The best wet-and-dry vacuum depends first on what you need to clean. For everyday spills and washing sealed hard floors, choose a cordless floor washer; for vehicles, workshops, larger liquid spills, and debris, choose a wet/dry shop vacuum. They solve different jobs: a floor washer’s small water tanks and roller-care routine are not a substitute for a large-capacity utility vac, and a shop vac is not necessarily designed to wash a kitchen floor.
Choose a floor washer or a shop vac first
| Machine type | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Cordless floor washer or vacuum-mop | Routine pickup of wet and dry messes while washing sealed hard floors | Floor compatibility, clean- and dirty-water tank sizes, runtime, weight, edge and under-furniture reach, dock cleaning and drying, and manual upkeep |
| Wet/dry shop vacuum | Vehicle interiors, garages, workshops, larger spills, and debris | Tank capacity, cord or battery, wet-pickup setup, airflow, hose reach, mobility, drain, attachments, noise, and storage |
For an average homeowner choosing a shop vac, Good Housekeeping’s 2026 guide suggests a 6–10-gallon tank; it points to 2 gallons for car cleaning and a larger machine for a serious workshop or recurring flood cleanup. Those are buying guidelines, not guarantees about how much liquid a particular machine can safely collect. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for wet pickup, filters, and disposal.
Floor washers for everyday hard-floor messes
Floor washers combine wet and dry pickup with floor washing, but their performance and upkeep vary. Compare the surface they support, how often you must refill or empty tanks, and what the dock does after a run. Consumer Reports says its combo vacuum-mop testing evaluates wet and dry pickup, stain removal, runtime, and ease of cleaning, including emptying and rinsing the dirty tank. It notes that plain water can be used in tested combos, while some machines call for a manufacturer-specified detergent.
Tineco Floor One S7 Pro: a hard-floor-focused all-round choice
TechRadar’s guide, updated August 7, 2026, names the Tineco Floor One S7 Pro its overall wet-dry pick. Its listed specifications are 0.85 L clean-water capacity, 0.72 L dirty-water capacity, 21.5 lb weight, and a maximum runtime of 40 minutes. TechRadar describes multiple cleaning modes and hard-floor use; it also says the dirty-water tank still needs to be emptied and rinsed after almost every use. Treat it as an editorial choice for hard-floor cleaning, not a universal vacuum.

Roborock F25 Ace: lighter and designed to lie flat
TechRadar lists the Roborock F25 Ace as runner-up, with 0.74 L clean-water and 0.72 L dirty-water tanks, a listed weight of 13.7 lb, and a maximum listed runtime of 60 minutes. Its reviewer says it is unsuitable for carpets and rugs, lies flat under furniture, and has a dock that washes and hot-air dries the roller. Availability varies by country: TechRadar specifically said the Ace was not available in the UK when its guide was updated. Check the exact model and your market before choosing it.
Shark HydroVac Cordless: check the generation and upkeep
TechRadar’s guide lists the Shark HydroVac Cordless as its budget pick, with a 0.5 L water tank, 8.7 lb weight, and up to 25 minutes of runtime. Its reviewer says the dirty tank needs emptying after each use and that the brush roll may need to be removed and left to dry for 24 hours after self-cleaning. The guide notes that the US line has since been refreshed with HydroVac MessMaster, while UK shoppers may still find the reviewed WD210. Confirm the model generation and country listing rather than assuming those names describe the same machine.

Shop vacs for vehicles, spills, and work areas
Shop-vac capacity is only one part of the choice. A larger tank can mean fewer trips to empty it, but may take more room to store and be harder to maneuver. Hose reach, caster mobility, a drain plug, attachments, power source, noise, and the machine’s wet-pickup instructions can matter as much as airflow. Good Housekeeping’s August 26, 2026 guide says its evaluation included dry debris, wet pickup, maneuverability, drainage, accessories, runtime, and noise.
Ridgid 12-Gallon: Good Housekeeping’s overall pick
Good Housekeeping names the Ridgid 12-Gallon Shop Vac its overall pick and lists airflow at 144 CFM. That is a specification reported for this named model, not a general measure of how well every vacuum performs on every material.

