29 Common Houseplants That Are Popular for Good Reason

From sculptural fiddle-leaf figs to trailing pothos, these 29 popular houseplants suit different homes and tastes. Choose by light, space, watering needs, and verified plant identity.

Popular houseplants earn their place in a home for different reasons: striking foliage, a trailing habit, flowers, or a tolerance for less-than-perfect routines. The best choice is the one that suits the light, humidity, space, and care you can provide—not simply the plant with the most appealing leaves.

Below are 29 familiar options, with practical ways to think about choosing among them. The list and quoted expert comments are reproduced from Madeline Buiano’s article, updated May 12, 2025, on Wendy’s Flowers, which links the author to Martha Stewart; that page is a reproduction, not verification of a canonical Martha Stewart URL.

How to choose a houseplant that will suit your home

Start with the conditions you actually have. Light can vary substantially from one room to another, while humidity and temperature may change near windows, radiators, and drafts. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends researching a plant’s preferred light and positioning it accordingly. “Low light” does not mean no light: many plants struggle when placed far from windows, and ordinary domestic lighting generally is not enough to grow them. A grow lamp can supplement daylight when necessary, but it is not a default requirement.

  • Match light to the plant. Note whether a location receives direct sun, bright indirect light, or relatively little daylight. Strong summer sun through glass can scorch plants that are susceptible to it.
  • Consider your watering routine. Succulents store water; many tropical plants have different needs. Choose a plant whose requirements fit your habits instead of applying one schedule to every pot.
  • Allow room to grow. Upright, tree-like plants need different space from trailing vines or compact rosettes. Check the individual plant’s mature size and growth habit before placing it.
  • Check pet safety by exact name. Do not assume any plant on this list is safe for animals. The ASPCA database is not exhaustive, so confirm the precise plant entry and contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control if a pet may have eaten a concerning plant.

For further guidance, see the RHS pages on choosing houseplants and growing houseplants, and the ASPCA’s Toxic and Non-Toxic Plants database.

29 popular houseplants, and what makes each distinctive

These plants are popular for varied reasons, but the list is not a ranking of easiest plants or a guarantee that every option will thrive in every home. The botanical labels below follow the names used in the source article; common names and plant identities can vary, so confirm the exact species or cultivar when buying or researching care.

