For a suitable, nonstructural repair, good results with 3M Bondo Original Filler depend on clean bare metal, accurately measured hardener, and working quickly. 3M gives the mixed filler a 3–4 minute working time, so prepare the surface and tools before mixing. These steps follow 3M’s US directions; check the current product label and product page for the directions supplied with your container.
Check that Original Filler suits the repair
Bondo Original Filler is not a universal solution for every hole, rust problem, substrate, or damaged part. Use it only where the product directions and the repair itself make it suitable; do not treat ordinary filler as a structural repair. 3M says rust must be completely removed before filler is applied. Filler does not stop active rust.
3M’s Bondo FAQ describes application to bare, sanded metal or over automotive epoxy primer, subject to the directions for the specific product. The Original Filler preparation procedure below calls for bare metal, so follow the label for the product and substrate you actually have.
Do not transfer repair limits from other products to Original Filler. 3M describes its short-strand fiberglass filler for holes up to 1/2 inch in diameter without a backing screen or patch; its long-strand reinforced filler page describes filling metal rust holes up to 1 inch in diameter and rebuilding missing pieces. Those are descriptions of distinct reinforced products, not limits or endorsements for Original Filler. Choose a product whose stated application matches the damage, and seek an appropriate repair for structural damage.

- ORIGINAL FORMULA for repairing dents, dings, holes, large rusted areas and scratches in vehicles
- TWO-PART lightweight compound mixes easily and spreads smoothly
- SPREAD EASY and cures in only 20 minutes for same day repairs
- FORMULATED TO BE NON-SHRINKING
- SUITABLE FOR wood, steel, aluminum, fiberglass, and concrete
Prepare the surface before mixing
- Wash the repair area with soap and water, then clean it with a low-VOC-compliant cleaner. Let the surface dry.
- Using 80-grit paper, remove paint, primer, and rust to expose bare metal. Sand 1–2 inches beyond the damaged area.
- Clean the area again and allow it to dry. Set out a clean, non-porous surface for mixing and the spreader before opening the hardener.
Mix a small batch and apply it promptly
Measure and mix
Stir the filler in its can and knead the hardener tube. For a 3-inch-diameter puddle of filler, 3M specifies a 3-inch strip of hardener. Mix on the non-porous surface until the color is uniform. 3M’s directions state, “When product is mixed, the working time is 3-4 minutes.” This short window is why it helps to prepare everything first and mix only what you can apply promptly. Never put mixed filler back into the can or add hardener directly to the can.
Press on a thin first coat
Press a thin initial layer onto the repair area, then apply additional layers as needed. Follow the container directions rather than building an unnecessarily large mound; shaping and feathering are part of the process. 3M recommends applying Original Filler at 45°F (7°C) or above for best results.

Allow it to cure, then shape and sand
3M specifies a 20-minute cure time for Original Filler, but treat that as product guidance rather than a guarantee that every repair will be ready to sand at exactly that time. Conditions and repair size can affect readiness; follow the label and wait until the filler is ready to shape.
- Rough-shape the repair with 80-grit paper.
- Finish sand with 180 grit and finer, then feather the edge of the repair into the surrounding surface.
- According to 3M’s directions, wait 45 minutes and apply 2–3 coats of primer over the repair. Follow the primer maker’s instructions as well.
Use spot putty only for small finishing flaws
After shaping and priming, use Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty for small imperfections. It is a finishing step, not a replacement for preparing, mixing, and applying the main filler correctly. Re-prime the spot-puttied area with 2–3 coats, and follow the paint maker’s recommendations for primer and final finishing.

- CAN BE USED ON metal, fiberglass and wood as well as sanded and primed or painted surfaces
- FEATURES 3-minute work time
- Fast drying sandable in 30 minutes
- Non-staining to help ensure a consistent paint finish
Work safely and keep materials compatible
3M’s directions call for adequate ventilation and appropriate eye, skin, respiratory, and hand protection, and direct users to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Check the current SDS and labels for the filler, hardener, cleaner, primer, and any solvent before choosing PPE or handling products. Manage sanding dust and keep the work area ventilated; do not assume one respirator or protection level fits every task.
3M lists acetone or lacquer thinner for tool cleanup. Handle either solvent according to its own label and safety directions. Do not assume every Bondo filler has the same moisture suitability: 3M says some products are waterproof, while others should be kept dry until final finishing and sealing. Check the directions for the exact product you are using.
