For a simple snow sculpture, use snow that packs, choose a basic shape, and either build it up in sections or pack a block and carve it down. You can make a snow-person shape with your hands alone; a small container and a few simple tools help if you want a more compact carved design.
Choose a shape and a building method
Start with a subject you can reduce to a few broad forms—a snow person, animal, or simple geometric shape. A quick sketch or reference picture can help you keep the proportions manageable.

Check the snow before you start
Use snow that holds together when squeezed. Powdery snow is difficult to pack, while slushy snow is hard to shape cleanly. Great Wolf Lodge recommends slightly wet snow for a snowman, rather than powdery or slushy snow: Great Wolf Lodge’s snowman guide.

Temperature advice depends on the activity. In a GEICO article published March 19, 2026, Don Berg, an artist and head of the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition, says, “The sweet spot for snow sculpting is between 20ºF and 25ºF.” He describes snow in that range as supple, with warmer snow more prone to melting and colder snow potentially dry and brittle. That is attributed sculpting advice, not a universal requirement. Build a simple snow-person shape
- Make the base. Form a large snowball or mound and pack it firmly. Choose a shaded spot if possible; Great Wolf Lodge recommends shade because direct sunlight can melt a snowman more quickly.
- Add smaller sections. Make one or more smaller snowballs and set them on the base in descending size.
- Secure the joins. Press snow into the gaps where the sections meet, then smooth it so the pieces hold together.
- Add only the details you want. Sticks, stones, buttons, or ribbon can provide simple features without changing the basic form.
Pack and carve a small sculpture
- Use a simple reference. Sketch the shape or keep a picture nearby so you can check the proportions as you work.
- Pack a container. Fill a sturdy container such as a cooler or garbage can with snow, pressing it down until the block is firm.
- Remove the form carefully. Turn out or lift away the container without crumbling the packed snow.
- Shape the large forms first. Work gradually, taking off small amounts to establish the overall silhouette before adding finer details.
- Stop when the form is clear. A simple design is easier to shape and less likely to lose its outline as you refine it.
Use basic tools and optional decorations
Hands and packable snow are enough for a basic snow-person sculpture. For a carved shape or added detail, a hand-held garden trowel or craft sticks can help with shaping. The University of Arizona activity also suggests a plastic pump spray bottle filled with colored water for surface decoration. If children are taking part, the University of Arizona card lists hats, mittens, leggings, and boots as clothing for the activity. It also suggests taking a photograph so the finished sculpture can be remembered after it melts.
