You can make a cardboard robotic arm move without motors or coding: connect pairs of syringes with water-filled tubing, then use the moving plunger to actuate cardboard joints. The featured Make: project by The Q uses this hydraulic approach, layered cardboard for stiffness, and improvised hinges and syringe holders. It provides a materials list and design ideas, but not a dimensioned plan or a verified lifting capacity, so treat the build below as a practical starting point and test your own arm with a light object.

How the cardboard hydraulic arm works

Each control syringe connects to an actuator syringe through flexible tubing. When you push the control plunger, water transfers the force to the other plunger. Mount that actuator across a joint and its movement can rotate one section of the arm relative to another. The cardboard provides the structure; the syringe-and-tubing pairs provide manual actuation.

The Q’s project, described by Gareth Branwyn in Make: on March 30, 2017, adapts a hydraulic arm concept by using cardboard instead of pine lumber. It describes layered cardboard, wooden and cardboard hinges, and improvised parts—including skewers, paper clips, zip ties, and a dead AA battery—as joint or syringe-holder components. The published description does not establish an exact number of independently controlled joints, so plan the mechanism around the movement you want rather than assuming a particular axis count.

Materials and tools

The Make: project lists these materials:

  • Cardboard
  • Eight 10 mL syringes with rubber pistons
  • Four lengths of clear plastic hosing
  • Water
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Super glue
  • A dead AA battery
  • An empty soda can

Its listed tools are a ruler, box knife, pencil, scissors, hot glue gun, and pliers or snips. The source does not specify tubing diameter: choose tubing that fits the syringes you obtain and forms a snug connection. These quantities describe the featured project’s materials list, not a guarantee that every design will use the same layout.

  • Hands-on Building: This is an in-depth STEM building project, not a pre-assembled toy. Follow the detailed step-by-step assembly instructions, take time to ensure proper assembly, and enjoy a true STEM experience. Expect multiple hours of build time.

Plan the arm before cutting

Decide what the arm needs to do before choosing its proportions. A simple demonstration might be picking up an empty cup or another light object. Sketch a base, arm sections, pivot locations, and a gripper; then check that each planned actuator has room to move without colliding with the frame.

For a classroom benchmark, the separate TryEngineering activity powered by IEEE specifies an arm at least 18 inches long and a goal of lifting a cup at least 6 inches from a surface. Those are challenge criteria for that activity, not measured results for The Q’s cardboard arm. The activity suggests about an hour for teams to design and build, but actual time depends on the design and group.

Build and test a first version

  1. Make a stiff frame. Cut cardboard sections for the base and arm links. Where a section flexes, layer or fold cardboard to add stiffness. Keep the pivot areas aligned and avoid making the arm heavier than necessary.
  2. Create pivots and actuator mounts. Use suitable fasteners or improvised hinges to let the sections rotate. Make secure holders for both syringes in each pair: one must stay fixed to one side of a joint, while the other pushes or pulls the other side as its plunger moves.
  3. Connect each syringe pair. Fit tubing between a control syringe and its corresponding actuator syringe, then fill the connected path with water. The Make: parts list includes four hose lengths and eight syringes; arrange the pairs to suit your design. Exact tubing size and a complete circuit layout are not specified in the article.
  4. Check each mechanism by hand. Before connecting or pressing the controls, move each joint gently through its intended travel. Look for binding, loose mounts, or cardboard that bends instead of allowing the pivot to move.
  5. Test hydraulic movement with no load. Press a control plunger slowly and observe its actuator and joint. If motion is erratic, check for trapped air, leaks, or loose tubing connections. Secure any connection that slips before trying again.
  6. Fit and test the gripper. Try the gripper on a light object first. Record what it can pick up and how high it can raise it; adjust the grip, pivot placement, or frame stiffness if needed. No published payload result is available for the featured arm, so your own test is the useful measure for your build.

Choose a mechanism that suits your project

The hydraulic design is not the only way to make a cardboard arm move. The choice depends on the kind of motion, materials, and learning goal you want.

Approach How it moves Useful for What to keep in mind
Hydraulic cardboard arm Water-filled syringe pairs transfer a hand movement through tubing. A manually controlled build focused on joints and force transfer. The Make: project provides no verified lift capacity, precision rating, or complete dimensioned template.
Everyday-material classroom arm TryEngineering’s activity uses cardboard and materials such as string or fishing line, clips, fasteners, and craft supplies. A team design challenge emphasizing sketches, trial and error, and a cup-lifting goal. Its 18-inch arm and 6-inch cup-lift targets are activity criteria, not test data for the hydraulic project.
Programmed pick-and-place arm TeachEngineering’s separate advanced activity uses coding software and an assembled SO-ARM101 arm. A lesson focused on coding and teleoperation rather than a simple cardboard mechanism. It requires a laptop, software, and the specified assembled arm; it is a different, more equipment-dependent project.

There is no head-to-head test establishing a universal winner. Compare the options by how many joints you want to move, the grip style, frame rigidity, construction effort, and the object you want to lift. A line-operated mechanism may suit a low-material classroom challenge; syringe hydraulics make fluid-based manual actuation visible; a programmed arm serves a coding lesson.

Safety while building

The featured project lists a box knife, scissors, hot glue gun, and pliers or snips. For children, have an adult supervise cutting and hot-glue work. Cut on a stable surface, keep fingers clear of blades and pinch points, and let glued parts cool before handling. These are practical precautions for the listed tools; the Make: article does not provide a complete safety checklist. The IEEE teacher-supervision note belongs to its classroom lesson and should not be mistaken for a special electrical requirement of this manual hydraulic build.