  1. Fiddle-leaf fig (Ficus lyrata). A tree-like focal point with large, sculptural leaves. Andrew Bunting, vice president of horticulture at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, describes its “uniquely shaped leaves and upright stature” as giving it a strong decorative impact. Make sure the room can provide the light and space it needs.
  2. Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata). Its firm, upright leaves give it a distinctive architectural look. It is a popular choice, but its care still needs to match the light and conditions in its location.
  3. Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum). Recognizable for its arching foliage and a flowing shape that works well on a shelf or plant stand.
  4. Wax plant (Hoya spp.). A group of plants valued for their waxy-looking leaves and trailing growth. The genus includes different species, so identify the specific plant before relying on a care guide.
  5. Monstera (Monstera deliciosa). Its large, distinctive leaves make it a popular foliage plant. Leave room for its growth rather than treating it as a small tabletop plant indefinitely.
  6. ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia). A distinctive foliage plant valued for its durability. Horticulturist Justin Hancock of Costa Farms calls it “very durable” and notes that it looks different from most plants.
  7. Pothos (Epipremnum sp.). A familiar trailing plant that can be displayed from a hanging planter or allowed to cascade from a shelf. The source gives the genus rather than a specific species.
  8. Tree philodendron (Philodendron selloum, as named in the source article). A larger, upright foliage choice with a more substantial presence than a trailing philodendron. Confirm the plant’s identity, since botanical naming can change.
  9. Heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum). Its heart-shaped leaves and trailing habit make it suitable for a hanging planter or elevated shelf.
  10. Aloe. A familiar succulent form with fleshy leaves. Since “aloe” can refer to multiple plants, check the exact identity and its care requirements.
  11. Jade plant (Crassula ovata). A succulent with a compact, branching, shrub-like shape. Its water-storing growth is a reminder that it should not automatically receive the same watering routine as a tropical foliage plant.
  12. Rubber plant (Ficus elastica). A bold foliage plant with broad leaves and an upright, tree-like habit that can make a room feel more furnished.
  13. Prayer plant (Calathea sp., as named in the source article). Known for patterned foliage. The source uses a genus-level label, so check which plant you have before following species-specific instructions.
  14. Air plant (Tillandsia sp.). A plant that can be displayed without a conventional soil-filled pot. Its unusual presentation does not remove the need to learn the care requirements for its particular species.
  15. Peace lily (Spathiphyllum sp.). A familiar foliage plant that can flower indoors. Its genus-level name is not enough to determine all care or pet-safety details; verify the exact plant.
  16. String of pearls (Senecio rowleyanus). A trailing succulent with bead-like leaves, especially suited to a spot where its stems can hang freely.
  17. African violet (Saintpaulia ionantha). A compact flowering houseplant for readers who want blooms as well as foliage.
  18. Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema modestum, as named in the source article). A foliage plant included among familiar indoor choices. Confirm the exact species or cultivar because common names may cover multiple plants.
  19. Ivy (Hedera spp.). A trailing or climbing plant that can bring a leafy shape to a shelf or support. “Ivy” includes multiple species, so use a plant-specific care reference.
  20. Money tree (Pachira aquatica). A tree-like indoor plant that can serve as a substantial floor-level feature when space allows.
  21. Croton (Codiaeum variegatum). Chosen for colorful foliage rather than flowers. Place it according to its light requirements, not just the color that caught your eye at the shop.
  22. Anthurium (Anthurium andraeanum). A flowering plant with a distinctive, decorative appearance. Confirm its specific growing and pet-safety information before choosing it for a home with animals.
  23. Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana). A popular indoor plant with upright stems and a compact display form. Check the identity and care instructions rather than assuming its common name means it is a true bamboo.
  24. Ponytail palm (Beaucarnea recurvata). A sculptural plant with a swollen base and a fountain of narrow leaves. Its distinctive form works well as a standalone accent.
  25. Chinese money plant (Pilea peperomioides). A compact plant with round leaves on upright stems, often chosen for its clear, graphic silhouette.
  26. Majesty palm (Ravenea rivularis). A palm with a distinctly tropical look. Consider the space, light, and humidity available before bringing one home.
  27. Gardenia. Included for its flowering appeal. Because the source does not specify a species, check the plant label and its particular indoor growing requirements.
  28. Aluminum plant (Pilea cadierei). A foliage plant valued for the contrasting markings on its leaves.
  29. Cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior). A familiar foliage plant with a strong reputation for durability. As with any plant, that reputation does not make it suited to every location or every care routine.

Water and position plants according to their needs

There is no single watering calendar that fits all 29 plants. The RHS advises checking whether the pot needs water, watering thoroughly so excess can escape through the drainage hole, and emptying any water left in the saucer. Leaving a pot standing in water can create problems; do not water just because a fixed day has arrived.

Room conditions matter too. A radiator can dehydrate leaves, and humidity and temperature differ across a home. Grouping plants with similar watering needs can make care easier, as suggested by Washington State University Extension’s King County Master Gardener tip sheet, but it does not replace checking each pot and plant. That guide is regional extension advice, not a universal care standard for every home.

Choose compost for the individual plant rather than assuming one mix suits every species. The RHS describes peat-free composts made from several possible ingredients and recommends buying nursery-propagated plants from reputable garden centres. Its growing advice also emphasizes matching position and light to a plant’s requirements.

Check plant identity and pet safety before buying

Common names are not always precise: several entries in this list name a genus rather than a specific species, and a familiar label may encompass plants with different needs. Keep the nursery label, confirm the botanical name, and use that name when looking up care and toxicity information.

The ASPCA states that its plant list covers frequently encountered plants and is not all-inclusive. It also notes that any plant material can cause gastrointestinal upset. Check the exact plant in its database; if an animal is ill or may have ingested a concerning plant, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control. Do not treat this 29-plant list as a pet-safety guide.
