Researchers are developing asphalt that could help stop some small cracks from growing: tiny plant-derived porous spores carry recycled oils and are designed to release them as the material fractures. In a laboratory experiment, the material healed a surface microcrack in less than an hour. That is an early-stage result—not evidence that potholes repair themselves or that the material has been tested on working roads.
How the proposed asphalt is meant to heal
Asphalt relies on bitumen as its binder. Bitumen hardens through oxidation, and that change contributes to cracking over time. The processes are complex and not fully understood. The approach being investigated by researchers at King’s College London and Swansea University, with collaborators in Chile, embeds porous spores derived from plants and filled with recycled oils in the asphalt. When cracking begins, the spores are intended to release the oils, helping restore the binder and stitch small cracks.
Dr Francisco Martin-Martinez, Senior Lecturer in Chemistry and Natural Sciences at King’s College London, described the aim as seeking to “mimic the healing properties observed in nature.” The reported laboratory result was healing of a surface microcrack in under an hour. It does not show that a pothole, which involves damage beyond a surface microcrack, would close by itself.
What AI contributed—and what it did not
Machine learning helped the team study organic molecules in bitumen and advance computational investigation of oxidation and crack formation. Google Cloud describes research support using cloud and AI tools, including Gemini and Vertex AI. AI supported the research; it is not a system built into the asphalt that detects and repairs road damage.

Why the research matters to road maintenance
The scale of the maintenance challenge is clear in the Asphalt Industry Alliance’s ALARM 2024 survey of local-authority roads in England and Wales. Its findings primarily cover financial year 2023/24, and 72% of the authorities responsible for local roads responded.
- The survey reported that 2 million potholes were filled over the preceding year—about one every 16 seconds.
- It estimated a one-time £16.3 billion catch-up cost to bring the carriageway network to a condition that would allow cost-effective proactive asset management. This is a broad backlog estimate, not a saving established for the experimental asphalt.
- It classified 47% of local road miles as being in good structural condition; separately, more than 107,000 miles had less than 15 years of structural life remaining.
King’s College London’s February 2025 account presented the ALARM survey as estimating annual pothole-filling costs at £143.5 million. That figure is distinct from the survey’s wider £16.3 billion catch-up estimate. These statistics explain the interest in preventing damage, but they do not establish that the new material would reduce repair costs.

What other self-healing asphalt studies show
Self-healing pavement research includes different materials and mechanisms, so results from one system should not be treated as evidence for another. A separate 2025 peer-reviewed study, summarized by TU Delft, tested four approaches in stone mastic asphalt (SMA): alginate capsules, conductive alginate capsules, induction heating, and a hybrid capsule-plus-induction system.

These were laboratory bending-healing tests on the study’s SMA mixtures. They are not tests of the plant-spore and recycled-oil material, and the results do not establish road performance.

A separate European Commission project, SHARP, ran from 2015 to 2016 and used sodium alginate fibres to deliver rejuvenator. Its final report said the system performed well for small damage but was limited for large cracks and full failure. The report’s 2017 update said transfer from laboratory to site had not been achieved at that point; it proposed combining rejuvenator delivery with induction heating. That history illustrates why a promising lab mechanism still needs to prove itself at road scale.

King’s College London said on 3 February 2025 that the innovation remained in development and had yet to be published. The available reports do not establish field deployment or commercial availability for this specific material. Nor do they establish how it would perform under repeated traffic loading and changing weather, how many times it could heal, how it would be manufactured at scale, or what it would cost.

The use of plant-derived spores and recycled oils is presented as a sustainability aim, but quantified lifecycle emissions or environmental savings have not been established. Until larger-scale testing answers these questions, the credible promise is narrower: the material could help limit early crack growth, potentially reducing the chance that some damage worsens. It is not yet a demonstrated solution for potholes or routine road maintenance.
