The right choice depends on usable indoor space, a secure and adequately sized run, access for cleaning, your weather, and the exact configuration you can buy. The seven options below are selected for distinct flock sizes and construction approaches—not ranked by hands-on testing. Treat each maker’s or seller’s hen count as a claim to verify against the actual dimensions.
How to choose a chicken coop
Measure usable space, not just the advertised capacity
Coop listings often lead with a number of hens, but that number is a seller’s or manufacturer’s estimate. Measure the enclosed floor area and check whether the run is included. A 2026 buyer guide says it uses 3–4 square feet of interior floor per standard hen as an evaluation benchmark, with more space needed when birds spend weather days indoors; that is the guide’s stated benchmark, not an independently verified extension recommendation here. See Current Homesteading’s 2026 guide for its methodology.
Assess the run and predator barriers as a system
Check mesh aperture and fastening, latch design, door gaps, and whether the run has a roof or can be expanded. A perimeter apron or skirt can be part of the setup, but no single feature establishes that a coop is predator-proof. Chicken Coop Company advertises half-inch hardware cloth, stainless-steel locks, elevated floors, reinforced doors, and an optional perimeter kit; these are the manufacturer’s specifications, not independent security-test results (Chicken Coop Company coop range).
Match materials and access to your climate and routine
Wood and plastic have different maintenance and repair trade-offs. Compare weather exposure, ventilation, cleanability, replacement-part availability, and the warranty’s covered components and exclusions. Removable trays, outside-accessible nest boxes, and practical run access can make chores easier. Confirm whether the product’s shown configuration includes a run, and review the assembly and setup requirements before ordering.

Choose by the setup you need
For a small flock
Compare the Aivituvin Mobile and OverEZ Classic Small on actual indoor area, cleaning access, and whether either fits your outdoor layout. Their seller-stated capacities overlap, but the available dimensions alone do not establish how many birds either can comfortably house.
For an attached run or larger flock claim
The Aivituvin Extra Large includes an attached run in the buyer guide’s description, while the OverEZ Classic Large is listed with an up-to-15-hen claim. Do not choose between them on the hen count alone: request the interior and run measurements and inspect the enclosure details for the exact versions on offer.
