Take unusable household gasoline to a local household hazardous waste (HHW) collection program or regional collection center. Call or check the program before moving it: acceptance, hours, appointment rules, quantity limits, approved containers, and container-return policies vary by location. Old gasoline is still a dangerous flammable liquid, not ordinary rubbish.
Where to take old gasoline
Contact your city or county solid waste office, environmental agency, or HHW program to find a permanent drop-off site, scheduled collection event, or regional collection center. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises households to check with local environmental, health, or solid waste agencies for HHW options: EPA household hazardous waste guidance.
Confirm that the site accepts gasoline specifically. Tell staff if the fuel is mixed with oil, water, or another fuel, or if its container is damaged. Iowa’s Department of Natural Resources directs residents to regional collection centers for old gasoline mixtures, but that does not mean every facility accepts every mixture: Iowa DNR guidance on gasoline disposal.
Questions to ask before you go
- Does the site accept gasoline, including this particular mixture, if applicable?
- Do I need an appointment, and what are the drop-off hours or event dates?
- What quantity limits and container requirements apply?
- Should I bring a leaking or damaged container, or follow separate instructions?
- Will the site return the container, or keep it?
Rules can be specific to a local program. For example, King County, Washington, requires fuel to be brought in an approved safety can labeled “gasoline”; its limit is five gallons or less per container and 25 gallons or less total per trip. Those limits apply to King County, not as a nationwide standard: King County gasoline and fuel disposal requirements.

#1 Best Overall
- Fits Your Needs - Type I safety cans have a single opening for filling and pouring fluids. They are used to safely store, transport, and dispense flammable liquids.
- Easy to Use - Comes with a funnel to help with filling and pouring. The gasketed spout cap self-closes to prevent leaks or spills, and the cap assembly opens automatically to vent internal vapors
- Safe - Features a fixed handle, double interlock no-weld bottom seam, and a non-sparking flame arrestor that helps prevent liquid inside the can from igniting and keeps flames from spreading
- Compliant - Meets OSHA Standard 1910.106 and NFPA code 30 requirements, FM, UL and ULC approved; lead-free technology featuring environmentally friendly hot dipped 24-gauge galvanized steel
- Made in America - US-Made from galvanized steel which resists rust, dents, and certain chemicals. Has a baked on powder-coat finish that resists scratches, chipping, fading, and other wear
How to keep gasoline contained before drop-off
- If it is safe to do so, leave the fuel in a suitable, labeled fuel container. Keep it away from ignition sources and do not bring it indoors to transfer it.
- Do not mix gasoline with other products. EPA warns that mixing HHW can trigger reactions, fires, or explosions.
- Follow the receiving program’s transport instructions, including any rules about the type and size of container.
- If the container is corroding or leaking, ask the local hazardous materials official or fire department how to proceed rather than moving it without guidance.
A gasoline safety can may be necessary if the local program requires one, but check its rules before obtaining or using a container.
What not to do with old gasoline
Never pour gasoline down a drain, onto soil, into a storm drain, or into ordinary trash. Indiana’s Department of Environmental Management states: “Never pour gasoline down the drain, on the ground, or in the trash.” Its guidance directs unusable gasoline to an HHW collection program: Indiana IDEM household hazardous waste guidance. EPA also warns against disposing of HHW down drains, on the ground, into storm sewers, or in some cases in ordinary trash; improper disposal can pollute the environment and threaten health.

- INDUSTRIAL-GRADE DURABILITY: Constructed from galvanized steel with a chemical-resistant powder-coat finish, this metal gas can is pressure-tested for reliability and built for repeated use in demanding industrial and commercial environments
- PRECISION POURING CONTROL: This gas safety can features a flexible metal hose that directs fuel into smaller openings with greater accuracy. The ergonomic lift lever also makes refilling faster and more convenient
- ENHANCED FIRE PROTECTION: A stainless steel flame arrester helps reduce flashback ignition risk during flammable liquid handling. The self-closing, leak-tight lid of this metal fuel safety can supports safer storage
- INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED CERTIFICATIONS: This industrial gas can is FM Approved, UL/ULC Listed, and TÜV Certified. It is designed to support compliance with OSHA and NFPA requirements for flammable liquid handling
Do not try to solve the problem by burning, evaporating, absorbing, diluting, or pouring the fuel into a vehicle. Those are not universal disposal methods, and the right handling depends on the fuel, container, and local instructions.
What to do if gasoline spills or the container leaks
Do not attempt cleanup beyond your ability. If you cannot control a spill, or are unsure about cleanup and disposal, contact the fire department. The U.S. Fire Administration gives that direction in its home hazardous materials guidance.

Why expired gasoline still needs careful handling
Gasoline remains highly flammable and extremely toxic even when it is old or unusable. Its age does not make it safe for casual disposal. Treat it as hazardous household material and use the collection route confirmed by your local program.
