Start by identifying your machine’s controller and checking physical fit; “K40” alone does not establish that a board, rotary, or Z table will work with your particular machine.
Start with the bottleneck, not a shopping list
A K40 owner’s upgrade discussion mentions an air-assist head, a chiller, a rotary attachment, and a Z table as possibilities, but those are suggestions rather than a compatibility standard or a measured performance ranking. The discussion is anecdotal; use it to identify upgrade categories, then check the requirements for your exact machine and intended work.
- If you want different control software, inspect the installed controller before buying software or a board.
- If you need airflow at the cutting area, investigate an air-assist head and air supply that fit your machine.
- If you are replacing a basic cooling arrangement, distinguish an optional chiller from the essential need for working water flow.
- If you want to engrave cylindrical objects or reposition workpieces, assess rotary or Z-table clearance and usable travel.
Controller and software: identify the board first
LightBurn says it does not support the M2 Nano controller found in most stock K40 lasers. Its compatibility guidance explains that controller firmware determines whether the software can control the machine, and that the controller type also affects the applicable license class. Check LightBurn’s controller compatibility information before buying a license or replacement board.
Do not assume your machine has a particular controller because it is called a K40. Inspect the actual board, firmware, connectors, and wiring. Then verify software support, signal and wiring compatibility, available accessory outputs, and the work involved in installation. LightBurn names the Cohesion3D LaserBoard among common GCode-controller options, but that is not confirmation that it is a drop-in replacement for every K40. Review the controller guidance against your machine’s configuration.

Air assist: check the whole setup
An air-assist head and supply are common K40 upgrade suggestions, but the available information does not establish a controlled numerical gain in cutting speed or quality. Treat air assist as a possible way to change airflow at the cutting area, not as a guaranteed performance result.
Before choosing hardware, check:
- Whether the head or nozzle mounts to your machine and fits its work area.
- What air source and tubing the setup requires.
- How the machine will start and stop the air supply, including whether its controller has a suitable accessory output.
- Whether the installation affects clearances or access to the workpiece.
Cooling: reliable flow is essential; a chiller is optional
A chiller is one possible replacement for a basic pump-and-reservoir arrangement. It is an upgrade choice, not a substitute for the more fundamental requirement: a functioning cooling loop with verified water flow before the laser tube is fired.

OMTech’s K40+ safety instructions say to activate water cooling and visually confirm flow through the entire system before turning on the laser tube. Its K40+ guidance recommends water at 60–70°F (15–21°C); that range is specific to OMTech’s K40+ instructions, not a universal specification for every K40 or laser tube. Read OMTech’s K40+ operating guidance and follow the requirements for your own machine and tube.
Rotary attachments and Z tables: measure before buying
A rotary attachment is relevant if you want to work on cylindrical objects. A Z table can change workpiece positioning and the available capacity. Neither option is established as a universal fit across K40 revisions.

Check the exact machine’s bed style, enclosure dimensions, available clearance, workpiece dimensions, and usable travel. For a rotary, include the object’s diameter and length in the fit check; for a Z table, confirm that the raised workpiece and table remain within the machine’s usable space. The upgrade discussion suggests these categories but does not establish machine-wide fit specifications.

LightBurn’s troubleshooting guidance notes that devices such as chillers and external air assists sharing a circuit can contribute to a small power drop. It also identifies bonding, grounding, and USB routing as potential factors in static or communication problems. These are troubleshooting considerations, not instructions to modify mains wiring. Do not improvise electrical changes; use appropriately qualified help for work on the machine’s power system.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Controller: Record the installed board and firmware; confirm software, wiring, signal, and license compatibility.
- Cooling: Confirm the required flow and temperature for your specific machine and tube, and decide whether your current cooling loop needs replacement or only monitoring.
- Air assist: Confirm head and nozzle fit, air-source needs, tubing route, and accessory-control options.
- Mechanical capacity: Measure the workpiece, bed, enclosure clearance, and travel needed for a rotary or Z table.
- Electrical setup: Consider shared circuit loads and cable routing when troubleshooting issues; do not undertake unqualified mains work.
The available guidance does not establish current prices, universal fit across K40 revisions, or controlled comparisons of upgrade performance. Choose based on the problem you are solving and verify each component against your machine rather than treating any single upgrade sequence as universal.
