Choose each part for its intended use, location, electrical ratings and local requirements. Because this title does not specify a country or project, there is no single wire size, plug type or installation method that is suitable for every job.
What counts as electrical supplies and materials?
An electrical installation uses materials with different functions. The right category depends on whether a component carries power, encloses or routes conductors, makes a connection, or helps address an electrical hazard.
- Conductors and cables: Carry electrical current. Their construction and ratings must suit the application and conditions of use.
- Wiring methods and enclosures: Route and protect conductors. Applicable rules specify which methods and cable types are permitted for particular uses and locations.
- Plugs and socket-outlets: Connect portable equipment to a supply. Their physical configuration and electrical ratings must match the equipment and the local system.
- Grounding and protective components: Help address electrical hazards as part of a properly designed system. They do not make unsuitable materials or unsafe work acceptable.
For example, OSHA’s U.S. workplace wiring provisions address cable types and wiring methods as well as receptacles, cord connectors, attachment plugs and ratings. Those provisions illustrate why selection is application-specific; they are not a universal materials list for every building.
How should you choose wire and cable?
Start with the project requirements rather than choosing a conductor by appearance or a general rule of thumb. Wire and cable selection depends on the intended application, installation method, location, electrical load and the rules adopted where the work will be done.

- Copper Terminals with Color-Coded Insulation: The wire crimp connectors use copper for strong conductivity and corrosion resistance, with red, blue, and yellow insulation sleeves that clearly indicate wire ranges for quick and accurate selection
- Versatile Wire Processing Tool: The included tool handles cutting, stripping, and crimping, removing the need for separate tools and helping you complete solderless electrical repairs efficiently at home, in the garage, or on the go
- Sturdy Case with Second-Life Use: All components come organized in a durable carrying case that protects the terminal kit during storage; once the connectors are used, the empty box can be repurposed as a toolbox, parts organizer, or hardware storage case
- Wide Range of Everyday Applications: This wire connector kit covers common connection needs for automotive wiring, boat electronics, home electrical projects, and workshop repairs, providing a practical assortment of ring, butt, spade, and fork terminals for daily tasks
- Application and location: Identify what the cable will supply and where it will be installed. A method allowed for one use or environment may not be allowed for another.
- Construction and size: Check the conductor and cable construction specified for the application. Do not assume a wire size is suitable without the project details and applicable rules.
- Voltage and current ratings: Confirm that the ratings suit the supply and equipment. A component’s physical fit alone does not establish its electrical suitability.
- Environmental exposure: Account for the conditions at the installation location and select materials approved for them.
- Code and product requirements: Verify the locally applicable installation rules and relevant product standards before purchase or installation.
OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.305 addresses wiring methods, components and equipment for general use in the U.S. workplace, including cable and wiring categories for specified cable-tray uses. It does not provide a universal wire-selection recipe for homes or for projects in other jurisdictions. Read OSHA’s wiring-methods standard.
How do plugs and socket-outlets differ?
Plugs and socket-outlets must suit both the electrical system and the equipment. Check rated voltage and current, grounding and polarity provisions, the local connection system, intended environment and applicable product requirements. A plug that fits a socket is not, by that fact alone, proof that the equipment and supply are electrically compatible.

IEC 60884-1:2022 covers household and similar-use AC plugs and fixed or portable socket-outlets, with or without earthing contact, rated above 50 V and through 440 V, at currents up to 32 A. For accessories with screwless terminals, the maximum current in that scope is 16 A. The IEC catalog page identifies a corrected version dated July 2026. This standard’s scope does not make regional plug systems interchangeable or replace national adoption and local rules. See the IEC 60884-1 catalog entry.
National systems vary. IEC TR 60083:2015 describes household plug and socket-outlet systems standardized in IEC member countries for systems above 50 V and through 440 V. The catalog records its publication date as 2015-10-29 and a 2026 stability date. It is a reference to national systems, not evidence that a travel adapter makes a device suitable for a different supply. See the IEC TR 60083 catalog entry.

What safety and code limits should guide the work?
Electrical hazards can include shock, electrocution, fires and explosions. OSHA identifies insulation, guarding, grounding, electrical protective devices and safe work practices among possible controls. Its electrical standards are designed to protect employees exposed to those dangers. Read OSHA’s electrical safety overview.
OSHA requirements cited here are U.S. workplace requirements, not a substitute for residential or commercial electrical codes. OSHA’s standards index distinguishes its regulations from national consensus standards such as NFPA 70; it also notes that State Plans may have different or more stringent requirements while remaining at least as effective. The rules applicable to a project depend on its location, use and governing authority. Check OSHA’s standards index.
