To protect the exposed end grain at the bottom of an outdoor furniture leg, set the clean, dry leg end in a shallow container of the finish you plan to use. Let it soak for a few hours, then wipe away excess and let the finish dry as directed on its label. This simple method, described by WOOD Magazine, uses the end grain’s natural absorption to carry finish into the exposed fibers.

Why treat the bottoms of outdoor furniture legs?

End grain is exposed where a wooden leg is cut across the fibers. At the bottom of a chair or table leg, that surface can take up water from a wet deck or patio. Giving it extra protection is sensible, though it does not replace an appropriate exterior finish and maintenance for the rest of the furniture.

Seal the end grain with the finish you plan to use

  1. Make sure the leg ends are clean and dry. Do not trap water or dampness beneath the finish.
  2. Pour a small amount of the finish you intend to use into a shallow container, such as a disposable paper bowl.
  3. Set one leg end in the container and let the end grain absorb the finish for a few hours.
  4. Turn the furniture upright, wipe off excess finish, and let it dry according to the product label.

This is a targeted treatment for the leg ends, not a substitute for finishing and maintaining all exposed outdoor wood.

When to use exterior epoxy instead

If you want a separate end-grain sealing step before applying the furniture’s overall finish, woodworking guidance recommends exterior epoxy. Rockler advises choosing a slow-curing product rather than quick-set five-minute epoxy. Its method is to start with clean end grain, sand with coarse 80-grit paper, work epoxy into the pores, let it soak briefly, remove excess, and allow it to cure fully before finishing. Keep the epoxy on the end grain; masking the adjacent sides can help. Follow the selected product’s mixing, application, and cure instructions. Rockler describes an overnight cure as typical for its method, but the product label controls.

Choose the method that suits your finishing plan

Approach Best fit Process
Soak in the planned finish You are already finishing the furniture and want to treat the leg ends with that finish. Soak each clean, dry end in a shallow container for a few hours, wipe off excess, and dry as the label directs.
Separate exterior epoxy seal You want a dedicated end-grain barrier before applying the rest of the finish. Prepare the end grain, apply slow-curing exterior epoxy in a controlled way, remove excess, and let it cure as the product label directs.

The available guidance does not establish one universally best option for every wood species, existing coating, or climate. Check that the products suit your wood and finishing system.

Limit water exposure as well

Keep furniture feet out of standing water where practical, and maintain the exterior finish on the whole piece. Fine Woodworking describes epoxy foot pads as another way to address water wicking at outdoor furniture feet, but the cited guidance does not quantify rot reduction or promise a particular service life.
