1. Choose plants for your home’s light and group compatible plants
Start with the conditions you have rather than trying to make every room suit every plant. UF/IFAS identifies light as the most important consideration for indoor gardens, noting that natural light can be scarce in many homes. A plant that fits the available light may be easier to care for than one that needs a brighter location. See UF/IFAS guidance on indoor gardens.
When placing several plants together, group those with similar light, soil, and watering needs. That makes it easier to check them as a group without assuming they all need identical care. If a plant repeatedly struggles in its spot, consider moving it or choosing a better-matched species rather than compensating with frequent interventions.
2. Check the soil instead of watering by calendar
There is no universal houseplant watering schedule. Water needs vary with the plant, potting mix, container, light, temperature, and humidity, so a weekly reminder can prompt watering when the soil is still wet—or leave a plant dry when it needs water sooner. University of Maryland Extension recommends checking soil and conditions rather than relying on a fixed interval: Watering Indoor Plants.

For many plants, a practical starting check is to feel about two inches into the soil. That depth is not appropriate for every plant: cacti and succulents are exceptions to the general guidance, and the right dryness threshold depends on the plant. Iowa State Extension also describes using soil color, pot weight, a finger touch, or an optional moisture meter as indicators. When watering is needed, water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom of the pot. Use a saucer or other setup that lets excess water drain away rather than leaving the pot standing in it. 3. Use a wick-reservoir planter only for plants that like steady moisture
A self-watering planter with a wick can reduce how often you need to water, provided the plant suits consistently moist soil. A reservoir below the potting mix supplies water through a wick, drawing moisture upward. Virginia Cooperative Extension explains: “These containers are designed to keep the potting soil evenly moist over time.” Its guidance, Properly Watering Container Houseplants, says this setup works for most houseplants but not those that prefer drier soil.

Before choosing this approach, consider the plant’s moisture preference, how many pots you are managing, the reservoir’s capacity, and whether you can inspect and refill it. The reservoir still needs regular checking and periodic cleaning to reduce algae or waterborne disease risk. A wick is a convenience, not a maintenance-free system.
4. Supplement light only when natural light falls short
If the available daylight does not meet a plant’s needs, a plant light can help. UF/IFAS notes that plants use red and blue wavelengths and recommends running lights during daytime, keeping the fixture at an appropriate distance, and keeping it clean. See UF/IFAS Houseplant Care.

There is no safe universal distance or daily duration to apply to every fixture and plant. Check the light manufacturer’s directions and account for the plant’s needs, the area to be covered, fixture placement, and the daylight already available. A grow light is useful when light is the limiting condition; it is not a substitute for matching the plant to its environment.
5. Raise humidity selectively, and keep pots out of standing water
Dry indoor air can increase water loss for some plants, but not every houseplant needs extra humidity. When a plant and room conditions warrant it, possible approaches include a humidifier or grouping compatible plants. Virginia Cooperative Extension and Illinois Extension discuss these options; Illinois Extension cautions against letting pots sit directly in tray water. Misting is temporary, has to be repeated, and does not replace watering. It is also not suitable for every plant. Choose a humidity approach based on whether the plant needs more humidity, how large an area you are trying to affect, and whether water can be kept away from the pot base.

For a short trip, a compatible wick or self-watering container may help maintain moisture. UF/IFAS also discusses automated watering, but any setup can fail or prove unsuitable for a particular plant. If practical, arrange for someone to check indoor plants every few days.
