You’re unlikely to keep squirrels out of an entire yard, but you can make the area less inviting and protect the places they’re damaging. Start by removing easy food sources, then use mesh around vulnerable plants or a baffle or squirrel-resistant feeder to address birdseed raids.
First, identify what the squirrels are targeting
Digging in pots, eating planted seeds or fruit, and raiding a bird feeder call for different fixes. Watch where the damage happens and when: that helps you direct barriers and cleanup to the problem spot instead of trying to exclude squirrels from the whole property.
University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension says it is “nearly impossible to keep squirrels out of large areas, including your yard.” The practical goal is to reduce damage at specific beds, pots, and feeders.
Remove food and other easy rewards
Make the yard less rewarding before adding devices or barriers. Birdseed, pet food, garbage, fallen nuts and seed, and accessible compost can attract wildlife. Store birdseed and pet food in closed containers, secure garbage and compost, and sweep up spilled seed and scraps. If a feeder is drawing squirrels close to a garden, consider taking it down temporarily.

UF/IFAS notes that removing food and other resources can be more cost-effective than relying on barriers, scare tactics, repellents, or removal. It is a useful first step, though it will not keep squirrels away from food available elsewhere.
Protect garden beds, seedlings, and pots with mesh
Cover the vulnerable area
For planted seeds, seedlings, or a small grouping of plants, Nebraska Extension recommends 1/2-inch wire mesh. Use it as a cover or enclosure sized to the plants and site, and secure the edges so squirrels cannot simply push underneath. Check that the barrier does not obstruct plant growth or routine watering, and inspect it for gaps or damage.
A mesh fence can also protect a garden plot. Its design should account for digging as well as access over the top. An Ask Extension answer relaying Cornell guidance describes burying a fence 6 inches and turning it outward 6 inches; treat that as an example, not a universal specification. Soil, bed construction, and the location all affect how a barrier needs to be installed.
Use barriers where they matter
Mesh is most practical around a particular bed, pot, or small crop area—not as a promise to squirrel-proof a large yard. Protect the plants being damaged, then monitor the setup and adjust it if squirrels find a gap or another route in.
Keep squirrels off bird feeders
Feeder access is a separate problem from garden protection. A properly placed pole baffle or a feeder designed to limit squirrel access can help, but squirrels are agile and may use nearby branches, fences, roofs, or other launch points. Review the surroundings as well as the feeder itself, and clean up seed that falls below it.

- Effective Squirrel Repellent – Made with concentrated natural peppermint oil, these squirrel repellent balls release a long-lasting scent that helps discourage squirrel activity around gardens, bird feeders, and outdoor living areas without harming wildlife.
- Natural Plant-Based Formula – A simple Squirrel Deterrent made with natural peppermint and garlic oils. No sprays, traps, or harsh chemicals. Great for use around homes, patios, sheds, and attics.
- Easy to Place – Each ball is individually wrapped for freshness and comes with a mesh bag for hanging or placing wherever squirrels are active. Ideal around bird feeders, garages, storage areas, roofs, and trees.
- Indoor & Outdoor Protection – Works well as a Rodent Repellent in attics, garages, sheds, crawl spaces, gardens, flower beds, vegetable patches, orchards, and around bird feeders where squirrels frequently visit.
- Long-Lasting Performance – Each application lasts approximately 1–3 months under normal conditions. It can also be used as a Chipmunk Repellent around yards, lawns, trees, and outdoor spaces. Duration may vary depending on weather and placement.
If the feeder continues to attract squirrels near vulnerable plants, removing it for a time may be more practical than repeatedly trying new deterrents. No feeder or baffle should be treated as a guaranteed barrier.

Repellents are limited by outdoor conditions: rain and exposure can reduce their persistence, so reapplication may be required. Follow the current product label for the intended location and crop. Do not apply a repellent to edible portions unless its label explicitly permits that use. Squirrels may also become accustomed to some repellents.
A recent Ask Extension response mentions motion-triggered sprinklers anecdotally, but the available evidence does not establish them as a dependable fix. Treat scare devices as an experiment rather than a proven cure, and do not assume that pepper, noise, or predator decoys will reliably solve the problem.

Choose a fix by the area and upkeep it requires
| Approach | Best fit | Upkeep and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Remove or secure food | Spilled seed, pet food, garbage, compost, or a feeder attracting squirrels | Requires consistent storage and cleanup; reduces available rewards but does not exclude squirrels from the property. |
| 1/2-inch wire mesh | Individual plants, pots, or a small garden grouping | Needs sound installation and inspection; barriers must suit the site and the risk of digging. |
| Feeder baffle or squirrel-resistant feeder | Birdseed being taken from a feeder | Placement matters; nearby structures can offer squirrels another route. Clean up fallen seed. |
| Repellent | A labeled use area where physical protection is impractical | Weather can shorten effectiveness, reapplication may be needed, and animals can habituate. Follow the label. |
| Motion-triggered sprinkler or other scare device | A trial in a suitable location | Dependable success is not established by the available evidence. |
When to seek local advice
If the damage is severe or squirrels are entering a building, contact your local extension office or a qualified local wildlife-control professional. Capture and relocation rules vary by location; restrictions noted by WVU Extension apply to its state and should not be assumed to describe the law elsewhere. Check current local requirements before handling or moving wildlife.
