For many everyday baking jobs, start with the center rack. Move higher when you want faster browning on top or are broiling; choose a lower position for stronger bottom heat, a crust, or room for a large roast. Treat these as starting points: your recipe and oven manual take priority because rack numbers and heating patterns vary by model and cooking mode.
Why rack position changes the result
Rack height changes how close food sits to the heating elements and how heat and air move around it. A higher rack can expose food to more direct heat from the top element; a lower rack can favor browning on the underside. The effect depends on the oven and the selected mode, so a rack position is a useful adjustment—not a guaranteed fix. Whirlpool’s rack-placement guide explains these placement factors.
Which oven rack should you use?
Use this as a general guide when a recipe does not specify a position. Follow the recipe unless your oven manual gives an appliance-specific direction.

Whirlpool’s general guidance recommends the center for many baked goods and casseroles, while GE notes that rack positions are designed for specific uses and vary by model. Whirlpool’s guide and GE Appliances’ rack-position guidance both support checking the instructions for your particular oven.

Use the oven manual for numbered positions and special modes
Rack numbers are not universal. For example, Whirlpool’s 2025 control guide assigns different numbered positions to different tasks on the models it covers, including rack 4 for broiling and its air-fry basket. A separate 2022 Whirlpool guide gives its own model-specific rack instructions, including positions for broiling. Those numbers should not be applied to other ovens.
- Broil: Follow the exact oven’s broiling instructions. A Whirlpool control guide recommends a broiler pan and grid to drain juices and help reduce spatter and smoke.
- Convection: Fan circulation changes heat distribution. Check your model’s convection chart rather than automatically using a conventional-oven rack position.
- Air fry: Use the specified basket and rack position only on an oven with that feature. Whirlpool’s 2025 guide directs the compatible air-fry basket to rack 4 and cautions against using more than one basket.
How to arrange pans on more than one rack
Air needs room to circulate around bakeware for more even cooking. Follow your manual’s rack-pair recommendations, leave clearance around pans, and stagger them when instructed instead of putting one directly above another. Whirlpool’s 2022 guide specifies 2 inches (5 cm) of clearance around bakeware for the models it covers; its 2025 guide says not to place bakeware directly over another piece. Whirlpool also advises distributing multiple racks evenly for airflow. Avoid lining a rack or the oven bottom with foil if the manual warns against it: covering those areas can block airflow. See Whirlpool’s baking-performance guidance.
Adjust rack height when browning is uneven
- If the top browns too quickly, try a lower position so the food is farther from the top heat.
- If the bottom overbrowns, try moving the food higher.
- If the change does not help, check the recipe, bakeware guidance, and oven manual; rack position alone may not explain the result.
Replacing a damaged or missing rack
Oven racks are not necessarily interchangeable. Use the appliance model number or the rack part number to identify a compatible replacement, as Whirlpool’s guide to oven racks advises.
