Practitioners call this the “command position.” It is a traditional layout principle, not a proven way to improve sleep, health, or relationships.
What the command position means
The basic idea is to have a clear view of the entrance without placing the bed directly in its path. This combines awareness of the doorway with a position that is not aligned straight toward it. For a construction-minded layout, think of it as balancing sightlines, support behind the bed, and usable circulation space—not as a rule that overrides the room’s dimensions or function.
How to choose a position in your room
- Check the view from the bed. Identify positions from which the sleeper can see the bedroom entrance.
- Avoid the doorway’s direct line. Among positions with a view of the door, prefer one where the bed is not directly aligned with it.
- Look for a solid wall behind the head. A wall is the commonly preferred support for the head of the bed.
- Check windows, mirrors, and circulation. Note whether a window or mirror affects the layout, and make sure the chosen position leaves practical movement space.
- Choose the most workable compromise. If no position satisfies every preference, decide which constraint matters most in your room; the cited guidance does not establish one universal ranking for every conflict.
When the preferred layout is not possible
If the bed is directly aligned with the door
Feng shui sources commonly advise against this alignment. If the bed cannot be moved, a practitioner quoted by Livingetc suggests a high footboard, bench, folding screen, or heavy curtain as a possible buffer. These are optional ways to address the layout constraint, not requirements.
If the head of the bed is under a window
A solid wall behind the headboard is preferred in the cited guidance. If the window-side position is unavoidable, a solid headboard is one suggested compromise; it does not make the room match the preferred arrangement.
If the room is small or has limited layout options
Use the position that functions best in the actual room. A screen or headboard is worth considering only if it addresses a specific issue, such as direct alignment with the doorway or a lack of support behind the bed. Avoid sacrificing necessary circulation space to achieve a theoretical ideal.
How to handle a mirror
Guidance is not consistent: some sources recommend avoiding a mirror that reflects the bed, while another suggests a mirror as a way to see the door. If both concerns apply, a practical compromise is to move or angle the mirror so it helps with the doorway sightline without reflecting the sleeper, if the room permits. These are feng shui layout preferences, not established requirements for sleep or safety.

Practitioners describe the command position in terms of awareness and a sense of support. Rosanna Deflorian, founder of More Than Intuition, told Livingetc on August 29, 2026, that she advises clients not to place the bed facing the door, referring to it as the “death position” in feng shui. That is her practitioner view, not a scientific finding. The cited material does not demonstrate that a particular bed position causes better sleep, health, fertility, or relationship outcomes.
