4 Best Fertilizers for Evergreens: Choose by Plant and Soil Test

Many established evergreens do not need fertilizer. Use a soil test and plant identity to choose a matching nutrient, slow-release nitrogen, pH amendment, or no fertilizer.

The best fertilizer for an evergreen is the one that supplies a nutrient a soil test shows it needs. Many established evergreens need no fertilizer at all. Identify the plant, check the soil, and only then choose among a balanced tree-and-shrub fertilizer, a slow-release nitrogen option, a pH amendment, or no fertilizer.

Do evergreens need fertilizer?

Often, no. University of Maryland Extension advises: “Fertilize evergreens only when it is recommended in a soil test report.” Minnesota Extension also recommends testing soil before buying fertilizer. A plant’s evergreen foliage does not, by itself, show that fertilizer is needed.

Before choosing a product, identify the species and use a soil test to determine nutrient levels and pH. Consider whether nearby lawn fertilization already supplies nutrients to the tree or shrub’s root area. Brown needles alone do not establish a nitrogen deficiency; the available extension guidance does not diagnose an individual plant from that symptom.

Use case What to choose Why and what to check
Soil test confirms a general nutrient deficiency A tree-and-shrub or evergreen fertilizer with an analysis matching the soil-test recommendation. Check the nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium analysis, label rate, and coverage. Use a slow-release form when appropriate, but follow the local test recommendation and product label.
Nitrogen is needed and slow release is appropriate A fertilizer label that clearly states the amount and form of slow-release nitrogen. UMass Extension describes nitrogen as slow-release when water-insoluble nitrogen is at least half of total nitrogen. This label characteristic does not mean nitrogen is needed; the soil-test recommendation determines that.
An identified acid-loving plant has a soil-pH issue A pH amendment or acid-forming fertilizer only if plant identity and soil testing support it. Some hollies and pines are examples of acid-loving plants in Maryland Extension guidance. Do not acidify soil simply because a plant is evergreen.
No test-confirmed need, or only one nutrient is deficient No fertilizer, or a single-nutrient input recommended by the test. A broad “complete” fertilizer can add phosphorus or other nutrients the soil does not need.

Match soil pH to the plant, not the evergreen label

Evergreens do not all prefer the same soil pH. Maryland Extension lists pH 4.5–5.5 for certain acid-loving plants, including some hollies and pines, and pH 6.5–7.2 for boxwood and yew. These ranges apply to the plant groups named in that guidance, not to every evergreen. Repeatedly applying acidifying fertilizer without checking pH can make soil too acidic.

Apply only what the recommendation and label call for

  • Use the rate on the soil-test report and fertilizer label; do not treat a general extension maximum as a target rate.
  • Evergreens have shallow feeder roots, and excess quick-release fertilizer can injure them. Maryland Extension gives a maximum of 2 to 3 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet in its evergreen guidance; that maximum does not replace a soil-test recommendation.
  • Do not fertilize drought-stressed plants. Minnesota Extension warns that fertilizer may burn stressed roots or encourage growth when the plant cannot support it. UNH Extension also cautions against fertilizing during drought unless plants are regularly irrigated.
  • For a newly planted evergreen, prioritize root establishment. Purdue Extension says fertilizer at planting generally does not improve survival and may injure roots; it advises waiting at least a few months, usually until spring of the next growing season. Soil results and site conditions may affect that timing.

How to compare fertilizer labels

Once a soil test identifies a need, compare products on the details that affect whether they fit that recommendation:

  • COVERAGE: This 3 lb. package Miracle-Gro Tree & Shrub Plant Food Spikes includes 12 spikes, enough plant food sticks to feed 3 trees with a 4-ft drip line diameter or 1 tree with a 12-ft. drip line diameter
  • Nutrient analysis: Match nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to the test rather than choosing a product because it is labeled “complete.”
  • Nitrogen form: If slow-release nitrogen is appropriate, check the label for its amount and form. UMass Extension’s criterion is water-insoluble nitrogen equal to at least half of total nitrogen.
  • Species and soil pH: Confirm the plant’s identity and whether its pH needs differ from nearby plants.
  • Rate and coverage: Follow the product’s stated application rate and area coverage alongside the soil-test recommendation.
  • Site conditions: Account for whether the plant is established and adequately watered, and for nutrients that nearby lawn fertilization may contribute.

Extension recommendations can vary with region, soil, species, and climate. Use a local soil-testing service where available and follow the fertilizer label; do not assume a rate intended for one area applies everywhere.
