Organize your home office around the work you actually do: keep everyday tools within easy reach, clear the floor and under-desk area, and arrange furniture, storage, lighting, and cables to fit the room. You can make many improvements by moving items you already own; an organized office does not require buying a complete new setup.

Start with your work area

1. Clear items that do not support your current work

Remove unused papers, supplies, and equipment from the desktop. Put away, recycle, or relocate items that do not belong to the tasks you regularly do there. A smaller working surface makes it easier to see what you need and use it without moving clutter aside.

2. Keep daily-use items in the primary reach zone

Place the keyboard, mouse, phone, and other frequently used tools where you can reach them without awkward stretching or twisting. OSHA recommends keeping frequently used devices in the primary work zone and placing the monitor directly in front of you, at least 20 inches (50 cm) away. That distance is OSHA’s suggested minimum in its desk guidance, not a measure of organization or a guarantee of comfort. See OSHA’s desk guidance.

3. Store occasional-use supplies nearby, but out of the way

Move backup stationery, spare cables, and materials used only now and then into a drawer, shelf, or nearby cabinet. Choose a location you can access easily without making the desktop the default storage spot.

4. Keep the space beneath the desk clear

Leave room for your legs and feet to move. Avoid storing boxes, bags, or supplies under the desk if they limit the clearance you need. This also makes it easier to shift position during the day.

Make cables and power safer to manage

5. Route cables away from walking paths

Arrange power and device cables so they do not trail across a doorway or other route you walk through. Secure excess slack along a desk leg or another suitable route. A cable tray or clips can help, but neither is required if you can keep cords safely out of the way with what you have.

6. Check cords and plan access to outlets

Look for damaged wires or plugs and replace or address anything unsafe rather than hiding it behind furniture. Position equipment so you can reach its power connections without stretching cables across the floor. UK Health and Safety Executive home-worker guidance advises keeping the area tidy and unobstructed, avoiding trailing cables, checking wiring condition, and providing adequate lighting.

Set up the desk for the tasks you do

7. Center the monitor in front of you

Place the screen directly ahead rather than off to one side, particularly if you use it for most of your work. Follow the OSHA distance guidance above as a starting point, then adjust the layout to suit your vision, screen size, and comfortable viewing position.

8. Group supplies by task

Keep materials used together in the same zone: for example, writing tools and notepads together, call-related items near the phone or headset, and document-review supplies near the papers you handle. This makes it easier to find a set of tools without spreading everything across the desk.

9. Use a document holder when paper and screen work overlap

If you regularly refer to printed pages while working at a screen, a document holder can keep the paper close to the monitor and within view. OSHA notes that this may reduce awkward head and neck posture. Choose a position that lets you read the page without repeatedly turning or bending your neck. See OSHA’s monitor and document-holder guidance.

Choose storage, lighting, and furniture that fit

10. Size storage to the room and the things you keep

Before adding organizers or furniture, consider what you need to store, how often you use it, the available floor and desk space, and whether a storage unit would block movement or reduce legroom. Compare organizers by dimensions, capacity, ease of access, and compatibility with your desk—not by appearance alone. Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) space-planning guidance emphasizes that requirements vary with the work, people, movement, storage, and equipment; its illustrative dimensions are historical examples, not universal current home-office standards. Read CCOHS’s office space-planning guidance.

11. Arrange lighting to avoid glare

Set up the desk and light sources so that windows or lamps do not create distracting reflections on the screen. If the room’s general lighting is not enough for reading or detailed tasks, a movable task lamp may help; add one only if your current setup needs it. CCOHS recommends arranging lighting to avoid monitor glare and eye strain, and says household objects can help improve a temporary workstation. Its telework guidance also recommends a separate, low-distraction work area where possible.

12. Fit adjustable furniture to the person and the work

When choosing or arranging a chair and desk, consider the user’s body size, height, handedness, tasks, equipment, and room dimensions. Adjustability can help accommodate different needs, but a product labeled “ergonomic” is not automatically comfortable. CCOHS describes ergonomics as a process of matching furniture and equipment to workers and their tasks, and recommends trying a chair in a real work situation when possible. Its chair guidance also notes that a chair alone cannot resolve every workstation issue.

13. Consider a footrest if a fixed desk leaves your feet unsupported

If a non-adjustable desk height means your feet do not rest comfortably while you work, a footrest may help provide support. CCOHS recommends a footrest when choosing a non-adjustable desk. Check that it fits beneath the desk and still leaves room to move your legs.

Keep the layout useful as your work changes

14. Revisit the setup and leave room to move

When your tasks, equipment, or available space change, review what belongs on the desk, where supplies are stored, and whether cables still stay clear of walking routes. Build in opportunities to change position and take movement breaks. CCOHS advises breaks and movement during the workday; an organized workspace supports the work, but it is not a substitute for moving.

A practical way to choose what to change first

Start with free rearrangements before buying anything. Prioritize changes that make everyday tools easier to reach, remove obstructions from the floor and under the desk, and keep cables out of walking paths. If you then need a product, check its measurements and fit against your desk, equipment, access needs, and available room. The right arrangement depends on the person, tasks, devices, and space—not on a one-size-fits-all list.
