Skanska has begun building the West Building for Sumner High School in Washington. The district’s September 22, 2026 update said deep piles were installed, foundation work had started and most utility tie-ins were in place. The $114 million Phase 2 project is estimated to finish in Fall 2028; that is a district schedule estimate, not a guaranteed completion date.
What Skanska is building in Phase 2
Sumner-Bonney Lake School District identifies Skanska as the general contractor/construction manager for the high school master plan. Phase 2 is the West Building, designed to expand teaching and student-support space on the campus.
- New classrooms and career and technical education (CTE) labs
- Special Education classrooms
- A new Tiny Sparts childcare space
- A greenhouse
- Additional parking
- Wider hallways intended to improve safety and accessibility
The district’s July 2025 planning account also described a planned 2,400-square-foot robotics lab. Educational specifications for the project ran 175 pages and were approved after five months of meetings, focus groups and input from a 30-person advisory committee. Latest reported construction status
In an update dated September 22, 2026, drawing on the September 21 Bond Oversight Committee meeting, the district reported that all deep piles had been installed, foundations had started and most utility tie-ins had been installed. Grade beams, structural slabs and structural steel were identified as upcoming work. The update described Phase 2 as on schedule and under budget as of that report. District construction update

The construction timeline has included several distinct milestones: the district described visible construction and preparation for structural-pile drilling on August 7, then Sumner High School held a public groundbreaking ceremony on August 25. The dates describe construction activity and the ceremony, respectively.
Budget and estimated completion
The district lists a $114 million budget for Phase 2 and construction spanning 2026–2028, with estimated completion in Fall 2028. The school reiterated Fall 2028 as the anticipated completion at its August 25, 2026 groundbreaking. How Phase 2 fits the wider campus plan
The West Building is one part of a larger Sumner High School master plan that the district lists at $412.2 million. It should not be confused with Phase 3, a separate planned package that includes a performing arts center, gym, pool, band room, fields and tennis courts. The district estimates Phase 3 completion in Fall 2032. Those amenities are not part of the West Building work currently reported underway.
At the August 25 groundbreaking, Sumner High School junior Ali B. described the project as a community investment: “We’re not just here celebrating a building today. It’s bigger than that. It’s about our community, hope, and our future together.”
