmas cactus generally has rounded segment margins. Store plants may be hybrids or mislabeled, so identification by appearance is not always certain. North Carolina State Extension describes the plant and its growing conditions.
1. Why is your Thanksgiving cactus turning yellow or dropping segments?
Yellowing or falling stem segments can result from too much direct sun or from a mix that has become too dry. Check both conditions rather than assuming one cause: note whether the plant recently received stronger sunlight, then feel the growing mix to see how dry it is.
- If the cactus has been in direct sun, move it to bright, indirect light. Strong direct exposure can scorch and yellow the stems.
- If the mix is very dry, water it thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain. Do not rely on a fixed watering calendar; respond to the mix’s condition.
Clemson Cooperative Extension also identifies dryness and excess sunlight as possible causes of yellowing or segment loss.
2. Why is your Thanksgiving cactus limp or mushy?
Limp growth can accompany either too little water or root problems, so check the mix and drainage. Persistently wet conditions and poor drainage can cause root rot; mushy stems are a warning sign. A very dry mix can also stress the plant.

Although it is called a cactus, Schlumbergera truncata is an epiphytic rainforest plant. It needs an airy, well-drained growing environment rather than waterlogged soil. Use a pot with drainage holes and a well-drained cactus or succulent mix. Let the mix approach dryness between waterings without repeatedly allowing it to become excessively dry. Guidance from North Carolina State Extension, the University of Minnesota Extension, and University of Vermont Extension links excess moisture and poor drainage with rot and decline.
3. Why are the flower buds falling off before they open?
Bud drop often follows a change or stress while buds are forming. Possible triggers include a sudden change in light or temperature, moving the plant, overwatering, or letting the mix become too dry. Keep the plant’s location and care as steady as possible during bud development, and check moisture rather than watering on a rigid schedule.

Long, uninterrupted nights encourage flowering. North Carolina State Extension describes at least 13 hours of darkness as a flowering requirement. Iowa State University Extension also notes that changes in conditions can contribute to bud drop.

Small brown bumps attached to stems, especially with sticky residue on or beneath the plant, commonly indicate scale insects. Inspect the stems closely and check nearby surfaces for residue; do not treat bumps as a watering symptom without examining them.
