Choose the Fellow Atmos if you want a lid that pumps air out, or the Airscape Classic if you prefer a plunger that displaces air as you press it down. Both offer defined capacity options, but the available manufacturer information does not establish which keeps coffee fresh longer. This is a specifications-based comparison, not a report of hands-on testing.
How the two canisters manage air
| Canister | How it works | What that means in use |
|---|---|---|
| Fellow Atmos Vacuum Canister | Fellow says twisting the lid operates a mechanism that pumps air out and maintains a vacuum seal. Fellow also offers an electric-lid version. | You operate the lid to remove air; Fellow recommends retwisting every 4–5 days to maintain the vacuum. |
| Planetary Design Airscape Classic | Planetary Design says its inner plunger pushes air out through a valve as you press the lid down. | The plunger descends toward the beans, reducing the air left in the canister without a lid-integrated vacuum pump. |
Both are designed to manage air, but “vacuum” and “air-displacing” describe different mechanisms. These descriptions and performance language come from the manufacturers; they are not independent freshness-test results.
Capacity: choose for your usual bag size
Capacity depends on the bean roast and how much coffee you buy at a time. Fellow’s listed capacities are for light- to medium-roast beans; the company cautions that dark roast may not fill its largest canister to a full pound.
| Model or size | Manufacturer-listed coffee capacity |
|---|---|
| Fellow Atmos, 0.4 L | Up to 6 oz |
| Fellow Atmos, 0.7 L | Up to 11 oz |
| Fellow Atmos, 1.2 L | Up to 16 oz of light- or medium-roast beans |
| Airscape Classic, smaller size | 250 g / half pound |
| Airscape Classic, larger size | 500 g / one pound |
For a typical 12-ounce bag, Fellow’s 0.7 L option is listed for up to 11 ounces, so it may not hold the entire bag; its 1.2 L size is listed for up to 16 ounces of light- or medium-roast beans. Airscape’s one-pound size has a higher stated weight capacity, though roast and bean volume can affect fit.

Beans, grounds, and upkeep
Fellow Atmos
- Fellow recommends storing whole beans only. It says grounds can clog the intake valve.
- To maintain the vacuum, Fellow recommends retwisting the lid every 4–5 days.
- Fellow says the canister is not dishwasher safe.
Airscape Classic
- Planetary Design says the canister can store ground coffee.
- The manufacturer says whole beans stay fresh longer than grounds regardless of storage method. This is manufacturer guidance, not a controlled comparison of the two canisters.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose Fellow Atmos if you want an active vacuum mechanism and canister sizes listed from 6 to 16 ounces. Consider whether the whole-bean-only guidance and periodic retwisting suit your routine.
- Choose Airscape Classic if you prefer a manually pressed plunger, want a stated half-pound or one-pound size, or need a canister the manufacturer says can also store grounds.
There is not enough independent freshness evidence here to name a freshness winner. The practical choice is the mechanism and capacity that fit your coffee and routine.
What this comparison can—and cannot—establish
The available product information supports a comparison of mechanism, listed capacity, and manufacturer care guidance. It does not provide an independently verified freshness test, a common test protocol, or evidence that one canister outperforms the other over a defined period. Inventory and product variants can change, so confirm the current size and lid option with the manufacturer before buying.
