These nine familiar garden tulip types flower in a rough sequence from early to late spring, making it possible to plan a display that unfolds over several weeks. “Most common” here is a practical selection, not a measured popularity ranking: the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) recognises 15 cultivated tulip classifications, but its material does not rank them by sales or how often gardeners plant them. Bloom timing also varies with cultivar, location and seasonal weather.

When do tulips bloom?

Tulip flowering is best understood as an early-to-late spring sequence, rather than a calendar of fixed dates. Early types open first, midseason groups follow, and several distinctive forms flower later. A particular cultivar may bloom earlier or later depending on local conditions. In the RHS Wisley 2025 trial, some cultivars flowered for only a few days while others remained in flower for weeks; that observation describes one trial season in Surrey, England, not a guarantee for other gardens. RHS Wisley’s 2025 Double Late, Parrot and Coronet trial explains the variation.

The RHS has reported trials spanning multiple tulip groups: its 2026 Wisley trial assessed 100 entries across Darwin Hybrid, Single Late, Viridiflora and multi-headed groups, with 29 receiving an RHS Award of Garden Merit. Those figures describe trial entries and awards, not the prevalence of those types in gardens. See the RHS 2026 trial report.

Use these windows to plan relative succession, not to predict an exact flowering date. Flower shape is often the quickest way to tell the later specialist types apart.

1. Single Early: early spring

Single Early tulips have one simple, cup-shaped flower on each stem. They provide a classic, uncluttered start to the tulip season.

2. Double Early: early spring

Double Early tulips have fuller, layered blooms with a bowl-like appearance. Their many petals give an early display a softer, more abundant look than a single cup.

3. Triumph: midseason

Triumph tulips have the familiar single-cup form and come in a broad range of cultivars. Their midseason flowering makes them a useful bridge between early and later types.

4. Darwin Hybrid: mid to late spring

Darwin Hybrids are known for large, goblet-shaped flowers and sturdy stems. The RHS describes them as bold garden performers. They can be a useful choice where a substantial mid- to late-season flower is wanted; the group is also among those the RHS identifies as more likely to flower again in later years than many modern border tulips. 5. Single Late: late spring

Single Late tulips have a single, egg-shaped flower, often carried on a taller stem. Their later timing suits a late-spring border or cutting garden. The RHS included this group in its 2026 trial alongside Darwin Hybrid, Viridiflora and multi-headed tulips. RHS Single Late trial report.

6. Double Late: late spring

Double Late tulips have large, layered flowers that can resemble peonies. Their lush form makes them visually distinct from single-flowered types. In the RHS’s 2025 Wisley trial, 43 of the 80 selections were Double Late tulips; the trial total is not a measure of how common the group is in home gardens. RHS Double Late trial report.

Lily-flowered tulips are identified by narrow, pointed petals that curve, or reflex, outward to create a lily-like outline. The RHS’s 2024 Wisley trial included 43 Lily-flowered cultivars among 80 selections. RHS Lily-flowered and Fringed trial report.

8. Fringed: late spring

Fringed tulips have fine, cut edges along their petals. The fringe can be subtle or more pronounced, adding texture to the flower’s outline. The RHS’s 2024 trial assessed 37 Fringed cultivars alongside 43 Lily-flowered tulips. RHS trial report.

How to plan a longer tulip display

Choose cultivars from more than one flowering window and arrange them so later groups can take over as early flowers fade. The RHS notes that different divisions flower at different times, allowing gardeners to plan a succession from early to late spring. Because timing and flower duration vary among cultivars and seasons, treat group labels as a guide rather than a dated schedule.

For a stronger display, choose firm bulbs without visible mould and plant them in a sunny, free-draining spot, following the bulb supplier’s planting depth and spacing guidance. The RHS says border tulips are sold as dry bulbs in autumn. Its 2026 Wisley report identifies November as the best planting time in the UK context; that timing should not be applied automatically to other climates. RHS tulip growing guide and RHS 2026 trial report.

Will tulips flower again next year?

Many modern border tulips flower less reliably in later years, so gardeners often treat them as seasonal bulbs and replace them for a dependable display. Repeat flowering is not equally likely across groups: the RHS identifies Darwin Hybrids and Kaufmanniana cultivars as more likely to flower again, while some specialist types may naturalise. Results depend on the cultivar and growing conditions, so no group guarantees a repeat display. RHS tulip growing guide.
