Before you buy bees or equipment, confirm that a hive is allowed at your exact address. Then learn the basics, choose equipment that suits your site and lifting ability, and line up local support for seasonal colony care. Backyard beekeeping is recurring livestock management—not a one-time installation—and your first priority is helping the colony stay healthy through winter.

Can you keep bees where you live?

Start with the rules for your own city, county, and property. Contact your city or county code or zoning office and your state apiary authority or extension program. Requirements may cover whether beekeeping is allowed, the number of colonies, registration, setbacks, hive placement, nuisance conditions, or rules for selling honey. Those details vary by location; guidance for one state does not establish the rules elsewhere.

University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources advises checking local code enforcement, while Cornell recommends checking community, city, county, and state requirements before buying bees or equipment. See the UC ANR Beekeeping Basics guide and Cornell’s beekeeping guidance. If the local answer is unclear, get confirmation from the relevant authority before spending money.

Learn the seasonal work before you buy

Take a beginner class, contact a local beekeeping association, or find an experienced mentor. A local source can help you understand regional timing, forage, suppliers, and pest management—details that a general guide cannot settle for your yard. UC ANR points readers to UC Davis bee-lab classes; availability and relevance depend on where you live.

The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension describes beekeeping as “livestock management”: it involves routine care, seasonal decisions, and hands-on problem solving. Its January 16, 2026 beginner guide advises newcomers not to go it alone. Build a local support connection before ordering bees, rather than relying on online instructions when a colony needs attention.

Choose a hive format and compatible equipment

Buy equipment for one hive format rather than assuming parts will fit across designs. UC ANR describes the 10-frame Langstroth as a common hive with interchangeable components; top-bar hives use a different design with removable bars. The better fit depends on what your local mentor and suppliers know, which parts are available, how you prefer to inspect a colony, and what you can safely lift and handle.

Choice What to consider
Langstroth Common format with interchangeable components, according to UC ANR. Confirm frame count and box dimensions when buying replacement parts.
Top-bar Uses removable bars rather than the Langstroth component system. Check whether a local mentor and supplier can support this format.

A compatible Langstroth beekeeping starter kit can bundle many basics, but compare its contents and frame count with the hive you intend to run. Bees are not necessarily included. Typical equipment includes hive boxes and frames, a stable stand, a veil and protective clothing, a smoker, and a hive tool. A feeder may be useful during establishment, depending on conditions and local advice. UC ANR notes that a full deep box can weigh more than 90 pounds; consider box depth and your lifting ability before choosing a setup. See NC State Extension’s equipment overview.

Pick a site that works for bees and people

Choose a level, stable location with drainage and safe access for inspections. Think through sunlight, wind, forage, and water, as well as the bees’ flight path and the way people use nearby yards. Bees need a safe place to land at a water source; avoid encouraging them to use a neighbor’s pool or a busy shared area.

  • Keep the entrance away from routine foot traffic, children’s play areas, and pet activity.
  • Consider a windbreak and dappled sunlight, as suggested by UC ANR.
  • Check property lines and required setbacks before settling on a location; site-planning advice does not replace local rules.
  • Talk with neighbors about the plan and consider how nearby people use their outdoor space.

Cornell’s guidance also highlights suburban flight paths and water. In a compact yard, those practical considerations can matter as much as the space occupied by the hive itself.

Find bees through a reputable local source

Ask a local bee club or experienced mentor for supplier recommendations, and follow regional timing and transport advice. A nucleus colony, or nuc, gives a new hive a head start: UC ANR describes one as a queen, workers, brood, and food on three to five frames. Ask sellers exactly what is included and what support they provide.

Packages and established colonies are other possible ways to obtain bees, but their contents and handling differ. Confirm details with the seller rather than treating them as interchangeable with a nuc. North Carolina readers should note that NC State advises buying from registered sellers; that is state-specific guidance, not a nationwide rule. Consult NC State Extension and your own state apiary authority for applicable requirements.

Do not choose a mite treatment or calendar solely from generic advice: the right approach depends on location, current conditions, and local guidance. A class, mentor, association, or extension program can help you develop a region-appropriate monitoring and management plan. UGA Extension emphasizes colony health, Varroa management, and getting bees through winter in its beginner guide.

Set expectations for honey and first-year costs

Do not count on harvesting honey in your first year. UGA Extension advises beginners to focus on building a healthy colony, managing Varroa, and helping the bees survive winter—not on a first-year honey crop. Extraction and storage equipment can wait until a colony has a harvestable surplus; it is not automatically part of the essential starting setup.

Your practical first-year priorities are a legal site, training and local support, compatible equipment, responsibly sourced bees, and a care routine you can maintain through the seasons.
