For construction and other work settings, choose a mat for the task and environment, then assess coverage, resilience, stable edges, cleaning needs, and warranty. A mat can cushion standing on a hard floor, but it is not a standalone fix for discomfort.
What an anti-fatigue mat can—and cannot—do
An anti-fatigue mat is intended to cushion workers who stand on hard flooring. It may complement changes in standing position and appropriate footwear, but it does not by itself eliminate discomfort. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) advises considering the floor, footwear, and work design alongside the mat (CCOHS guidance on standing at work).
How to choose a mat for a worksite
Start with the task and environment
Consider where workers will stand, how they move through the area, and the conditions the mat must withstand. A fixed workstation, a moving work area, and a space requiring frequent cleaning may call for different coverage and materials. Match the product to the actual task rather than selecting by thickness alone.
Check coverage and configuration
Cover the area where workers stand and move while doing the task. A mat that is too small may leave uneven transitions between the mat and floor; a modular format may help when a runner or corners are needed. Check that the installation suits carts, access routes, and the available floor space.

Balance resilience with firmness
CCOHS cautions that “Softer and thicker may not always be better.” Look for a mat that provides resilient support without being so soft that standing becomes uncomfortable. Thickness alone does not establish suitability.
Inspect edges, stability, and maintenance
A mat that slips, has unsafe edges, or is poorly installed can create a trip or fall hazard. Check edge treatment and whether the mat stays in place in the intended setting. Account for cleaning requirements and replace mats that are damaged or worn.

What workplace evaluation guidance says about dimensions
In report 2019-0024-3398, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommended mats at least 0.5 inches thick, with optimal compressibility (firmness) of 3%–4%, beveled edges, and at least 8 inches of mat under a workstation to keep standing surfaces even. It also recommended coverage across the area employees move while doing the task, and replacement when mats appear worn or are damaged. These are recommendations from a particular workplace evaluation, not a universal certification threshold or standard (NIOSH report 2019-0024-3398).

The source set’s industry guide says OSHA does not specifically require or certify anti-fatigue mats. That does not settle an employer’s broader hazard-control duties or applicable wet-floor requirements. Requirements depend on the workplace and applicable rules; consult the relevant OSHA regulation or local regulator for compliance decisions (Ergo Matting’s OSHA context guide).