DeWalt Stealthsonic Quiet 9-Gallon: a value pick
Good Housekeeping names the DeWalt Stealthsonic Quiet 9-Gallon its value pick. Compare its current configuration and included attachments with the job you have in mind; the guide’s category label is an editorial judgment, not a promise of the lowest current price.
Ryobi 40V 10-Gallon: battery-powered capacity
Good Housekeeping names the Ryobi 40V 10-Gallon its battery-powered pick and lists it at 80 CFM. In Good Housekeeping Institute testing, this cordless model picked up two gallons of water in under 10 seconds. That is a source- and model-specific test result, not a guaranteed result on another surface or with a different liquid. Good Housekeeping also cites approximately 30 minutes as an upper runtime for some heavy-duty battery shop vacs; runtime depends on the specific machine and conditions, so check the model’s stated operating limits.

Craftsman 16-Gallon: for larger cleanup jobs
Good Housekeeping names the Craftsman 16-Gallon its large-capacity pick. It lists 176 CFM and notes a flexible hose, blower port, and oversized drain plug. Car and Driver’s March 31, 2026 guide also highlights a Craftsman 16-Gallon for big messes, while cautioning that the unit takes substantial storage space.
When a smaller shop vac makes more sense
Not every job needs a large tank. Car and Driver’s March 31, 2026 guide assigns different roles to four models: Stanley 6-Gallon for everyday use, Craftsman 16-Gallon for big messes, Vacmaster 5-Gallon wall-mount for saving floor space, and Milwaukee M18 Fuel Packout 2.5-Gallon for versatility. These are that guide’s editorial categories, not a universal ranking.

The Stanley example shows why capacity claims need context. Car and Driver lists 6 gallons as its claimed capacity but reports 4.3 gallons as the water capacity it tested; its 10 lb unit also struggled with the largest mulch pieces in the guide’s testing. A compact vac can suit routine or vehicle cleanup, but the stated tank capacity alone does not establish usable liquid capacity or debris performance.

- Kitchen spills and routine sealed-floor washing: compare floor washers by floor compatibility, tank handling, runtime, weight, and the cleaning and drying work left after the dock cycle.
- Car interiors: consider a compact shop vac, hose reach, and car-cleaning attachments. Good Housekeeping’s 2026 guidance suggests a 2-gallon model for car cleaning.
- Garage or general home utility work: Good Housekeeping suggests 6–10 gallons for an average homeowner. Check whether the model can handle the debris and wet pickup you expect.
- Workshop debris or recurring flood cleanup: look at larger-capacity shop vacs, drainage, mobility, hose and accessory options, and storage space.
- Limited storage or no convenient outlet: consider a wall-mounted or battery model, but weigh space or cord independence against capacity, runtime, and the need to recharge.
Check before buying
- Identify the exact job and surface. Decide whether you need to wash hard floors or collect liquid and debris in a vehicle, garage, or work area. Confirm carpet and rug restrictions for a floor washer.
- Check capacity and operating limits. Compare clean- and dirty-water tanks on a floor washer, or tank capacity and wet-pickup instructions on a shop vac. Do not treat claimed capacity as a tested liquid capacity.
- Consider how you will handle the machine. Compare weight, under-furniture reach, hose length, caster mobility, drain access, and storage dimensions against your space and route to the cleanup.
- Plan for power and runtime. Check the model’s runtime or cord requirements for the job. A listed maximum runtime is not a promise of the same runtime in every mode or condition.
- Understand after-use care and compatibility. Find out whether the dirty tank, roller, filter, or other parts need rinsing, drying, or replacement. Use only compatible bags, filters, rollers, and cleaning solution, and verify the fit and detergent instructions for the exact model.
- Confirm current model and regional availability. Product names and generations can differ by country and change over time. Check the current listing and manufacturer instructions before purchase.
What the rankings can—and cannot—tell you
The named picks above are editorial recommendations from specific guides, not a single head-to-head ranking across floor washers and shop vacs. Good Housekeeping describes lab and home evaluation for its shop-vac guide, while TechRadar and Car and Driver provide their own categories and model-specific observations. Compare the factors relevant to your job, and verify current model details rather than treating a guide’s pick as a universal winner.
