If clean water has soaked a carpet you need to keep, extract the water immediately, lift the carpet and pad so they can dry on both sides, and dry the exposed floor underneath. Use fans to move air and a dehumidifier to lower room humidity. Treat 24–48 hours as an urgent drying target—not a guarantee that the carpet can be saved.
Check the water source and make the area safe
This procedure is for clean-water damage, such as a supply-line leak. Floodwater may contain sewage or chemicals, so drying alone cannot establish that contaminated carpet is safe. If the water source is uncertain or contamination is possible, stop and contact a qualified restoration professional.
Wet electrical equipment and standing water can create a shock hazard. Do not touch wet equipment or enter standing water around it. If you can do so safely, shut off power to the affected area before cleanup. If the work is unsafe or the affected area is extensive, get professional help.
Dry the carpet, pad, and floor beneath it

Stop the leak and extract standing water
Fix or shut off the water source if it is safe to do so. Remove pooled water with a wet-capable water-extraction or wet-dry vacuum. An ordinary dry vacuum is not designed to collect water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends water extraction for wet carpet and backing.

Lift the carpet and pad
Pull the carpet and pad back far enough to expose the floor underneath. The EPA’s carpet procedure calls for lifting both; drying only the visible carpet surface can leave moisture trapped in the pad, backing, or subfloor.

Dry every exposed layer
Use fans or an air mover to circulate air over the carpet, backing, pad, and exposed floor. Run a dehumidifier to reduce room humidity. These tools have different jobs: extraction removes water, airflow helps wet materials dry, and a dehumidifier removes moisture from the air. None replaces lifting the layers and checking below them.

Check before putting the carpet back
Keep the layers exposed while they dry, and check the underside of the carpet, pad, and floor rather than relying on a dry-feeling surface. The EPA advises drying carpet and backing within 24–48 hours where possible. Its guidance does not give one moisture reading or salvage threshold that applies to every carpet and subfloor, so do not reinstall while any layer remains damp or there are signs of water damage or mold.
What the 24–48-hour target means
The EPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise drying wet materials within 24–48 hours where possible to reduce the chance of mold growth. This is a rapid-drying target, not a universal carpet-replacement deadline: the guidance does not say that every carpet wet for more than 48 hours must be replaced, or that drying within that window guarantees it can be saved. EPA advises assuming mold growth may have occurred if a flooded home and its contents could not be dried in that period.

When to stop DIY cleanup
- Contaminated or uncertain water: Floodwater can carry sewage or chemicals. Do not assume the carpet is safe because it has dried.
- Visible mold: EPA’s flood-cleanup infographic advises against using fans when visible mold is present, because they may spread it. Seek qualified help instead.
- Moisture that remains trapped: If you cannot lift the carpet and pad, expose the floor, or dry the concealed layers promptly, a surface-only effort may not resolve the damage.
- Extensive damage or health concerns: Contact a qualified restoration professional when the affected area is large, cleanup is difficult or unsafe, or an occupant has health concerns. CDC recommends protective equipment for disaster-related mold cleanup and says flood-wet items that cannot be cleaned and dried completely within 24–48 hours should be taken outside.
Do not mix cleaning products. CDC warns against mixing bleach with ammonia or other cleaners.
