The right choice depends on whether you prioritize absorbency, quick drying, grip, easy laundering, softness or fit. Independent roundups from the Good Housekeeping Institute and NBC Select offer useful comparison criteria and product examples, but neither establishes results from Bettesworth Construction testing.
What matters when choosing a bath mat?
Compare the mat’s absorbency, drying time, grip, care requirements, size, comfort and durability as a set. A plush mat may feel comfortable but dry slowly; a quick-drying option may feel less absorbent; and a nonslip backing is a feature to assess, not a guarantee against falls.
- Absorbency and feel: Consider the material and pile. Cotton is generally absorbent and comfortable; pile can add surface area and increase absorbency.
- Drying and cleaning: Polyester and microfiber are often quicker to dry than cotton, though performance varies by construction. Check whether the care label calls for machine washing, low-temperature drying, air drying or wiping clean.
- Grip: Backing material and the floor beneath the mat both matter. Good Housekeeping says rubber or latex backing tends to grip more strongly, while repeated washing can wear away some nonslip coatings.
- Fit and comfort: Check the mat’s dimensions against the available floor area and the way the bathroom door opens. A thick, soft mat may not suit every layout.
- Durability: Look for care instructions and construction details. Foam or backing can crumble or peel in washing, and pile may shed.
How materials and construction change the trade-offs
Cotton
Cotton is a practical choice if absorbency and a familiar, soft feel matter most. It may take longer to dry, and Good Housekeeping notes that some cotton mats may need to be hung to dry to help prevent shrinkage. Follow the product’s own care label rather than assuming all cotton rugs can be treated alike.
Polyester and microfiber
Synthetic mats are often easier to care for and can dry faster than cotton. Good Housekeeping describes polyester as generally less absorbent than cotton, while microfiber is commonly soft and quick drying. These are material tendencies, not guarantees about a particular mat.

#1 Best Overall
- PATENTED DESIGN WITH POWERFUL SUCTION GRIP: a bath mat designed to securely stay in place; this patented bathtub mat features hundreds of suction cups that effectively help secure the tub mat to your shower floor
- EASY WATER DRAINAGE: hundreds of drainage holes allow for water to easily flow under the bath tub mat and toward the drain, helping to prevent water from sitting stagnant beneath the shower mat in your tub or shower
- TEXTURED AND BPA-FREE: the bath mat is constructed from BPA-free materials; it features a unique hexagon design with a pebble-textured topside that is soft on feet; this bathroom mat is soft, flexible, and the perfect home bathroom essential for the whole family
- OVERSIZED AND MACHINE WASHABLE: the shower floor mat is so easy to clean, simply machine wash and air dry; easily air dry the bath mat by hanging it over the side of the bath tub; generously sized bath mat for tub measures 35 by 16 inches, much larger and longer than other mats; providing excellent coverage for shower and bathtub floors
- FOR ALL TUBS, CLIMATE PARTNER CERTIFIED: fits most tubs and inserts; install only on smooth, clean, non‑textured, non‑tiled surfaces; not for use on newly refinished tubs, shower pans, or similar surfaces; designed with sustainability in mind; certified to support initiatives that help address climate impact; carbon footprint measured
Pile and memory foam
A higher pile can increase absorbency by adding surface area, but it may also take longer to dry. Memory foam can feel plush underfoot; Good Housekeeping cautions that it may dry more slowly. Consider whether the added comfort fits your bathroom’s drying routine.
Stone and vinyl
A stone mat is a rigid alternative to fabric, not a soft rug. NBC Select describes the Dorai Home Bath Stone Mat as made from diatomaceous stone and recycled paper, with wipe-down care. Its editor reported personal-use impressions; those are NBC Select’s, not Bettesworth Construction’s testing results. Vinyl tub mats are easy to clean but are not absorbent, so they serve a different purpose from a fabric bath rug.

How the published testing differs from a verified winner list
The Good Housekeeping Institute says its Textiles Lab evaluated more than 20 bath mats and collected more than 200 data points, including construction, backing, weave, fibers, padding, seams, absorbency, drying time, softness, size, appearance and laundering feedback. Its page is titled “9 Best Bath Mats of 2024”; those method counts describe the scope of that evaluation, not a comparable performance statistic proving one mat is safest or best overall.
NBC Select describes five weeks of testing bath mats made from bamboo, cotton and stone, and says it interviewed four interior design experts. Its article displays an April 23, 2024 publication date, despite a 2026-styled headline and references to multiple years in its navigation. Treat its product list as a dated set of examples rather than a current, independently verified ranking.
Rank #3
- AWARD WINNING: Winner of the 2026 HuffPost Shopping Awards recognizing excellence in the home category and problem solving products
- SOFT AND THICK CHENILLE: pamper your feet with the softest, coziest chenille; measuring almost one inch thick, plush pile helps soothe feet and keeps toes warm from the cold floor below
- ULTRA ABSORBENT: our most absorbent bath rug; dense chenille pile captures extra moisture helping to keep your floors clean while stepping out of the bath, shower, or standing at the sink
- TEXTURED RUBBER BACKING: unlike other brands who use PVC or hot glue, our bath rugs are constructed with a durable TP Rubber Backing. PVC and hot glue break down as mats are washed whereas, our TP Rubber mats have been third party tested to be washed and dried over and over again for long lasting use
- FADE RESISTANT AND DRIES QUICKLY: premium microfiber fabric is not only ultra absorbent but also dries quickly; plus, rugs are super easy to clean and fade resistant allowing you to machine wash and dry as often as needed; our rugs have also been given the Confidence in Textiles label, and have been tested for harmful substances according to OEKO-TEX Standard 100; performance, durability and emissions tested
NBC Select quotes Ana Coddington, lead interior designer for Archival Designs, warning that flimsy, low-quality mats may lack absorbency or durability and can pose a hazard if too thin or slippery. That supports checking both construction and floor grip; it does not establish that any listed model prevents slips.

How to assess grip and care before buying
Check the backing against your floor
Rubber or latex backing tends to grip more strongly, according to Good Housekeeping, but backing effectiveness depends on the floor and condition of the mat. A separate rug underlay is another possible option if the mat’s own backing is inadequate. Verify that an underlay is compatible with both the floor and mat, and place it according to its instructions.
Read the care label, not just the material name
Washing can affect foam and nonslip backing, and pile can shed. The cited roundups describe product-specific differences such as machine washing, low-temperature drying, air drying and wipe-down care. Do not assume that instructions for one cotton, synthetic or stone mat apply to another.

Which type should you choose?
- Choose cotton if absorbency and a comfortable fabric feel are priorities, and you can accommodate its drying and care needs.
- Consider polyester or microfiber if quicker drying and simpler care matter, while recognizing that absorbency varies by product.
- Consider a higher-pile or memory-foam construction for added softness only if its drying demands work for your bathroom.
- Consider stone if you want a rigid surface with wipe-down care rather than a conventional fabric rug.
- Compare backing and floor compatibility carefully if grip is a major concern; no backing description alone guarantees fall prevention.
