Francis Ford Coppola’s best-documented home is the historic Inglenook estate in Napa Valley, which his family assembled in stages beginning around 1975. Older profiles also reported homes or other holdings in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Belize, but those accounts are dated snapshots—not proof of what he owns today. The record also includes an office building, a hotel apartment, winery buildings and hospitality businesses, which should not all be counted as private houses.

Inglenook: Coppola’s Napa Valley home and estate

The Napa property is the clearest through-line in accounts of Coppola’s homes. In a 1997 Los Angeles Times report, Coppola said he moved his family to the Niebaum estate around 1975. He described the first purchase as “the home part and the land, not including the business,” a distinction that helps explain why later accounts separate the residence and land from the winery operation. Los Angeles Times, Dec. 19, 1997.

Coppola later recounted looking for a modest summer cottage and instead buying the Niebaum estate. In a 2020 Forbes interview, he remembered the original purchase as including about 100 acres of vineyards; the family subsequently decided to make wine. That recollection is not directly interchangeable with acreage figures reported in other years, which may describe different dates or measures. Forbes, June 1, 2020.

The Inglenook Chateau and the reunited estate

In a 2025 Mansion Global interview, Coppola said, “The Inglenook Chateau was completed in 1887.” He said his family acquired the parcel containing the original chateau in 1995 and completed the work of reuniting the estate’s original vineyards. The interview described the estate at that time as 1,700 acres, including a 235-acre vineyard; those are estate and vineyard figures, not the footprint of the family’s residential buildings. Mansion Global, 2025.

A separate 1988 Los Angeles Times account also described the property as 1,700 acres, with 120 acres in grapes at that time. The figures refer to different publication dates and descriptions, so they should not be combined into a single current measurement. Los Angeles Times, Aug. 14, 1988.

Farmhouse, carriage house and family homes

The 1988 report characterized the estate residence as a century-old Victorian farmhouse. Vanity Fair’s 1990 profile called it a Victorian mansion and said a nearby three-story carriage house held Coppola’s library, sound and editing room, and winery. The carriage house therefore served mixed creative and winery uses; it is not simply another reported family residence. Vanity Fair, June 1990.

In a 2025 GQ interview, Coppola recounted making homes for each of his children on the Inglenook property. The account establishes his description of family homes on the estate, but does not specify their number, design, current ownership or occupancy. GQ, 2025.

Other homes and holdings reported in older profiles

Accounts from the 1990s mention properties beyond Napa, but the terminology matters: some were described as homes, while others were commercial premises or an apartment in a hotel. None of these historical reports establishes present ownership.

Location What the dated account reported What it does—and does not—establish
San Francisco Vanity Fair reported in 1990 that Coppola owned a home there. A 1996 Los Angeles Times profile reported that he retained a San Francisco office building. The reports identify a home in the 1990 profile and an office building in 1996; the latter should not be described as a residence. Neither confirms current ownership.
Los Angeles Vanity Fair reported in 1990 that Coppola owned a home there. A residence was reported at that time; later ownership is not established by that account.
New York Vanity Fair included New York among the locations where he owned homes in 1990. In 1996, the Los Angeles Times specified an apartment at the Sherry-Netherland Hotel. The more specific 1996 description is a hotel apartment, not necessarily a standalone house. Neither report proves current ownership.
Belize Vanity Fair reported a home in Belize in 1990. A 1996 Los Angeles Times profile said Coppola retained his Belize property. The dated reports establish a reported holding at those times. A separately discussed lodge is a hospitality business, not automatically a private home.
Napa Valley Vanity Fair reported a Napa home in 1990; the 1996 Los Angeles Times profile described the 1,700-acre Niebaum-Coppola estate among holdings Coppola retained. The estate is the best-documented residential property in the available accounts, but the 1996 report is still a historical snapshot.

Sources for the dated holdings: Vanity Fair, June 1990 and Los Angeles Times, Aug. 4, 1996.

Hospitality properties are not the same as private houses

Coppola’s broader property history also includes lodging ventures. In a 2016 Architectural Digest interview, he said he bought Blancaneaux Lodge in Belize in 1981 as a remote hideaway. The interview also discusses Palazzo Margherita in Italy: Coppola described restoring the building and giving it a hotel life, drawn in part by its period connection to Inglenook Chateau. These are relevant to a wider account of his properties, but should be identified as a lodge and a hotel rather than counted automatically as residences. Architectural Digest, 2016.

What the record can establish

The public accounts document Coppola’s long association with the Napa estate and provide dated reports of other homes and holdings. They do not amount to a complete, current property register. In particular, the old profiles cannot show whether a property was later sold, and descriptions such as “home” do not always distinguish a private residence from an apartment or a business. The most reliable way to read the list is as a timeline of reported properties, not a present-day inventory.
